Borussia Dortmund have banned the fans who displayed a homophobic banner at a recent home match from the stadium for three years.
The banner was displayed during Dortmund's 1-0 win over Werder Bremen on March 17.
A statement on the club's official website read: "After discussions with the Ultra group, which was responsible for the offensive and homophobic banner that was displayed on the South Tribune of Signal Iduna Park at the game against Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund have given the people who were responsible for the action the maximum penalty of a three-year stadium ban."
The club added the Ultra group had a "very intensive discussion" with Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke during which they apologised publicly for the incident.
Watzke said: "In this discussion we made it very clear that Borussia Dortmund stands for tolerance, openness and respectful behaviour towards everyone."

England: Match ban for fans in policing row - 11/04/2012
Source : The Press Association
Football fans have been banned from attending a match between League Two clubs Gillingham FC and Swindon Town amid a row over policing costs. A prohibition notice has been issued preventing supporters from attending Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium in Kent on April 21 following "serious concerns" about potential public order at the ground. Intelligence suggests that the risk is so serious that fans will not be able to attend the match unless a dispute between Kent Police and Gillingham over the costs and number of officers needed is resolved, said Medway Council. Councillor Mike O'Brien, whose responsibilities include community safety, said in a statement: "Due to a dispute between Gillingham FC and Kent Police about the costs and number of police officers needed at Priestfield Stadium for the match against Swindon Town on April 21, we have unfortunately been left with no alternative but to issue a prohibition notice on the game preventing supporters from attending. "We have done this following advice from Kent Police that they have specific intelligence concerning the match and its fans. "We are satisfied that the intelligence provided shows the police are clearly right to have serious concerns about public order at the ground and that the risk is so serious for fans that, until steps have been taken to reduce it to a reasonable level through agreeing adequate policing levels, spectators will be prohibited from attending the match. "We fully sympathise with all the fans that want to watch this match and we sincerely hope that Gillingham FC and the police can get together urgently to resolve this matter and enable the match to go ahead with supporters from both clubs able to watch an exciting football match in a safe environment." Kent Police said it was "not acceptable" to expect taxpayers to subsidise a commercial event. Gillingham FC must foot the bill to ensure the right number of police officers are inside the stadium, the force added. Chief Superintendent Alasdair Hope said: "The safety of all fans attending this football match is our main priority and we are not prepared for their safety to be compromised. The provision of an appropriate number of police officers inside the stadium is essential, and the cost of this must be met by Gillingham FC. "Commercial enterprises across the country pay for the policing of their events, including football matches, and no-one is exempt. Medway Council as the licensing authority has served a prohibition notice on Gillingham FC and discussions are ongoing between Kent Police and the club to address the safety issues."

Russia : Zenit given small fine for racist chanting - 11/04/2012
Source : http://www.euronews.com
Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg were fined a mere $3,400 on Wednesday for racist chanting by their fans during last week’s Premier League game at Lokomotiv Moscow.
St Petersburg fans made monkey noises at Lokomotiv’s black players during Saturday’s match, which Zenit won 1-0 to virtually seal their second consecutive Russian league title. They lead CSKA Moscow by 11 points with six games remaining.
Zenit’s fine was small compared to the $17,000 imposed on Spartak Moscow’s Nigeria international Emmanuel Emenike last month for an offensive gesture he made towards Dynamo Moscow fans who racially abused him during a match.
Emenike also received a suspended sentence until the end of the season. Spartak have appealed the striker’s fine.
The Zenit case was the latest in a series of racist incidents in Russian football.
In March, a banana was thrown at Anzhi Makhachkala’s Congolese defender Christopher Samba in a match at Lokomotiv Moscow. Another Anzhi player, Brazilian full back Roberto Carlos, had bananas thrown at him at stadiums in St Petersburg and Samara last year.

Hooliganism a worry for Euro 2012, says Platini - 13/04/2012
Source : http://au.news.yahoo.com
The threat of hooliganism remains a key concern ahead of Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, UEFA chief Michel Platini warned on Thursday.
"I foresee a great Euro. I always see a glass half full, not half empty. I see all the wonderful things linked to football, such as the great atmosphere there's going to be in Poland and Ukraine," Platini told reporters in the Polish capital Warsaw.
"I hope we won't need the police," he said, during a visit to the city's brand-new National Stadium, where the European championships kick off on June 8.
"But we all know that the world isn't as nice as I'd like it to be, so of course we need security, people to protect the stadiums, to look out for the hooligans who'll come, and that's why the Polish government has a security system in place," he added.
"If there's one thing that always worries me, it's security."
Poland's interior ministry on Thursday said that over 9,000 officers would be deployed specifically to ensure security, and not just in the four host cities.
Besides Warsaw, matches will also take place in the Baltic port of Gdansk, Poznan in the west and Wroclaw in the southwest.
Large numbers of fans are also expected to show up in the southern city of Krakow, where England, Holland and Italy will set up their training camps.
Polish police also plan to work with foreign law enforcement authorities' liaison officers who know who their own countries' troublemakers are.
To help keep the peace in the stadiums, meanwhile, Poland's PZPN football association has trained over 7,600 stewards.
Platini, who arrived in Poland earlier Thursday after a visiting Ukraine, underlined that UEFA and the host nations' authorities alike bear the responsibility for ensuring fans can watch matches safely.
"I said the exact same thing in Ukraine, to the Ukrainian president," he noted.
Poland has been cracking down on domestic hooliganism ahead of Euro 2012.
Long accused of failing to do enough to tackle a hardcore estimated by police at up to 5,000 in this nation of 38 million, Polish authorities were stung into action after last May's violence-marred Cup Final.
A ban on away fans was imposed for last season's remaining handful of matches from the first division downwards, and ad hoc sanctions have been put in place for several clubs this term.
The authorities have beefed up electronic tagging and stadium bans on individual hooligans.
But the broad-brush approach has faced criticism from ordinary fans who claim they are being targeted as a group as the authorities strive to prove their mettle.
Beyond hooliganism, other concerns remain.
In Ukraine, Platini lashed out at "bandits and crooks" amid a furore over sky-high accommodation costs fans face there.
Asked about the situation in Poland, Platini said: "I complained in Ukraine. In Poland it's about right."
Euro 2012 marks the quadrennial tournament's first edition behind the former Iron Curtain, with Poland and Ukraine dogged by doubters since pipping favorites Italy in the hosting race in April 2007.
They have faced vast infrastructure challenges, but with less than two months before the 16-nation championships kick off, Platini was sanguine.
"Things have been a bit more complicated in Ukraine than in Poland. But just like in Poland, they've done a fantastic job," he said.
"We organisers are always demanding, because we want things to go faster, but there are times when things get in the way, meaning it doesn't go as fast as you'd like. But we know that in 54 days everything will be ready, both in Ukraine and Poland," he added.
PZPN chief Grzegorz Lato - like Frenchman Platini a former international footballer - echoed that.
"Everything is under control," he said.

Leeds United v Manchester United: Jail for ‘ringleader’ in football violence - 15/04/2012
Source : http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk
A HOOLIGAN described as a “ringleader” in a major disturbance between police and Leeds United fans after a cup match against Manchester United at Elland Road has been jailed.
Dane Martin, 21, was arrested after his picture appeared on the front page of the Yorkshire Evening Post as part of a police appeal to catch thugs involved in the trouble following the Carling Cup clash between the arch rival clubs on September 20 last year.
Leeds Crown Court heard there were scenes of “total chaos” before the game. Away fans were pelted with bricks, coins and bottles and a policeman suffered a broken leg after being trampled by a horse as officers formed a cordon to separate the two sets of supporters.
During the game more trouble flared when Manchester United fans taunted Leeds supporters by wearing Turkish football shirts out of disrespect for the two Leeds United supporters, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight who were murdered in Istanbul in 2000.
Manchester fans were held back for an hour after the game but around 200 Leeds fans waited outside. Martin was one of the “ringleaders” caught on camera goading and taunting police as they struggled to keep the two groups apart.
Bricks and other missiles were also thrown from a footbridge. A police dog and its handler suffered injuries. The officer said it was the worst incident he had been involved in in 19 years.
At one point Martin was pictured brandishing a long piece of wood.
He was arrested in January this year after information was given to the police when he was pictured in a YEP appeal.
A copy of the newspaper along with the distinctive purple polo shirt he had been wearing on the night was found at his home.
Martin, of Garden Village, Micklefield, pleaded guilty to affray. He was out of prison on licence for burglary and assault at the time of the incident and was recalled to jail.
Michael Greenhalgh, for Martin, said his client had decided to become involved after seeing Manchester United fans change into Turkish shirts. He added: “When he came out of the ground he did not intend to cause injury to anybody. But it is the sort of public disorder that people are frightened of.”
Judge Scott Wolstenholme jailed Martin for 12 months and made him the subject of a football banning order. He is not allowed near Elland Road during home games and cannot go near Leeds railway station or rival grounds during away games.
