Turkey : Total 44 arrested in Bursaspor match probe - 02/06/2011

Source : TODAYSZAMAN.COM

14 more suspects were arrested late on Wednesday, accused of orchestrating incidents before a league game between Beşiktaş and Bursaspor on earlier last month.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) canceled the game and declared Beşiktaş the winner after pre-match violence broke out between supporters of the two teams, leaving 34 people injured.

Anatolia news agency reported on Wednesday that Bursa police had detained 27 suspects believed to be part of the incidents and released six suspects because they were minors. 16 suspects were then referred to a court, which arrested 14 of them.

Officials at the police department said interrogation of five suspects continue so that the number of arrests might increase.

30 people were arrested as part of the investigation earlier and by Wednesday’s arrests, total 44 suspects have been jailed so far.

The clashes erupted when police prevented Bursaspor fans from assaulting Beşiktaş supporters in an apparent revenge attack following last year's street fights in İstanbul.

Hundreds of Bursaspor supporters, wanting to prevent opposition fans from entering the venue, began to fight with police, pelting them with stones.

Paraguay arrests football hooligans

Police in Paraguay arrested 61 hooligans after a Copa Libertadores semi-final encounter and have accused them of theft, vandalism and public disorder offences, police said on Thursday.
The incidents occurred on the fringes of the 3-3 draw between Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno and Brazilian outfit Santos, who qualified for the final having won the first leg 1-0.
The hooligans are accused of public disorder and theft from shops in the suburb of San Lorenzo, just outside the capital Asuncion.
They were travelling in two buses to Brazil when police, acting on complaints from shop owners in San Lorenzo, intervened. The hooligans have been questioned and could be charged.

Birmingham City fans arrested in investigation into football violence - 03/06/2011

Source : Birminghammail.net

SIX Birmingham City fans have been arrested as part of an investigation into footballr violence after Blues were dumped out of the FA Cup in March.

Trouble flared about 30 minutes after the final whistle went on the team’s 3-2 defeat to Bolton in the quarter-final of the competition at St Andrews.

Police said rival fans clashed on the forecourt of the BP Service Station, in Watery Lane Middleway, a short distance away from the ground.

Officers from the Force Football Unit swooped to arrest the six on suspicion of affray. They were questioned and released on bail until next month pending further inquiries.

Huddersfield Town fans urged to shop Old Trafford thugs who shamed the day - 02/06/2011

Source : Huddersfield Daily Examiner

FOOTBALL fans were last night urged to “shop” the thugs who brought mayhem to a football showpiece.

A special police team has been set up to probe the appalling violence which marred Huddersfield Town’s play-off final with Peterborough United at Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground.

Two stewards were treated in hospital for injuries they received after being attacked by a group of thugs in the Huddersfield Town stands.

Other fans were also hurt before police and stewards restored order.

Now Greater Manchester Police has appealed to genuine football fans to name and shame those involved.

And both Huddersfield Town and the club’s Supporters Association have backed the appeal.

The ugly face of football was seen minutes before the end of the match in the top tier of Old Trafford’s West Stand.

Fans who were in that section told of abusive threats by a group of men before it erupted into violence.

One man who apparently challenged them was badly beaten and kicked, although it is understood he is not pressing charges.

Stewards who intervened were also attacked, as were police officers who arrived to break up the disturbance.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the violence to come forward.

They confirmed it was confined to a section of the ground being used by Huddersfield Town supporters after a man was seen being assaulted.

A spokesman said: “A number of stewards and police officers were also assaulted. Two stewards were treated at Trafford General Hospital for serious facial injuries and have since been discharged.

“Three men, aged 46, 21 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, assault and assault with intent to resist arrest and bailed until June 7, pending further inquiries.

“Another man, Jordan Paul Barnett, 29, of West Park Road, Batley, has been charged with violent disorder and two counts of Section 47 assault, causing actual bodily harm. He appeared at Trafford Magistrates Court and was remanded to a later date”.

Det Con Chris Aunins, of Trafford CID, said: “It appears a small minority of Huddersfield fans attacked other supporters towards the end of the match.

“Whether or not this was fuelled by frustration at the result I don’t know, but this was an incident of gratuitous violence that left a supporter and two stewards with very nasty injuries.

“I would appeal to anyone who was at the match who might have seen what happened to call the police.”

Robert Pepper, chairman of the Town Supporters Association, said: “We wholeheartedly back the police appeal.

“Whoever was responsible for this appalling violence needs catching, taking to court and banned from football. “Their actions have appalled every true supporter and tarnished the name of the club.

“I have spoken to one fan who was in that section with his family and his eight-year-old daughter has said she never wants to go to a football game again. That is not what we want”

A Town spokesman said: “As a football club we treat matters of violence or disorder very seriously.

“Greater Manchester Police are currently investigation the matter and as a club we have been assisting them fully with their enquiries in any way we can. We have been in close liaison since Sunday exchanging information.

“We very much hope that all those responsible can be brought to justice and are dealt appropriately by the courts.

Following any legal process, the club will then also look at all the options available to us - and this will include issuing life bans from our games. “We are a community club and will not tolerate any disorder or violent behaviour whatsoever, it has no place at Huddersfield Town.

“The club would urge anyone with relevant information to please contact us and we will pass it on to Greater Manchester Police”.

SHOCKED football fans have told of their horror of witnessing the violence at Old Trafford.

Several have contacted the Examiner to express outrage at the frightening scenes which marred Sunday’s play-off final.

One fan said: “There were about five men attacking one man. The victim went down on the ground because of a rain of punches. The attackers continued with more intensity, while the leader of the group continued to punch him, others kicked him and one repeatedly jumped on his head. It looked like they were trying to kill him.

“Then the group attacked the police with the same ferocity. The police struggled to get the situation under control and it turned into a fist fight between the police and the assailants.

“If the attackers were Town fans, I hope they never go to a Town match again and go to prison for a very long time”.

Another supporter said: “I experienced something that I never want to experience again. We no longer have memories of a special day, all we can think are the horrid sights we witnessed.

“A mass brawl erupted, with an innocent row of people in between them. At one point it looked like one of the fighters was about to be thrown over the edge of the tier on to unsuspecting Town fans below.

“It was a horrible sight as a poor innocent steward was getting his head kicked in and we were helpless to do anything. We saw the steward after and he was pouring with blood and had two gigantic black eyes, using a ‘Believe’ T-shirt to stop all the blood. That’s not what they were intended for”.

A third fan said: “They had been abusive all the game and then went mad.

“One man they picked on was hit and kicked many times and they turned on the police and the stewards”.

Football hooligan given suspended sentence - 03/06/2011

Source : Exmouth Journal

An Exmouth football hooligan has been given a suspended prison sentence after attacking rival fans.

Exeter Crown Court heard Darren Bolt, 24, of Salisbury Road, was part of a group of around 25 Exeter City hooligans who attacked three Huddersfield Town fans and one Plymouth Argyle fan in Exeter city centre on May 8 last year.

The Exeter fans had congregated outside the Ship Inn in Exeter’s High Street because they believed Huddersfield fans were drinking inside.

Finding that the Huddersfield fans had left the pub, the group moved away along the High Street, which was crowded with weekend shoppers.

The court was told the Exeter fans then came across what they believed was a group of four Huddersfield fans and launched a violent attack.

A swift police response saw the Exeter fans flee the scene, but the incident had been caught on CCTV cameras, which enabled the police to identify Bolt and six other hooligans, who were charged with offences.

Bolt, who could be seen on the CCTV footage throwing punches at the rival fans, pleaded guilty to affray.

He was sentenced this week to 10 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and was also ordered to complete 220 hours of community service. He was also banned from attending football matches for six years.

The judge said that Bolt had only escaped an immediate jail term because of his early guilty plea and previous good character.

Thirty hurt in clashes between Belgian, Turkish fans

Thirty people including three police officers suffered light injuries after fans clashed while watching the Belgium and Turkey Euro 2012 qualifier on a big screen, city officials in Ghent announced on Saturday.
One police officer was struck in the head with a bottle thrown from the crowd, while around 30 other people were reported to have been treated for light injuries at hospitals around the city.
The clashes occurred during and after the transmission of the game on a big screen in the centre of Ghent, where up to 7,000 Belgian and Turkish supporters had gathered.
Some fans clashed after the end of the match, which finished in a 1-1 draw, with police reporting sporadic acts of vandalism.
City officials said only one arrest was made.

England : Ban and prison for football hooligan who threw flare at policeman - 04/06/2011

Source : Thisisplymouth.co.uk

FOOTBALL hooligan Rhys Stockwood threw a lit flare at police trying to protect Exeter City fans, a court heard.

Jailing him at Plymouth Crown Court, Judge Francis Gilbert QC said: "The police are entitled to look to the courts to send a strong message and to protect them in the future."

Prosecutor Piers Norsworthy described how on November 9 last year, Plymouth Argyle played Exeter City at home in an evening match.

Some home fans were trying to get at City fans, and police were pelted with coins and beer bottles and a flare was thrown on to the pitch.

After the match, City fans and their coaches were attacked.

Police constables Baker and Sobey were among officers in the vicinity of the Esso station in Outland Road, trying to keep order. Police had batons drawn and police dogs and their handlers were on the scene.

They were confronted by about 60 fans chanting football songs and throwing coins and bottles.

Mr Norsworthy said that suddenly Pc Baker shouted a warning that a lit flare was flying through the air towards them, and Pc Sobey ran to the left.

Afterwards he said: "If not for my colleague, it would have gone off directly in my face."

As it was, it landed 10 metres away and exploded, part of it hitting Pc Sobey in the side.

Police spoke to Stockwood and took his details.

He told them: "I know it was stupid. I admit it. Can I have my stuff back? I haven't got any more flares."

Stockwood also had been seen before the match in a pub, singing: "We hate Exeter!" and being aggressive towards City supporters.

Mr Norsworthy said Stockwood was later interviewed, providing a prepared statement and then answering all questions "no comment".

But the statement was a lie, saying he had lit the flare but not thrown it.

Messages were found on his phone saying he had flares and arranging to meet others before the match.

Nick Lewin, for Stockwood, said his client had felt remorse, texting a friend that night: "I need to grow up big time."

Mr Lewin said that although this was "thuggish behaviour", the incident was "an isolated aberration of character".

His client, now 22, was hard-working, well-liked and respected, and jail for him would be "catastrophic", he said.

Judge Gilbert noted that Stockwood, who eventually admitted affray, had a previous caution for racially-aggravated harassment.

He told him: "You lit and threw a flare at police officers. There must be immediate custody."

He jailed Stockwood, of Orchard Road, Beacon Park, for eight months and imposed a six-year football banning order.

Argentine match suspended after policeman shot‎

Argentine club Newell's Old Boys' home game with San Lorenzo was suspended after a police officer was shot and wounded by hooligans in the city of Rosario on Saturday, local media reported.

Two "barra brava" hooligans riding a motorbike took 10 to 12 shots at a rival faction of Newell's fans and officer Maximo Alegre was hit in the buttocks, the local newspaper La Capital (www.lacapital.com.ar) said. His life was not in danger.

Police chief Cristian Sola of Rosario, 300 km north of Buenos Aires, and the Security Secretary for Santa Fe province, Horacio Ghirardi, announced the decision to suspend the match at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium.

Newells – San Lorenzo suspended due to a fight between hooligans

In Rosario, a group of hooligans of Newells gathered to head to the stadium, when two strangers came with motorcycle, shot and wounded the head of the Police Section 11 of Rosario. The match was suspended because the police after the incident refused to work.

This resulted in a fight against hooligans that ended up affecting the police responsible for security.

Two strangers came on a motorcycle and threw a flurry of shots (would have been more than ten), one of which hit a policeman who was there to escort the hooligans to the stadium in a safe way.

Máximo Alegre, head of the Police Section 11 of Rosario, was wounded by a bullet in the buttocks and was referred to the Emergency Hospital “Clemente Alvarez”.

Before the AFA announced the suspension of the meeting, police turned back and refused to work as security, because in these conditions it is impossible to develop a game that already seemed uncontrollable from the start.

Cameroon - Senegal - 04/06/2011

Angry Cameroon fans riot after draw with Senegal

Cameroon security forces used water cannons late on Saturday to disperse rioting soccer fans angered by Cameroon's draw with Senegal that dimmed the team's chances of qualifying for the 2012 African Nations Cup.

Cameroon captain Samuel Eto'o missed an 87th-minute penalty that would have closed the gap on group leaders Senegal, sparking off violence around the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium and leading Eto'o to apologise publicly.

Witnesses said several people were injured in the fracas, and that angry football fans smashed car windscreens and tore T-shirts bearing Eto'o's name off the backs of people wearing them. Security officials were not available to comment.

Late on Saturday, in a brief interview with state television, the Inter Milan striker asked fans to forgive him.

"When I score goals often, you hoist me to the top, but today I missed the penalty which would have given us victory and I take full responsibility for this underperformance," he said. "I know that the Cameroonian public wants us to win to make them happy. But I missed the penalty and I ask forgiveness."

Saturday's draw raised the possibility that the four-time African champions could fail to qualify for the 2012 African Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon after eight successive appearances in the finals.

Cameroon have five points from four qualifying matches, leaving them five points behind group E leaders Senegal.

Rioting also broke out in a suburb of Senegal's capital Dakar on Saturday after a power outage switched off televisions and radios in mid-game. Police used tear gas to break up crowds of rock-throwing fans.

Australian police slam Serb football fanse

Police on Wednesday lashed out at Serbian football fans who lit flares, smashed bottles and unfurled banners backing accused war criminal Ratko Mladic during their 0-0 draw with Australia.
Inspector Mick Beattie said four people were arrested at the game in Melbourne on Tuesday evening, while seven others were evicted from the stadium for bad behaviour and drunkenness.
"These idiots just thought they could activate flares in this crowd... that it was part of their viewing culture," Beattie told reporters, adding that he was disappointed they got past security.
"These are very, very hot marine flares, and it's just a miracle that no one was burnt or injured last night."
Beattie said a laser beam was also spotted in use, while seating was damaged.
Those arrested were each fined Aus$380 (US$405) for lighting flares and Football Federation Australia banned them from all future international and domestic football games in the country.
Victoria Police said more serious penalties were needed.
"We believe there is a pressing need to significantly upgrade the penalties," Beattie said.
Outrage was also sparked by a banner being unfurled calling for the release of Mladic, who was arrested last month and indicted for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
Another read "Death to Tadic, Freedom to Mladic", the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported. Boris Tadic is the Serbian president, whose government arrested Mladic and sent him to The Hague.
Bosnia's ambassador to Australia, Damir Arnaut, told the newspaper he was appalled by the signs.
"This is a despicable act that speaks volumes about the mentality of those who participated in it," he said.
"By unfurling this banner, let alone taking the time to create such an elaborate design, they unequivocally expressed support for the slaughter of over 8,000 civilians."
Melbourne is home to a large ethnic-Serb community.
Violent clashes rocked the city's Australian Open tennis tournament in 2009, with Serb and Bosnian fans hurling chairs and other objects at one another following Serbian Novak Djokovic's win over Bosnian-born American Amer Delic.

Police accused of tasering Zenit St Petersburg's Danko Lazovic

Zenit St Petersburg accused riot police of zapping their striker Danko Lazovic with an electric baton as he tried to throw his shirt into the stands during a Russian league match on Sunday.

Television footage shows the shirtless Serbian being approached by police officers as he moved towards the away fans after the match on Saturday at Volga Nizhny Novgorod.

Zenit, the defending champions, said Lazovic was given an electric shock that left a burn mark under his right shoulder blade. Police deny the accusation.

"I simply went to give my shirt to the fans after the game when a policeman appeared behind me and hit me in the back with an electric shock," Lazovic was quoted by Sport Express newspaper as saying. "I don't know why this happened. Maybe he thought I was one of the fans."

Switzerland: Football hooligans may be kicked off trains - 21/06/2011

Source : Swissinfo.ch

Swiss authorities are examining radical proposals to deal with train-wrecking hooligans, such as dumping them in the middle of nowhere in the event of trouble.
Every season rampaging fans cause about SFr3 million ($3.5 million) worth of damage to trains. The destruction caused after May’s Swiss Cup final alone went into five figures.

“Things can’t go on as they are,” Peter Füglistaler, head of the Federal Transport Office, told the Sunday newspapers NZZ am Sonntag and Le Matin Dimanche. “It’s time to act before a serious accident occurs.”

The Transport Office and Federal Railways are holding a high-level meeting before the end of the month to discuss possible measures, which include alcohol tests and a ban on alcohol and glass bottles, as well as the possibility of throwing troublesome travellers off the train between stations.

“The police can stop a small bus full of rampaging supporters from continuing on their way. So why should it be different for public transport?” asked the transport office chief.

Füglistaler also questioned the current legislation whereby anyone purchasing a train ticket in Switzerland had the right to take a train. He said they were checking what the railway authorities were legally allowed to do. If necessary, changes to the law would be proposed.

The authorities are reportedly keen to introduce a combined match-train ticket which would force the away fans to use special trains organised and paid for by their football club to make them more responsible for supporters’ safety and security.

At present fans are separated from the ordinary travelling public by buying reduced tickets for special trains, and any damage is paid for by the Federal Railways.

“Under the current system there are always away club stewards and police present on trains, but it’s not enough to prevent trouble,” Federal Railways spokesman Frédéric Revaz told swissinfo.ch.

Political interest
Swiss politicians are also closely monitoring developments.

Christoph von Rotz, a rightwing Swiss People’s Party parliamentarian from canton Obwalden, said, “Like a private coach firm, the public transport operators should be able to refuse people certain services.”

Social Democratic Party President Christian Levrat said he has twice travelled on trains full of football fans from German-speaking Switzerland.

“I would never have dared get on with children,” he commented. “And I quickly realised that it wasn’t worth discussing or trying to calm people down. I understand the Federal Railways’ position.”

“But I’m not certain the Federal Railways should be allowed to choose what they do and who they transport.”

Karin Keller-Sutter, president of the Conference of Cantonal Justice and Police Directors, told the 20 Minuten online news site she was frustrated with the pace of change.

“I’m disappointed as the authorities have invested a great deal but I’m not sure how motivated the Swiss Football League (SFL) is. Their engagement has to be greater, for example, on the question of combined match-train tickets,” she said.

Play it down
The SFL, meanwhile, plays down football-related problems on trains, while playing up its cooperation on the issue.

“The situation is by far not as bad as described by some politicians in the country. Nevertheless we are very aware that we need to find more efficient ways to deal with vandalism and violence,” SFL spokesman Roger Müller told swissinfo.ch.

“We are discussing different options and measures with the Federal Railways. As we have limited competences outside the stadiums ourselves, there is no moving forward without cooperation with all organisations involved.”

Yet damage to trains continues to mount up each year with seats slashed, carriages and toilets wrecked, and bottles and seats thrown onto the track – thus endangering traffic.

After the last Swiss Cup final between FC Sion and FC Xamax Neuchâtel on May 29 in Bern, a passenger waiting for a train in Lausanne was injured by a bottle thrown out of a special train, and the platforms in Neuchâtel and Biel even had to be cleared as a fan train went through.

Not real fans
Domenicangelo Massimo, director of FC Sion, remains opposed to measures like combined match-train tickets, however.

“When the Federal Railways propose a combined ticket for a U2 concert, they don’t ask U2 to pay,” he told Le Matin Dimanche.

Massimo also made light of recent problems, saying most FC Sion fans had travelled to the Swiss capital by coach.

“For the final 258 buses left from canton Valais and there were no problems.”

The problems do not lie with groups of fans but rather with the occasional supporters who let off steam during big games, explained Sion Ultras [fans] President Chris, who added that real fans were actually taking the issue seriously.

“We are currently thinking about creating an organisation to manage fan movements by train. In this way we can ensure a better management with people specially appointed who are well known to oversee each compartment.”
