Old Firm fans are praised after ‘showpiece’ match
TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES EXPLAINED TO PLAYERS AFTER SCOTTISH CUP MAYHEM
Old Firm fans and players were praised yesterday after what Scotland’s justice minister described as a showpiece League Cup final.
Rangers edged out rivals Celtic to win 2-1 in extra time in the Co-operative Insurance Cup final at Hampden in Glasgow.
Both teams had been briefed on their responsibilities by police ahead of the game after an ill-tempered clash between the two teams earlier this month.
The match passed without incident, however, and Strathclyde Police said six supporters had been arrested in and around the stadium, four for breach of the peace and two relating to sectarian behaviour.
This compares with 34 arrests the last time the two teams met.
Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, who represented the Scottish Government at the match, said: “This was the showpiece final everyone wanted to see, and it was a great advert for Scottish football. Both teams were passionate, committed and it was end-to-end stuff from kick-off to the final whistle.
“The players, management and fans contributed to a memorable occasion, and I urge that their positive example inside the ground is replicated outside it over the course of the evening and beyond.”
Strathclyde Police Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Corrigan said: “I think that the atmosphere at the ground was excellent and the match was a great advert for our football.
“I hope that this atmosphere is replicated across the force and that we see a drop in the levels of alcohol-related violence that blight so many communities.”
Old Firm talks chaired by the first minister were held earlier this month in the wake of the fiery game at Celtic Park and an action plan was agreed.
The moves came after the high-profile disorder during the Scottish Cup game, in which three red cards were handed out and culminated in a confrontation between Celtic manager Neil Lennon and Rangers assistant coach Ally McCoist.
There was also disruption off the pitch, with more than 30 supporters arrested.
Church leaders called for change in football.
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Rev John Christie, and Cardinal Keith O’Brien urged those involved in football to “not disgrace the good name of Scotland”.

Argentina : Three Policemen Suspended After Death Of San Lorenzo Fan - 21/03/2011
Three policemen have reportedly been suspended after the death of San Lorenzo fan Ramon Aramayo at the weekend.
The 36-year-old died before el Ciclon's match against Velez Sarsfield on Sunday, and his widow is certain that the authorities were the cause of her husband's death. Now, Spanish news agency EFE report that three policemen have been suspended pending further inquiries.
Furthermore, Argentine Cabinet Chief Anibal Fernandez has demanded that matches between San Lorenzo and Velez Sarsfield, which have a history of violence between the two sets of fans, should "never again" be played in front of the supporters but instead should be played "on neutral venues" and behind closed doors.
"They have demonstrated that they have an enormous inclination to stop things from going well," Fernandez continued, before addressing the investigation into the responsibility of the authorities in Aramayo's death.
"I want the Minister [of Security] to be able to work thoroughly and without constrictions in order to be able to know exactly what happened. If the police are accountable, there will be investigations and sanctions for those responsible."

Police request from football clubs to take UEFA request seriously - 22/03/2011
Source : Blic
Serbian police requested from all football clubs to distance themselves from fans making problems in stadiums. Precisely, the police requested from them to cut financing of all activities by their fans and prevent them from entering clubs’ premises and stadiums. The leaders of fan groups are left the possibility to isolate those causing violence. By this the state bodies made the first move in order to prevent expel of Serbian football clubs and the national team from European competition what was recently threatened by the first man of the UEFA Michelle Platini during visit to Belgrade.
Platini has given the Serbian and Croatian football association one year deadline to do something about security issue or to be faced with possible expel from international competition. In spite of that so many torches were lit at recent match between the ‘Red Star’ and ‘Partizan’. Obviously, the threat by Platini has not been taken seriously.
‘Football clubs have to distance them from hooligans most urgently. That has to be done radically and completely. Also football stadiums must not be used for sale of drug. Every fan leader knows exactly who has come to the stadium to cause violence’, ‘Blic’ source from Serbian Home Ministry says.

Autopsy shows San Lorenzo fan died due to heart and lung edema, not beating - 21/03/2011
Source : Buenos Aires Herald
The results of the autopsy performed on the corpse a San Lorenzo football club fan that died before Vélez-San Lorenzo match, showed that Ramón Aramayo died due to a lung and heart edema and haemorrhage and not as a result of a beating.
Aramayo died shortly before the beginning of the Vélez-San Lorenzo match for the sixth round of the Clausura Tournament. The victims’s wife, Mabel Aramayo, insisted that her husband was handcuffed and beaten by the police, within a violent clash between hooligans and police officers.
The match lasted only seven minutes and was suspended due to violent incidents. Both the Vélez and San Lorenzo governing committees regretted the incident in statements. San Lorenzo expressed their “deepest regret” to the relatives of Aramayo and offered to grant them the necessary “personal and judicial support.”
The officials expressed their confidence in the work of the judiciary and insisted the Vélez Sársfield leadership “tried to impede any kind of violence,” although they admitted San Lorenzo fans were attacked when they arrived at the stadium. However, the statement claimed that the incident had no relation with the death of Aramayo.

Aston Villa fans jailed for attack on Man Utd fans - 22/03/2011
Source : http://www.birminghammail.net
THREE Aston Villa fans – a father and two sons – have been jailed over an attack on a family of Manchester United supporters.
British Transport Police said Ricci Butler, aged 32, of Ericsson Close, Daventry, and his brother Greg Butler, 29, of Golding Close, Daventry, each received 12-month prison sentences last Tuesday after admitting a charge of affray.
Their father, Lawrence Butler, 56, also of Golding Close, received a 21-month custodial sentence after admitting the same charge. The trio were also given five-year football banning orders.
The attack took place at the town’s railway station on Sunday February 28 last year, following the Carling Cup Final between Manchester United and Aston Villa at Wembley.
Northampton Crown Court was told a 50-year-old man was knocked to the floor, his wife punched in the face and their son attacked as they left the station.
Det Con Sarah Trotter, said: “This was a very violent attack on a family who had gone out to enjoy the Carling Cup Final and had the misfortune to run into this group.
“The level of violence used was appalling, leaving one of the victims with long-term injuries.”
n In a separate incident, a man has been charged with tossing a burning flare towards a crowd of Birmingham City fans during trouble that marred the Carling Cup clash between Blues and rivals Aston Villa.
West Midlands Police said the unemployed 43-year-old from Sheldon was due before magistrates in the city next week accused of violent disorder.
He was arrested days after a photograph appeared in the Birmingham Mail of the violence which erupted at the final whistle of the crunch match.
Hundreds of Blues supporters charged the length of the pitch to taunt 3,800 Villa fans after their side’s 2-1 win last December.
In response, some Villa fans tore up seats and threw them towards their rival supporters. The flare, which police believe was initially thrown from the visiting supporters’ section, was tossed between the two sets of fans.
A police taskforce was set up to identify troublemakers. A number of people were later arrested over the scenes of violence.

Police wary of violent fans at Italy tie - 23/03/2011
Source : http://supersport.com
Police have started anti-violence controls at the Italian-Slovenian border ahead of a Euro 2012 qualifier in Ljubljana on Friday.
The ANSA news agency reported Wednesday that traffic is expected to slow down as officers from both countries verify the identity of Italian fans travelling to the Slovenian capital.
Clashes on the stands marred a friendly that the teams played in August 2002 in Triest.
Last November, groups of Italian fans disturbed a friendly played in Austria against Romania with racist chants against Mario Balotelli and Cristian Ledesma.
Balotelli is an Italy-born striker with Ghana origins, currently playing with English side Manchester City. Lazio midfielder Ledesma was born in Argentina and holds an Italian passport.
None of them was called up for Friday's game at the Stozice Stadium.

Fifty injured in CAN ticket frenzy - 24/03/2011
Source : RFI + Le Buteur website
Up to 50 people, including five police officers, were injured in jostling in the Algerian town of Annaba as football fans rushed to buy tickets for the CAN 2012 qualifier match between Morocco and Algeria.
Two people were knifed and left seriously wounded on Wednesday, Algerian daily El Watan reports.
Football fans supporting Algeria's Desert Foxes started queuing up to buy tickets more than one hour before the ticket office opened at the 19-May football stadium. As the crowds grew and skirmishes broke out, the police intervened with water canon to break up the queues.
The 19-May stadium is the only selling point for the 45,000 tickets earmarked for Algerian fans. 3,000 Moroccan fans are also expected to attend the match, scheduled to take place on Sunday.
Algeria holds the last place in Group D with one point as Morocco leads with the Central African Republic with four points.

AEK condemns attack on Scocco's residence - 25/03/2011
Source : AFP
Greek Super League club AEK condemned Thursday a minor explosion which occurred outside the home of its Argentine star winger Nacho Scocco. "AEK strongly condemns the attack with three gas canisters outside the home of our player Nacho Scocco. It is clear that such criminal acts and threats only cause harm to our team. Nobody has the right to violate the privacy and tranquility of any family, especially a football player. If the perpetrators of this incident are revealed and brought to justice, they will be eliminated forever from the AEK family," a statement from the club said. The small explosion from the gas canisters caused minor damage outside the two-story home of Scocco early Thursday morning. At the time of the blast, Scocco, his Argentinian model wife Melissa Pochettino and their newly-born daughter Eva were inside but were not injured. Greek press reports have identified as possible perpetrators angry AEK fans upset after last weekend's 6-0 thrashing at the hands of arch-rivals Olympiakos which led to the latter winning their 38th championship. AEK are currently in third place in the table, 14 points behind second-placed Panathinaikos, but have reached the Greek Cup final where they will face Atromitos next month. Scocco, 25, came to AEK from Mexico's Pumas in 2008 and last November renewed his contract with the club for another three years earning around a million euros annually.

But a planned taxi drivers' strike has been cancelled.
Police said they are looking forward to welcoming fans but have warned against bad behaviour. An alcohol ban will be in force on trains.

"Throughout the day, we'll have officers patrolling stations and on board trains between London and Cardiff. They will not tolerate intimidating or anti-social behaviour from those intent on spoiling the day for others."
Arriva Trains Wales will be providing additional trains on match day but long queues are expected and fans are advised to allow extra time for boarding.

Wales supporters will sit in the south of the Millennium Stadium and should use parking sites accessed from J33 of the M4.
Cardiff Hackney Carriage Association said a planned strike in the city had been called off after an agreement with Cardiff Council on fares and taxi rank provision.

Visiting Poland fans clashed with Lithuanian security forces as the home side beat the Euro 2012 co-hosts 2-0 in a friendly. Around 200 travelling Poles on Friday hurled fireworks, stones and bottles at police in the streets around Kaunas's stadium, ahead of and during the match between the two neighbours, the Lithuanian news agency Delfi reported. Riot police responded with tear gas and used dogs to ward off the fans, many of whom had been drinking heavily. A dozen fans were arrested, and one security officer was reportedly taken to hospital with stab wounds. Earlier, police had discovered masks, baseball bats and other potential weapons during spot checks on Polish-registered cars travelling to Kaunas.

Zenit investigating Carlos racism claim
Zenit St Petersburg have launched an investigation into an alleged incident of racist abuse involving former Brazil international Roberto Carlos.
Carlos, 37, now plies his trade for Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala and was apparently taunted by Zenit fans prior to his side's 2-0 defeat to the reigning Premier Liga champions on Monday.
A photograph has since emerged of a supporter appearing to wave a banana in the direction of the former Real Madrid star as the two teams entered the field.
Zenit have condemned the alleged incident, and vowed to step up their efforts to stamp out racism by working closely with the country's governing body and the police.
"In connection to the publication of a photograph on which a person in the stands made an unethical gesture toward FC Anzhi captain Roberto Carlos, FC Zenit is conducting an investigation of the given episode together with law enforcement officials,'' read a statement on Zenit's official website.
"Once again, FC Zenit reminds all football fans that racial intolerance is unacceptable. Football unites all people no matter what their social status, skin colour, or confession.
"We have always made every effort possible to prevent racism, however ethnic intolerance and aggression in the stands can be overcome only through joint efforts by law enforcement officials, the Russian Football Union, and clubs.''

Leicester City fan jailed for railway station clash ahead of Derby match - 26/03/2011
Source : Thisisleicestershire.co.uk
A Leicester City fan involved in trouble at a railway station ahead of a match at Derby has been jailed.
Joseph Wignall (19) swore and made lewd gestures at opposition fans at Derby railway station, British Transport Police said.
Officers warned him of his actions but he continued with his tirade of abuse and then attempted to break through police lines, which had been put in place to separate groups of fans, including 150 City supporters.
When police approached Wignall, he aggressively pushed an officer and was subsequently arrested by British Transport Police.
Wignall, of Lutterworth Road, Aylestone, Leicester, has now been sentenced to 17 weeks in a young offenders' institute by Derby magistrates.
He was also served with a three-year football banning order, which will commence on his release from prison.
The court heard that Wignall was in breach of a suspended sentence, following a conviction for wounding in January 2010 and a Community Punishment Order following a conviction for assaulting a police officer in July, 2010.
Wignall was also arrested in January this year following City's FA Cup tie against Manchester City. He was given a fixed penalty notice.
BTP football intelligence officer Pc Wayne Mitchell said: "Wignall continued to be disorderly despite a police warning and eventually crossed the line.
"His catalogue of previous convictions do not seem to have deterred him from offending so we hope that a custodial sentence and football banning order will make him think twice about getting involved in such thuggish behaviour in the future."
He added: "Disorderly behaviour by football fans in public, whether inside or outside the ground, or on public transport while travelling to and from a game, is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated by police.
"Those who think they can behave in such a way and ruin days out for law-abiding supporters and members of the public in the process, should know that we will seek banning orders. Such behaviour is not welcome on the railways or at football matches.
"The majority of football supporters are well-behaved genuine fans who enjoy supporting their team in good spirits.
"It is only the behaviour of a small minority such as Wignall, so-called football fans, who are intent on causing trouble."
A spokesman for Leicester City said: "Leicester City Football Club remains committed to the maintenance of a safe environment and a family atmosphere among supporters, both here at the Walkers Stadium and at away fixtures.
"We will continue to work with British Transport Police and Leicestershire police to ensure that commitment is maintained."

FOOTBALL thugs fought each other with poles from market stalls as innocent members of the public ran for cover, Nottingham Crown Court was told.
The violence between Leeds United and Sheffield United fans erupted in Retford's Market Place on Saturday, February 20 last year.
Among those arrested and charged by police with affray were Leeds supporters Roy and Adam Bennett, David Evans and Carl Walsh and Sheffield United fan Stuart Theaker.
Judge Jonathan Teare said: "This was a disgraceful act of violence in a public place."
All five defendants had previously pleaded guilty to affray before Monday's sentencing hearing.
Roy Bennett, 45, of Devonshire Road, Retford, who had also admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months, and ordered to do 240 hours of community service.
Adam Bennett, 29, of Whitaker Close, Retford; Theaker, 31, of Devonshire Drive, Sheffield; and Walsh, of Trinity Road, Retford, were given nine-month sentences suspended for 18 months and ordered to do 150 hours community service.

Booze ban on trains for match day
BOOZE is banned on all trains heading into and out of Cardiff Central train station today Ahead of Wales’ clash with England at the Millennium Stadium.
Football fans have also been warned bad behaviour will not be tolerated. British Transport Police (BTP) said it would mount patrols on train services between London and Cardiff.
Inspector Stuart Middlemas said: “Saturday promises to be a great day for Welsh and English fans and our officers will be helping everyone to enjoy it, as well as ensuring everyone travels to and from the game safely.
“Throughout the day, we’ll have officers patrolling stations and on board trains between London and Cardiff. They will not tolerate intimidating or anti-social behaviour.
“We’re asking fans to show some consideration for others on board the train and to moderate their language and behaviour – but above all, we want them to enjoy the day. We appreciate the vast majority are always well behaved – but we are warning anyone who steps out of line will be dealt with by our officers.”

Suspected hooligans held before Wales v England clash
Police held about 150 suspected hooligans at Cardiff bus station for fear of "disorder" before today's Wales v England football match at the Millennium Stadium.
The group were held in the Central Square area between Cardiff train station and the stadium before being moved on at around 4pm after some arrests were made.
Chief Supt Alun Thomas said: "We have to prevent those who are intent on disorder from committing it."
South Wales Police said a total of 10 arrests were made on the day, seven for ticket touting, two for public order offences and one for assault.
A police statement said: "At around 2.30pm around 150 fans were contained in Central Square, Cardiff, as a result of disorderly behaviour en route from licensed premises to the Millennium Stadium.
“This containment was necessary to prevent further disorder and maximise public safety. The group then left the city at our request.
“70,000 well-behaved football supporters did not deserve to have their day ruined, or their personal safety compromised, by this small minority and the containment ensured this did not happen.
“This incident should not distract from what was a hugely successful day for Cardiff with the overwhelming majority of people enjoying themselves and behaving responsibly.”
Police made 10 arrests, mostly for ticket touting offences, at the Euro 2012 qualifier between Wales and England in Cardiff.
The arrests included two for public order offences and one for assault.
Meanwhile, 150 fans were held near the city's bus station until an hour after kick off because police feared an incident of "disorder".
Chief Sup Alun Thomas said the "overwhelming" majority of supporters behaved responsibly.
He said that around 1430 GMT, around 150 fans were contained as a result of disorderly behaviour between pubs and and the stadium.
"This containment was necessary to prevent further disorder and maximise public safety. The group then left the city at our request," he said.
"Seventy thousand well-behaved football supporters did not deserve to have their day ruined, or their personal safety compromised, by this small minority and the containment ensured this did not happen.
"This incident should not distract from what was a hugely successful day for Cardiff with the overwhelming majority of people enjoying themselves and behaving responsibly."
Police arrested seven men on suspicion of ticket touting ahead of England's football match against Wales today.
The suspects were arrested outside the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
Most of those arrested were part of a pre-planned anti-ticket tout operation as part of the Metropolitan Police's Operation Podium.
It aims to tackle touting ahead of the London Olympics next year.
Det Chief Insp Nick Downing said: "Our experience shows those who are involved in illegal ticket touting now are highly likely to be the same people who want to target the Games in 2012."
"That's why we're working now to disrupt these criminals and organised networks, who are only interested in making money off the back of genuine fans."
Two men, aged 49 and 46, were charged with illegal touting, three men, aged 37, 40 and 48, remain in police custody, and two others, aged 34 and 51, were bailed until next month pending further inquiries.
Meanwhile, England manager Fabio Capello has called on football's authorities to track down fans who are shining lasers in the eyes of players.
Capello noticed it as he was replacing Scott Parker with Phil Jagielka just before the end of England's 2-0 win and he feels something has to be done.
Another incident involved midfielder Jack Wilshere.
"It is not good. You need to find these people who are coming to the game with a laser. It is not sporting," said Capello.
The FAW said it was in dialogue with the FA.
Both the Millennium Stadium and FA have confirmed that no official complaint has been made.
Ahead of Saturday afternoon's game, British Transport Police had warned against bad behaviour from fans travelling to the game, saying they would "not tolerate intimidating or anti-social behaviour from those intent on spoiling the day for others."
An alcohol ban was force on trains bringing fans to the city, including all services from London Paddington, Bristol Temple Meads, Swansea and Carmarthen, and all Valley Lines services.
A large number of roads were closed in the city centre but taxi drivers called off a planned strike.
