Queens Park Rangers - Crystal Palace - 12/03/2011

Source : www.soccerex.com

FA to probe bottle-throwing incident at Queens Park Rangers

Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace could face Football Association charges after bottles were thrown at home goalkeeper Paddy Kenny during Saturday's game at Loftus Road.

The ugly scenes were sparked when Kenny celebrated his side's second goal in a 2-1 victory in front of the away fans and the FA were due to consider a referee's report today.

Former Palace captain Shaun Derry tried to calm the travelling contingent down but this only made matters worse.

Palace boss Dougie Freedman said: "I don't condone it but fans get emotional. I don't want to see any bottles getting thrown on the pitch but there is nothing wrong with a bit of passion now and again."

Hyde FC - AFC Telford United - 14/03/2011

Source : www.shropshirestar.com

Brick smashes Telford fans’ bus window

AFC Telford United fans got home later than expected from their trip to Hyde – after a brick was thrown through the window of their bus while they were watching the game.

The return journey was delayed by more than half an hour as fans waited for police, who did not turn up.

Rob Palin, who organises away day travel for the club, said hundreds of pounds of damage was caused when yobs targeted the supporters’ coach during the Bucks’ 3-0 win at Hyde FC last night.

Mr Palin said: “It didn’t mar the game, which was great, but it did spoil the journey home and it was more subdued than normal considering we had won.

“I’m getting fed up with it and it is frustrating as we also got targeted at Nuneaton on January 3, although this time it looked like a random act.”

PAOK - AEK - Cup - 16/03/2011

Source : Reuters

PAOK face punishment after pitch invasion

PAOK Salonika face sanctions after fans invaded the pitch and a goalkeeper was hit by a flare at a Cup match on Wednesday, the Greek soccer federation (EPO) said on Thursday.

"The Federation will examine the details of the case and some form of punishment is expected," a spokesman told Reuters, adding that the soccer body was still awaiting all the details.

PAOK lost 1-0 to AEK Athens in a Greek Cup semi-final second leg match at Salonika's Toumba stadium that was marred by two outbreaks of violence.

The first came in the 58th minute when a flare hit AEK's Argentine goalkeeper Sebastian Saja. The player's jersey was singed but he was not injured.

Then, with barely a minute remaining, dozens of PAOK fans invaded the pitch and started clashing with riot police. TV cameras were also attacked as AEK players and the referee ran off the pitch.

Play was suspended for 20 minutes before the referee returned to blow the final whistle. No stoppage time was played.

The incident was the fifth pitch invasion of a season plagued by violence inside and outside Greek stadiums.

A players' strike was narrowly averted last week after their PSAP union failed to get the backing of all 16 top flight clubs -- a move prompted as a reaction to the increase in crowd violence.

Top clubs Olympiakos Pireaus and Panathinaikos were both handed supporter bans after hundreds of fans invaded the pitch, fighting police and attacking players following Olympiakos's 2-1 win over their closest rivals on Feb. 19.

Attacks by supporters on the Super League offices and the home of Olympiakos player Vasilis Torosidis followed.

Panathinaikos assigned bodyguards to several players as the fall-out continued from what has been dubbed the "derby of shame" by Greek media.

OM vs PSG : security - 17/03/2011

Source : The Canadian Press

PSG fans, reputedly the most violent in France, are not allowed to attend the match as a precaution. PSG's home game against Marseille at Parc des Princes was also played with away fans banned because of security fears.

Last season, there were major clashes in the Marseille city centre between the teams' supporters, causing Marseille's fans to be banned from attending the return match in Paris.

But rival factions of PSG fans fought each other in the streets around Parc des Princes, with a 38-year-old supporter later dying after going into a coma due to serious head injuries.

Bulgarian officials want prison sentences for football hooligans - 17/03/2011

Source : The Sofia Echo

A tougher stance is being proposed against the scourge of football hooliganism in Bulgaria. Until now, louts faced fines, which were rarely collected and hardly were a deterrent. But officials are now calling for hooligans to be locked up.

Members of Parliament's committee on education and sports said that the amendments must be included in the Penal Code, television channel bTV said.

To date, rowdy supporters face nothing more than a slap on the wrist, a few hours in custody, and fines ranging from 500 to 1000 leva, which, according to reports, are rarely if ever collected. But the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence would be a strong deterrent, committee chairperson Ognyan Stoichkov said.

Ognyanov has also proposed tougher sentencing for match fixing and rigged betting schemes, with fines of up to 50 000 leva, and prison sentences ranging from six to eight years.

Hooliganism in the country has been an inseparable part of football for decades, but it was the recent match between Levski Sofia and arch rivals CSKA Sofia that caused widespread outrage and criticism.

During the derby on February 26 2011, CSKA supporters pelted police with slabs, missiles and corrugated iron from the G stand of Gerena stadium, Levski's home ground, before the police charged into the pens and evicted the entire 3000-strong contingent of supporters.

Several measures are being considered to reduce the level of mayhem at football grounds, including alcohol and drug monitoring at turnstiles, banning of fan marches, possible introduction of compulsory identity cards to fans, and stiffer fines.

Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandukova, who branded the hooligans in Sofia as "football extremists", has called for "coherent, effective and immediate measures" against them.

Greek football blighted bt '3000 hooligans' - 19/03/2011

Source : Timeslive.co.za

Greek football authorities are failing to tackle a force of over 3,000 "hard core" hooligans, a top official said on Friday as another high-profile league match degenerated into violence this week.

“There are around 30,000 organised fans (in Greece) and an estimated 3,000-3,500 constitute the hard core of the violence,” state secretary for sports Panos Bitsaxis told Vima FM radio.

“The football system is failing to deal with 3,000-3,500 people around the country, this is the basic cause of this condition,” he said.

Fan clashes occur almost every weekend in Greece and there are increasing instances of assault on players despite a raft of measures and laws enacted over the years to curb the violence.

On Wednesday, the Greek cup semi-final between PAOK Thessaloniki and AEK Athens was interrupted for nearly 20 minutes after a pitch invasion by home fans. PAOK fans had earlier also hit AEK goalkeeper Sebastian Saja with a flare.

In February, fans of Olympiakos spilled onto the pitch after a controversial victory over arch-rivals Panathinaikos and the visitors said several of their players were assaulted in the melee that followed.

“Things seem to be getting worse,” Bitsaxis warned.

Greek Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Geroulanos last week admitted that the country’s professional football was “in the gutter”.

“We will use all means at our disposal, starting with the funding of teams which may be cut if things are not corrected,” Geroulanos said.

The Greek state has now stopped football funding, Bitsaxis said.

Professional leagues annually earn around 75 million euros ($105 million) from the state and amateur leagues draw an additional 10-11 million euros, he said.

Match-fixing claims were the latest blow to the sport after a prominent lawyer this month accused a top-flight club chairman of attempting to influence referees, presenting taped phonecalls as evidence.

A sports prosecutor is looking into the affair.

SAFC football yobs bring disgrace on their club - 19/03/2011

Source : http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk

A FOOTBALL yob snared in a clash with police was a ringleader in one of the region’s most notorious moments of football madness.

Jason Jameson was among a mob of Sunderland fans who battled with police stopping an ambush by rival Newcastle thugs.

Four police dogs were hurt in the mayhem while three men needed hospital treatment, and footage posted on the internet showed one lying unconscious in a pool of blood.

Jameson, 40, kept his freedom on a 51-week suspended jail term after admitting affray.

But he was served with a tough Football Banning Order to keep him away from any match for the next five years.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 40-year-old from Maud Street, Fulwell, Sunderland, had been a key figure in the battle between ultra Newcastle and Sunderland hooligans at North Shields ferry terminal in 2000.

“It is quite clear Jameson was very much one of the leaders of that particular incident,” said Christopher Knox, prosecuting.

“There was by prior agreement a confrontation between the Seaburn Casuals – still a term in point today and some still have tattoos to prove it – and the Newcastle Gremlins.

“There was an extremely violent confrontation involving the use of weapons. It’s right to say Jameson was very much one of the leaders of that operation”.

The battle – organised by the rival gangs – was so savage it was compared to a scene from the movie Braveheart.

One man found unconscious on the Quayside had suffered a life-threatening head injury and been stabbed in the back. Jameson received a four-year jail sentence after being convicted of conspiracy to commit violent disorder.

But he restored his links to football after his release from prison.

And he was among Sunderland fans whose trains arrived at Central Station from an away game in Scotland on August 8, 2009.

Police had already realised a gang of Newcastle rivals – armed with a baton and smoke bomb – were preparing to meet the Sunderland followers and managed to head them off during a series of ugly clashes.

But after struggling to contain a “surge” as the train load of Sunderland fans reached the platform, fresh violence erupted.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Guy Whitburn described the disorder – some of it captured on CCTV – as “disgraceful.”

And after Jameson admitted affray, Judge Whitburn told him “This was a very serious matter. A number of members of the public were extremely frightened by what happened, and you have convictions for football-related violence in the past.

“Your football supporting days are virtually over”.

Paul Cross, defending, said Jameson had already been drifting away from football. His interest in attending matches has waned very substantially in recent times,” Mr Cross told the court.

Jameson shared the dock with eight other men who admitted affray.

David Brooke, 37, of Association Road, Roker, Sunderland who had also been jailed for his part in the ferry landing fight was given a 36-week jail term, suspended for two years with 100 hours’ unpaid work and a five-year Football Banning Order.

The others were: Bradley Allen, 20, of Edgeworth Crescent, Sunderland, given a 12-month community order, 100 hours’ unpaid work, and three-year Football Banning Order; Peter Jones, 43, of Benfleet Avenue, Town End Farm, Sunderland, given a community order with three-month curfew and 12-month prohibition from football matches; John Dunn, 42, of Maria Street, New Silksworth, given a community order with 100 hours’ unpaid work and 12 month prohibition from matches; Frederick Potter, 51, of Colchester Terrace, High Barnes, Sunderland, given a community order with 100 hours’ unpaid work and 12-month prohibition from matches; Colin Shaw, of Hazeldene Way, Sunderland, given an 18-month community order, £500 fine and prohibition from matches for 18 months; Allan Brown, 33, of Duke Street, Seaham, fined £500 with 12-month prohibition from matches and Michael Winch, 27, of James Street, Southwick, Sunderland, given a 12-month community order and 12-month prohibition from matches.

A further defendant, James Ward, 21, of Baker Street, Sunderland, was given a conditional discharge after admitting a public order offence.

Match ban for Plymouth Argyle fan who pulled police horse reins - 18/03/2011

Source : Thisisplymouth.co.uk

A PLYMOUTH Argyle supporter pulled the reins of a police horse and nearly threw an officer to the ground at the second Devon derby match last year, a court heard.

Former soldier Paul Toovey, aged 43, has been banned from football matches for three years after the incident at Home Park.

Toovey, now a supermarket security guard, cried at Plymouth Magistrates' Court as he owned up to what he called 'a stupid, black moment in my life'.

Argyle fan Toovey, of Newton Abbot, admitted assaulting a police officer after the League One clash with Exeter on December 11.

Magistrates gave him a football banning order for three years which bans him from soccer games and obliges him to hand in his passport when England play abroad.

He was also fined £475, ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and £15 victim surcharge.

Angela Furniss, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said that mounted police from South Wales were deployed to clear Argyle fans from outside the ground.

She added that the horses were successful in moving supporters away.

But Mrs Furniss said that Toovey then jumped up towards one of the mounted officers, causing other supporters to look around.

She added: "The defendant grabbed hold of the horse's reins and dropped to the ground, causing the horse's head to drop violently.

"The horse raised its head and nearly unseated the rider but he managed to gain control."

Toovey, who has no previous convictions, admitted in police interview that he had drunk seven pints before the 3pm game.

Representing himself in court, Toovey said: "I have to apologise this was completely out of character. I was in the Armed Services for 22 years with an exemplary record.

"This was a stupid, black moment in my life."

Toovey said that he worked with police in his role as a security officer at a supermarket in Newton Abbot.

Cardiff City fan injured in fall

A Cardiff football supporter has been seriously injured after falling from a stand during the Cardiff match at Millwall, say the Metropolitan Police.

Eye-witnesses said the 30-year-old man fell about 20 ft (6m) from the upper tier seating at the New Den ground.

A police spokesman said officers are investigating but no-one has been arrested.

The fan is in a serious but stable condition in a south London hospital.

He fell from the upper tier seating at the away supporters' end of the ground.

A London ambulance service spokesman said the man had sustained head injures

The championship game ended in a three-all draw. Play was not interrupted while paramedics treated the man at the scene.

JONES CONCERN FOR INJURED FAN

Cardiff boss Dave Jones was concerned only about the fan injured in a fall during Saturday's 3-3 npower Championship draw with Millwall at The Den and not the result.

The Bluebirds supporter fell out of the top tier of the away stand into the seats below as the visiting fans were celebrating Chris Burke's 48th-minute opener for the Welsh side.

The male fan fell 15 feet and was taken to hospital with head and neck injuries, Millwall said in a statement. The club said he was in a stable condition.

All the goals came in the second half, Liam Trotter with a penalty, Kevin Lisbie and Steve Morison netting for the Lions, Burke scoring twice and Peter Whittingham once for City.

But Jones' thoughts were with the injured fan.

He said: "I couldn't give two hoots about the result after that. One or two of the players saw it and Craig [Bellamy] said it made him feel physically sick.

"We don't know much about him but all we'll say is that we as a club send our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

"We desperately want to do well for our supporters and as a club we have a duty to them. At the moment, we are all just concerned about that guy."

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett also expressed his concern about the fan.

"We wish the lad well who fell from the stand. I didn't see it myself but Neil Harris did and said it wasn't good," he said.

A statement on the Millwall website read: "A male Cardiff fan climbed on to the yellow safety railing, lost his footing and fell into the low tier, some 15 feet.

"He received lengthy treatment by Millwall club doctors and the matchday medical team and was taken to Kings College Hospital by ambulance.

"He sustained head and neck injuries and is currently in a 'stable condition'. His next of kin have been informed.

"Police are investigating and the Health and Safety Executive have been informed."

Serious incidents at Vélez-San Lorenzo match leave one dead

A San Lorenzo fan died yesterday shortly before the beginning of the first division Clausura soccer tournament match between Vélez Sársfield and San Lorenzo about 150 metres away from the José Amalfitani stadium in the Buenos Aires city neighbourhood of Liniers.

The victim was identified as Ramón Aramayo, 36, who was found dead minutes before the kickoff on the sidewalk of Barragán street — a block and a half from the visit entrance to the Vélez stadium. Early statements from police sources said the circumstances of the death were not clear and claimed the man may have died of a heart attack.

However, later reports — including San Lorenzo President Carlos Abdo’s — admitted the man could have been killed in a clash with police officers or by stones thrown by the rival hooligan gang. Forensics were conducting an autopsy at press time.

The victim’s wife, Mabel Aramayo accused the police of the death of his husband and claimed the man had been “beaten up and handcuffed.”

Both the Vélez and San Lorenzo governing committees regretted the incident in statements yesterday. San Lorenzo expressed their “deepest regret” to the relatives of Aramayo and offered to grant them the necessary “personal and judicial support.”

The officials expressed their confidence in the work of the judiciary and insisted the Vélez Sársfield leadership “tried to impede any kind of violence,” although they admitted San Lorenzo fans were attacked when they arrived at the stadium. However, the statement claimed that the incident had no relation with the death of Aramayo.

Some 250 people have died in soccer-related violence in Argentina since the game turned professional in 1931.

The death yesterday recalled that of a 21-year-old Vélez fan who died in 2008 after being shot on the way to a match at San Lorenzo. It was never clear if he was shot by an opposing fan.

There is believed to be no connection between the two events.

Deaths at Argentine soccer matches are relatively unusual, but many club games are marked by rival hooligan gangs fighting inside and outside the stadium. The violence usually takes place between organized hooligan gangs who attend matches and often control parking and vending services around the stadiums.

The Argentine Football Association and its president Julio Grondona have been repeatedly criticized for not doing enough to stem the violence, and are often accused of looking the other way.
