| Paganese fans caused troubles - 14/04/1997
Source: Reuters
Irate fans of a local league Italian soccer club invaded a town hall on Monday after a match involving rivals from nearby Angri. Around 400 Real Paganese supporters invaded municipal offices in the small town of Pagani, south of Naples, and smashed windows and damaged furnishings.
The Ansa news agency said the fans saw red when Paganese, Real Pagenese's local rivals, failed to turn up for a home match against Angri which had been moved to the southern port of Salerno for reasons of public order. Angri lead the local league ahead of Real Paganese and stood to be awarded the points from the no-show match.
The Real fans accused Paganese of sabotaging their chances. They were also angry with the mayor whom they blamed for the match being moved from Pagani to Salerno. _________________

| Fiorentina fined and banned after violence - 29/04/1997
Source: Reuters
Fiorentina were ordered to play their next two European matches 500 kms from Florence and were also fined 75,000 Swiss francs ($51,000) by UEFA on Tuesday. European soccer's governing body punished the Italian club following disturbances when they played Barcelona in the second leg of their European Cup Winners' Cup semifinal second leg last Wednesday.
Fiorentina said immediately that they would appeal against the stadium ban and a four-match European sanction imposed on Portuguese midfielder Rui Costa for insulting the Swedish referee after the match.
Barcelona coach Bobby Robson was hit by a bottle while players Sergei Barjuan and Ivan de la Pena were hit by other objects thrown by Fiorentina fans as the Spaniards won 2-0 at theArtemio Franchi Stadium to go through 3-1 on aggregate. The referee repeatedly threatened to suspend the match and fans were warned.
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Committee who made the decisions, also suspended Fiorentina's Swede Stefan Schwarz for three matches for insulting the referee. Fiorentina's Luis Oliveira, who was sent off, wassuspended for two matches as was Barcelona's Miguel Nadal.
"We accept the ruling calmly but the four match ban given to Rui Costa we cannot explain," said Fiorentina general manager Giancarlo Antognoni. "He was the captain, he was supposed to talk to the referee.
"We will appeal against the stadium ban as well as those on the players although, I repeat, we respect UEFA's sentence." Antognoni added that he hoped the fans, who have one of the worst reputations in Italy, had learned their lesson. _________________

| Dinamo Bucarest - Steaua Bucarest - 11/05/1997Source: Reuters Romanian authorities have detained 59 soccer fans and fined 1,000 others since supporters set fire to a stand in a Bucharest stadium before a derby match last weekend, police said Tuesday. A police spokesman said an inquiry was continuing into the actions of the 59 fans held in Bucharest jails since last Saturday's match in which Steaua Bucharest beat arch-rivals Dinamo. The others, charged with minor public order offenses, were fined the equivalent of $3 to $17 in a country where average monthly wages stand at about $80. More than 700 seats were destroyed and police herded some 2,000 supporters out of the stadium into parking lots to identify troublemakers. There were no injuries and the match was delayed only briefly. Police said an initial investigation showed Dinamo Bucharest supporters had brought rudimentary incendiary devices made of soft drink cans filled with varnish into Steaua's ground. Devices were concealed in drums to dupe the thousands of police drafted to the stadium in anticipation of trouble. The incident was one of the most serious in a worsening wave of soccer violence unleashed since the 1989 fall of Communism. Steaua, traditionally representing the military, and Dinamo, associated with the police, have a long history of bitter fan rivalry. Most Romanian clubs are believed to have troublemakers among their supporters, sometimes organized into armed gangs with exotic names. _________________ | |

| England: Policeman hurt as rugby fans clash - 24/03/1997
Source:Bolton Evening News
A POLICE officer was hurt when rival rugby fans clashed after the Silk Cut Plate semi-final tie between Leigh and Hull Kingston Rovers, yesterday.
And today Leigh RL chairman Mick Higgins blasted the troublemakers as 'scum' and promised the culprits would be banned from the ground for life.
The police officer was injured after being hit on the shoulder by a missile thrown in the hostilities following Leigh's home defeat at Hilton Park.
The officer, who was not believed to be seriously injured, declined hospital treatment.
Two fans were arrested for public order offences and were cautioned by police following the trouble which erupted in surrounding streets.
A police spokesman said the police helicopter was drafted in along with extra officers to regain order.
The Hull fans, celebrating their 48 point win over Leigh's 20 points, were escorted from the area.
Leigh chairman Mick Higgins said: "We are in discussion with the police with regard to the identity of those involved. If we can put names to faces we will ban them from Hilton Park for life."
"These yobs, and there are only a handful, ruined the day for me, the players and the vast majority of a very sporting crowd.
"It's very disturbing that the Leigh club seems to be getting a bad reputation."
Police are investigating reports that the trouble was caused by a fringe element of hooligans from Manchester, Salford and Swinton who had come to antagonise the visiting Hull fans. _________________

| Bury: Ban soccer shame fan, urges Bury boss - 10/02/19997
Source: Bolton Evening News
BURY soccer boss Stan Ternent is urging the FA to impose a nationwide ban on a fan who shamed football by attacking a referee.
The man ran onto the pitch at Gigg Lane and grabbed referee Ian Cruickshanks around the neck.
He also appeared to punch the referee before he was overpowered by stewards.
The incident during the match against Bournemouth stunned the players and officials. Representatives from both teams bitterly condemned the incident.
Today officials from Bury were keeping their fingers crossed that the club would avoid punishment for the pitch invasion by the fan.
A 29-year-old man from Bournemouth was arrested after the incident. He was taken to Bury Police Station and charged with assault and encroachment onto the playing area.
He was bailed to appear before Bury magistrates on March 10. The incident happened 29 minutes into the game - nine minutes after Mr Cruickshanks had awarded Bury a controversial penalty.
The man, who was among the visiting fans, climbed onto the pitch at the Manchester Road end of the ground and ran through a cordon of stewards before lunging at the referee.
Bury manager Stan Ternent said: "That guy should be banned for life from every football club in the country. "He should be taught a lesson. Football does not need it and I hope it does not reflect on the good name of Bury Football Club."
Bury chairman Terry Robinson said: "We have not experienced anything like this before. Our sympathy is with the referee.
"We are happy to leave this matter in the hands of the appropriate people." _________________

A police helicopter and 30 officers were called in to escort the Halifax Town coaches out of the city.Gloucestershire police force confirmed that there had been incidents in the city centre before the game between rival fans. Police arrived with dogs and Gloucestershires only police helicopter was drafted in from Bristol. Only a handful from both sides let down a great result for us by the trouble. We are a family club; people should not believe what they read about Gloucester City fans.
