Had a few scrapes over the years but one that really sticks in my mind in Birmingham at home in 1989...£3.50 to stand in the Arthur right next to the Birmingham fans, and by the end of the night I had picked up £2.50 in coins thrown at us! I was 16 and terrified not of the fighting but of the whole hillsboro scenario happening again! , seeing people being carted off on stretchers I was convinced they were dead!
There was some serious geezers in the Arthur that day and i remember thinking, 4 - 1 up Im going home , only to be blocked from leaving the ground by the Law because of the Birmingham fans that got locked out milling around outside ...when we were allowed to go it was kicking off every where, and I had to literally fight my way along Park road and I remember one top boy shouting "if they are in fancy dress just lamp them" or words to that effect! they seemed to be everywhere !

Hundreds of rival soccer fans battled each other and attacked the police today during riots on the day of the Netherlands-West Germany World Cup qualifying match. At least 23 people were reported injured.
Fans also went on a rampage downtown before the game, hurling bricks at the police and smashing windows.
The police said they had arrested 40 fans, mostly during fights outside the Feyenoord Stadium while the two teams were playing inside, according to a police spokeswoman, Ellen Peeters. She said rival fans had attacked one another and battled the police who intervened. About 1,500 fans were involved in that disorder, the police said. The authorities deployed 600 officers, including 250 riot police, during the match for fear of a repeat of the stadium disaster in Sheffield, England, on April 15, when 95 people were killed in the crush of the crowd.
Dutch fans had threatened to storm the stadium, which has a capacity of 57,000, unless more tickets became available for the sold-out game. Some people believe such a stampede is what caused the deaths in Sheffield. The game today ended in a 1-1 tie.
