The Public Security Police (PSP) identified 154 supporters of the Croatian football club Hajduk Split for creating unrest in Guimarães on Tuesday evening.

Videos posted on social networks show torches and firecrackers launched in public space and against buildings on Rua Alfredo Guimarães, between Praça da Oliveira and the Museu de Alberto Sampaio, with the sound of breaking glass. In photographs also published, it is possible to see damaged esplanades, with dozens of people fleeing these public places to escape Croatian fans.

In a press release published this Wednesday, the command of the Braga district of the PSP confirms having received complaints concerning "about 100 individuals" "causing disturbances", in particular "throwing furniture from terraces and deflagration of pyrotechnic artifacts" towards 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The PSP claim that the fans then left Guimarães in five buses bound for Porto.

"After all the security conditions had been met", the PSP approached the buses and identified 122 Croatian citizens, 23 Portuguese and nine supporters of other nationalities, having also seized "a jar of tobacco, a brass knuckles and a balaclava".

Croatian Football Fan Arrested in Portugal for Attacking TV Cameraman

A Hajduk Split football fan was arrested in the northern Portuguese city of Guimarães on Wednesday night for attacking a television cameraman after a Europa Conference League qualifying match with the home side Vitoria.

Vitoria won 1-0, but failed to qualify for the play-off because it had lost 1-3 in Split a week ago.

After leaving the stadium, a group of Hajduk supporters lunged at a television cameraman, and police used truncheons, tear gas and rubber bullets, footage from the Portuguese Sport TV channel shows.

The fan who attacked the TVI/CNN reporter has been arrested and will be brought before an investigating magistrate on Thursday, a reporter with CNN Portugal said.

Several vehicles with Croatian number plates were damaged in a car park next to the railway station in the nearby city of Trofa, the O Jogo sports newspaper reported. A photograph showed a white van with Split number plates with its windows smashed and another van and a car with punctured tyres.

The night before the match, the police stopped five buses with Hajduk fans en route to Porto. On board were 154 persons, including 122 Croatian nationals, 23 Portuguese nationals, and nine nationals of other countries. They were stopped after rioting in the streets of Guimarães.

In Guimarães, around 10.30 pm on Tuesday, about 100 people, most with their faces masked and dressed in black, threw flares and chairs at people sitting on the terraces of cafes, sending them fleeing in fear.

No one was hurt, and no one reported any property damage the next morning, police said. All 154 fans travelling on buses were released after identification. Police found a smoke bomb, a knuckleduster, and a ski mask on them.

The sports newspapers Record and O Jogo quoted the Ministry of the Interior as saying that the Hajduk fans were joined by supporters of at least one Portuguese football fan group and that the incidents in Guimarães were planned. Record identified this group as No Name Boys, the supporters of Benfica Lisbon, who are friends with Hajduk's Torcida fans.

There were tense scenes at the Sultan Muhammad IV stadium here as more than 100 football fans of Kelantan and Perak FC were involved in a confrontation of sorts following the former's defeat in a Premier League match.

No one was injured in the incident, which is believed to have started when a fan from one side provoked the other side.

Though no one came to blows, plastic bottles and other items could be seen being thrown as things became heated.

The incident happened inside the stadium about 6.30pm after Perak beat Kelantan FC 2-1.

The incident also saw the windscreen of a tour bus rented by Perak fans damaged when Kelantan fans were believed to have hit it with stones.

A 14-second video clip on the incident went viral on social media tonight.

Police were deployed to the scene to calm down the two groups before escorting Perak fans to the state police headquarters in Jalan Bayam here.

The fans, including several women, would be sent to Perak on board three tour buses.

It is learnt that at least three locals were detained by police for causing damage to the bus.

This is not the first time Perak fans were involved in a quarrel with Kelantan fans. In 2017, a fight occurred between fans of the two teams, also at the same venue.

Fifteen football fans have been banned from attending matches for a total of 70 years for their roles in violent confrontations with visiting supporters last season. An investigation into disorder before Leicester City’s UEFA Europa Conference League home match against Napoli in September last year identified a number of offenders.

Police officers had to go into the crowd at the full-time whistle at the King Power Stadium after home and away supporters clashed. Missiles were thrown between the two sets of fans and violence broke out in the corner where the away end meets the north family stand.

Earlier in the day, a number of people were arrested after Napoli and City fans clashed on the outskirts of the city centre. Police said clashes, during which those taking part removed their belts to use as weapons, took place in the Millstone Lane area.

While 17 fans were initially charged with various offences by Leicestershire Police, 15 were convicted. One man was given a suspended custodial sentence, while others were ordered to undertake unpaid work and pay fines.

Twelve fans were given five-year football banning orders, one fan was banned for four years and two were given three-year bans. The force is set to claim back £16,500 from the United Kingdom Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) as a result of the charges.

The money will be reinvested back into preventing and tackling crime, said a spokesperson for the force. Chief Inspector Dan Pedley, who was match commander for the game against Napoli, said: “All those who have received banning orders were found to have been involved in disorder prior to kick-off.

“We have a robust policing operation in force for each game, but unfortunately, there are occasionally pockets of supporters who are out to cause trouble. I’m pleased that following a thorough investigation, those involved are facing the consequences of their actions.”

Pc Dave Stevens, the force’s dedicated football officer, added: “Those who have been given banning orders are known risk supporters, so the fact they’re now excluded from causing further harm for the next few years is extremely beneficial to our football operations.”
