After a Dutch soccer star left his team to sign with its rival Ajax, a team with many fans that affectionately call themselves “Jews,” he was drawn into an antisemitic mural in Rotterdam.
The mural, which appeared after 29-year-old soccer player Steven Berghuis signed with Ajax on Monday, contained the text “Jews always run away” and included a portrait of Berghuis with an enlarged nose, a kippah, and a concentration camp prison shirt with a yellow Jewish star of the kind Nazis forced Jews to wear.
Ajax’s fanbase has had a high percentage of Jews for decades, and fans often fly Israeli flags at matches. Fans of opposing teams have sometimes chanted antisemitic and otherwise offensive slogans at Ajax players and supporters.
Berghuis, who also plays for the Dutch national team, left Feyenoord to join Ajax. The two clubs are two of the country’s most storied franchises, and bitter rivals.
The mural was removed a few hours after it was put up, and the antisemitic act was condemned by both teams and by local authorities.
The Israeli Information and Documentation Center, or CIDI, an organization combating antisemitism in the Netherlands said that it had filed a police complaint.
There was a “good chance” the culprit would be caught thanks to nearby closed-circuit cameras, CIDI said, according to The Algemeiner.

After a months-long investigation, police in Thessaloniki have identified the seven suspects, all aged in their 20s, who took part in an attack two years ago against five rival soccer fans in the area of Kamara.
The suspects are two foreign nationals and five Greeks, against whom a case was filed for disturbing the common peace, causing grievous bodily harm by complicity, robbery, damage to foreign property and committing violence on the occasion of sporting events.
They are also charged with violating weapons laws. The incident happened early in the morning of July 26 in 2019, when the perpetrators attacked the five rival fans, who had just parked their vehicle in the area of Kamara, using metal and wooden objects.
Two young Greeks, aged 21 and 22, were injured in the attack.

Edinburgh police rush to Tynecastle Park as gangs brawl and throw bottles
This is the moment a huge fight broke out between crowds of football fans outside Tynecastle Park this evening - just an hour before kick-off.
Celtic and Hearts are kicking off the Scottish Premier League season this evening (8pm) but police are already racing to disperse crowds of fighting men who are reportedly 'throwing glass bottles' at one another.
In footage shared with Edinburgh Live, police officers can be seen in the midst of a violent brawl as they try to separate the football supporters.
Individuals can be seen taking strikes at one another, with many kicking others in the skirmish - one resident tweeted that they were 'throwing glass bottles' at people entering the stadium.
An eye-witness at the scene told Edinburgh Live: "A group of Celtic fans appeared outside the Athletic Arms pub and made their way down towards Gorgie Road towards the stadium.
"They were watched by police although a group of Hearts fans also turned up and there were scuffles outside the main stand.
"There was a big police presence on the scene pretty quickly and they managed to keep the two groups apart and send them on their way in different directions."
One person reported on Twitter: "A gang of them ran down outside the plaza as we were going passed. Lobbing cans and glass bottles. Then a couple police cars came zooming down. Seemed to me the police were underprepared even though there’s no away fans."
