Cyprus: Nicolaou hits out at football hooligans - 18/07/2017

Source:  http://www.in-cyprus.com

Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou has hit out against football hooliganism in light of the injury of an elderly lady during a friendly between APOEL and Anorthosis at Dasaki, Achna.

“It’s shameful for every civilised society,” said Nicolaou in a written statement.

“The government condemns in the strongest of ways this kind of behaviour,” added Nicolaou.

He called on stakeholders to take the conscious decision to combat once and for all sports related violence irrespective of place and time.

Nicolaou explained that the government’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy which has gradually been implemented since 2014 now results in hooligans appearing before the court within 24 hours of their arrest and their banning from sporting events.

“The arrests have increased while leaving those who wish to express violence and delinquency outside of the stadiums,” said Nicolaou.

Nicolaou pointed out that since 2015, the number of cases investigated by the police regarding hooliganism has dropped from 37 cases involving 78 people to 17 cases involving 25 people during the first quarter of 2017.

He attributed the drop to the preventative measures and the determination in combating the phenomenon.

“To be more effective we need to implement all the preventative measures,” said Nicolaou referring to the ‘fan’s identity card’ and upgraded CCTV systems as a first measure.

“Other measures and infrastructure provided for by the law can be introduced at a later stage,” he added.

Nicolaou is of the opinion that it will take two-and-a-half-years for all the safety and preventative measures to be introduced in the island’s stadiums.

“We would like to reintroduce our proposal for the creation of family stands,” said the Minister.

Ayr United - Kilmarnock FC - Betfred Cup - 14/07/2017

Source:  http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/

Trouble flared before the game but there were few arrested as fans inside the ground behaved themselves

Trouble flared at the Ayrshire derby clash with thugs seen battering people in the town centre.
Ayr was in lockdown as police officers formed a human barricade between Killie fans and the Honest Men followers.

A shocking image emerged of a mass brawl erupting beside Ayr Town Hall with yobs appearing to kick and punch a man sprawled on the ground.
The photo also shows a tracksuit wearing man knocked to the floor as hooded thugs scuffled beside safety railings.

The violence happened at about 7.20pm as thousands of people made their way to Somerset Park ahead of the 7.45pm kick-off on Friday.
Another picture emerged of an illegal blue smokebomb engulfing the stands as the highly anticipated game got underway.
A man was charged for waving a lit flare just outside Somerset Park on Back Hawkhill Avenue at 7.30pm.
The 24-year-old allegedly also had 0.7g of cocaine in his possession and will appear in court at a later date.

A fan who had been drinking in a packed Smiths bar in the build up to the game described the atmosphere as tense during the walk to the stadium.
He said: “Police told Kilmarnock fans who were walking to the football stadium to hold back as Ayr supporters came out of the Horsehoe bar in George Street.
“They escorted the visiting fans from George Street to the door of Somerset Park and kept the rival supporters apart.
“It was very tense and pretty hostile but I was expecting that for a game of that importance. I think police handled it well.”

A 6,500 crowd flocked to Ayr for the clash, which was televised live on BT Sport. United won the Betfred Cup tie 1-0.
Packed pubs around Ayrshire showed the game, which was the first time the clubs have faced each other at Somerset since 2009.

A police spokesman said there had been no arrests over the Ayr Town Hall violence earlier in the evening and it was unclear if the incident had been reported.

UEFA should heed Aberdeen horrors of Mostar and ensure fans never have to suffer again – Parks - 23/07/2017

Source: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/

Aberdeen supporters were viciously attacked in Bosnia and it}s not the first time they’ve been attacked as Gordon Parks can testify.

It wasn’t quite Behind Enemy Lines but last week’s trip to Bosnia with Aberdeen had that feel about it.
Dozens of Dons fans were attacked with flares, metal bars and bottles at a pub in Mostar on Wednesday night, leaving some bloodied and bruised.

Members of the Press were among the victims.
Sean Wallace of the Evening Express suffered a deep wound to the head and burns to his legs before being assaulted again hours
later by two thugs who commandeered his taxi.
When horrible incidents like these happen you have to file the story – but my hotel was put on lockdown as the trouble at the Black Dog pub raged a short distance away.

It triggered a few memories, Vietnam flashbacks if you will. It’s almost three years since Aberdeen travelled to Groningen and had to run the gauntlet of Dutch hooligans.
There were hundreds of them and they ran amok in the city centre – one thug was even pictured using a bike as his weapon of choice.
That memory, the terror on faces and that walk towards the Noordlease Stadion with the hordes on the hunt for victims is scarring.
Being in Prague with Hearts in 2006 was another example of the brutal side of following your club in Europe. Nutters dressed in black caused chaos in a boozer near the ground and a 64-year-old Lord Foulkes was booted in the head.
Wednesday was equally as scary. As I wondered if an early extraction was in order ahead of Dons’ Europa League clash with Siroki Brijeg, I heard Gene Hackman’s voice in my head: “Life is tough. I am very sorry. Now you pull yourself together.
“You do whatever it takes. Create some angles between you and your pursuers. Use your training. Use your head. Evade and survive, and we will bring you home.”

In the hours before the attacks, I was strolling around the ancient cobbled streets of what is a place of beauty and tranquillity. This is a city that was under siege during the Bosnian war and was witness to crimes against humanity but is moving on with dignity.
Dons fans were scattered around the pubs and there was no edge to the atmosphere, just high spirits. One caught my eye as we’d met before on our travels. Lovely guy, unassuming and a proper supporter who follows his club home and abroad.
He’d end up in hospital later that evening after suffering the worst of the Mostar violence.

Few managers conduct themselves better than Derek McInnes and he told of his disgust at the incidents which he hopes won’t deter Dons fans from making the Europa League trek to far and wide in the future.

His concern was an honest one from someone who has a genuine appreciation of the sacrifices some make to follow their team on to foreign soil.
What occurred in Mostar should be heeded by UEFA and policing should be beefed up when required.

It shouldn’t just be another footballing war story.

Scots prosecutors blasted after handing over Ajax hooligan suspects who carried out sickening attack on Celtic fans in Glasgow to Dutch authorities - 23/07/2017

Source: https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/

The Crown Office has decided to offload responsibility to public prosecutors in Holland 20 months on from the horror attacks

Fifteen Ajax supporters were identified as being behind a sickening attack on a number of Celtic bars, which left one pub owner requiring three titanium plates in his face for life.

But the Crown Office has decided to offload responsibility for justice to public prosecutors in Holland.
Billy Gold, one of the bar owners caught up in the mayhem said: “It’s a disgrace. If it had been homegrown hooligans, they would have been locked up that night and be in the Sheriff Court in the morning.”
Terror came to the east end of Glasgow in November 2015, when Celtic played host to Dutch side Ajax in a Europa League tie.
Despite advance warnings that Dutch hooligans were coming to Scotland for trouble, up to 40 visitors wearing masks and balaclavas were able to launch a highly-organised attack on four pubs popular with Celtic supporters.
Most were able to pull down the shutters to protect terrified fans inside but staff and patrons of the Hoops Bar on Gallowgate were targeted.
Bar boss Neil O’Donnell, 37, was battered senseless with an iron bar. When police eventually arrived, the thugs were still jumping on his head.

Mr O’Donnell said later: “I’ve got three titanium plates in my face, held together with six screws. Unfortunately, that is there permanently.”
Electrician Grant Kelly was dragged into the street with Mr O’Donnell. Friends told him that at one time, he was being kicked around the pavement by 30 people.
The 29-year-old from Hillington in Glasgow said: “It was incredible. I must have suffered concussion because the police found me in Central Station around an hour later, covered in blood.
“I have no idea how I got there. My cheekbone was fractured in three places, I lost seven or eight teeth and my jaw was broken in three places as well.
“To hear that our prosecutors have dropped it really angers me but somehow does not surprise me. Someone should be facing a charge of attempted murder.”
Using intelligence supplied by Dutch Police, the Crown Office were able to identify 15 suspects – one of them a woman – who had successfully made it back to Holland after the game.

Legal officials in Edinburgh were able to supply Scottish media with the ages, if not the names, of those believed to be behind the attack.
But more than 20 months later, the Crown Office has now admitted there is no prospect of anyone being held responsible in Scotland.

Instead, the Crown Office approached the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service and asked them to pursue the 15 individuals.
Murray Macara, a solicitor in Glasgow and a member of the Law Society’s Criminal Law Committee said: “I have never encountered this situation before.
“The Scottish authorities are basically asking the Dutch to take up the case because they did not want to do it themselves.
“You now need to ask yourself if the Dutch have the stomach for this. Are they really going to bother taking this to court?
“They will also be asking themselves if it’s in the public interest – in the Netherlands – to seek justice for victims in Scotland.”
In a statement, the Crown Office said: “The Procurator Fiscal at Glasgow received a report concerning a 23-year-old female and fourteen males aged between 19 and 38, in connection with alleged incidents on 26 November 2015.
“After carefully considering the facts and circumstances and discussing with representatives from the Netherlands, Crown Counsel instructed that the matter be transferred there for Dutch prosecutors to take forward.”

Billy Gold, 60, the owner of the Hielan Jessie pub, which was also attacked, said: “It was horrifying. This was violence on an industrial scale.
“It is disgraceful to think we endured all that grief and no-one is going to be prosecuted here. It’s all down to expediency and probably the cost of hauling them over from Amsterdam.”
Liam Kerr, the Conservatives’ justice spokesman said: “This was undoubtedly a barbaric attack.
“The Dutch authorities owe it to the victims to ensure that these hooligans are punished in the appropriate manner.”
Scottish Labour justice spokesperson Claire Baker MSP said: “This is a highly unusual situation and it is vital that justice is delivered to victims.”

A spokesman for the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service in Amsterdam said: “The Scottish Prosecutor Service has asked our office in June 2017 to take over the criminal proceedings of 15 persons who allegedly committed crimes in Glasgow.
Our legal assistance prosecutor has asked his counterpart in Scotland to send files and other relevant documents.
“Up until today we haven’t received these necessary files and documents.”

At 8.20pm, English men were in number outside a pub when troublemakers have attacked them in the city centre.
Seats, chairs and glasses were thrown and four people slighly injured and 8 other arrested.

Villa fan view:
"The attack on O'Reillys in Düsseldorf.
There were about 10 Villa with women and kids left in the pub at this point, whereas there'd been over 100 earlier with ex C Crew and Steamers. They waited until until all the lads had moved on.
Two French speaking lads sat amongst us for about an hour and mentioned that Anderlecht were in town. Those two lads were later at the forefront of this attack.
It's still to be confirmed if this was Anderlecht"

Brit football fans attacked with TABLES and CHAIRS by thugs at bar

According to the Birmingham Mail, the supporters were set upon by a large group of men while they were drinking in O’Reilly’s bar before the Cup of Traditions games against MSV Duisburg and Hertha Berlin.
Video filmed by the owner of another pub near the Irish bar appears to show the Villa fans being attacked outside.
Some supporters look as though they have been knocked to the ground.

Then suddenly one of the thugs runs in and kicks a man back onto the street as he starts to get up.
Meanwhile a horde of hooligans lob tables and chairs at the bar.
A crowd of people look on in disbelief as chaos breaks out in the quiet German city.
Eventually, the group turn and run away from the scene of destruction in the street.

The clip was shared by a Facebook group dedicated to Aston Villa’s travelling supporters.
In a caption with the video, it claimed there were “about 10 Villa with women and kids left in the pub” when the brutal attack happened.
It claimed the attackers waited until the majority of fans had left before targeting a small group that was left behind.
On the pitch, Villa won both games on Sunday to claim the Cup of Traditions, with former Chelsea captain John Terry lifting the trophy following his high-profile move to the club over the summer.
The club plays its last friendly in Germany today at 6pm BST against Arminia Bielefeld, after a match against Vitesse Arnhem was cancelled.

Linfield fan fined over sectarian singing at Celtic Park - 20/07/2017

Source: https://stv.tv/

Scott Colville from Belfast spent the night in cells in Glasgow after being arrested.

A Linfield fan has been fined for singing sectarian lyrics at Celtic Park before the Champions League qualifying tie on Wednesday night.

Scott Colville from Belfast was caught singing the song Super Rangers including the phrase "f****n b******s" at the stadium in Parkhead, Glasgow, where the Belfast side lost 4-0 to the Scottish champions.

The 46-year-old appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court from custody on Thursday.

The court heard the greengrocer will now "face the wrath of his wife" when he returns home.

Colville was arrested by officers before the match on Wednesday and spent a night in the cells before his court appearance.

He pleaded guilty to an offence contrary to the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act.

Sheriff Brian Cameron told Colville "I think the wrath of your wife will probably be more than the punishment I'm going to hand out, particularly when she hears you have been fined the sum of £300."

Procurator fiscal depute Lauren Staunton said: "Police witnesses observed the accused singing a well known football song 'Super Rangers'.

"They could hear the accused singing loudly 'we hate Celtic, f****n b******s'."

Kate Phillips, defending, said Colville had been drinking since he got on the ferry in Belfast on Wednesday morning and after arriving in Glasgow at around 3.30pm before the match.

She said: "He described the atmosphere as they walked in to Celtic Park as tense and somewhat boisterous and that there were the usual comments thrown from one side to the other.

"He was under the influence at the time and he found himself caught up in the atmosphere of everything else that going on and joined in with singing."

Ms Phillips added: "He will return to Belfast at some point today, to face the wrath of his wife who is not too impressed."

Malta: No arrests three weeks after Buġibba football violence - 26/07/2017

Source: https://www.timesofmalta.com

Red Star Belgrade fans vandalised property

Season 17/18 - July - Page 2 647631erb

No arrests were made in connection with disturbances in Buġibba three weeks ago by a group of Serbian football fans, the police confirmed.
The incidents occurred on July 5, when Red Star Belgrade fans who were in Malta for the Europa League tie against Floriana FC hurled abuse at passers-by and, in some cases, vandalised private property with graffiti.
At one point, police officers were seen following the Serbs in a patrol vehicle, but it could not be determined whether further action had been taken.

Though questions sent by the Times of Malta were not immediately answered, a few days ago the police informed this newspaper that no arrests had been made.
Sources said that the Buġibba incidents followed clashes bet-ween the Red Star supporters and their Serbian compatriots supporting Red Star’s eternal rivals, Partizan Belgrade.
Games between the two clubs have frequently been marred by hooliganism and violence.
Irate Buġibba residents vented their frustration on Facebook, saying that, despite filing various complaints with the police, the response had been weak. One uploaded a number of photos showing the damage and what looked like a group of Serbs causing disturbances in Triq iċ-Ċern, close to the former Buġibba Holiday Complex.
The residents noted that the spate of incidents involving foreign gangs had been going on for months, and notwithstanding repeated calls to beef up the police presence, the situation had not improved.
The issue has also been flagged by St Paul’s Bay mayor Graziella Galea, who called for a national action plan for the integration of migrants into Maltese communities.
Ms Galea also asked for more officers and for the deployment of tourism police, but the second request was refused.

England : 12 men are wanted by police after a section of Millwall fans invaded the pitch and caused trouble at Wembley following play-off final win over Bradford City - 23/07/2017

Source: http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/

Police have released images of 12 men believed to be Millwall fans involved in a pitch invasion and taunting of rival supporters and players at Wembley.
The Lions beat Bradford City in the League One play-off final on May 20.
A large number of fans from the Millwall section ran onto the pitch after the final whistle.
Some of those fans ran directly to the Bradford City half of the pitch and began to taunt the opposing team’s players and fans.

Detectives from the Met Police’s central football unit and public order command are now trying to trace 12 men thought to have been part of the trouble.

Detective Sergeant Neil Gunn said: “We would like to speak to those pictured in connection with offences including incursion onto the pitch, and possible offences under the Public Order Act.”

England : Manchester United and Liverpool football hooligans jailed after this shocking Old Trafford brawl - 26/07/2017

Source: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/

Four Manchester United supporters and five Liverpool fans have been jailed after a fight at Old Trafford described as the ‘worst disorder inside a football stadium in Manchester for 18 years’.

Season 17/18 - July - Page 2 422163manulfc

The violence at the Europa League match involved

otherwise ‘intelligent hard-working’ men with respectable jobs who succumbed to ‘tribalism’, a judge said as he sent all nine to prison.

The ‘ugly’ incident, which was captured on film by police and members of the public, took place during a knock-out match on March 17 which Liverpool went on to win.
It was sparked by away fans who'd booked seats in a stand reserved for United supporters and started chanting ‘provocatively’ in the 85th minute when their team’s triumph looked secure.
But then they went a step further - by unfurling a Liverpool banner.

This sparked what a judge described as a ‘guaranteed’ act of ‘tribalism’ from United fans, who hurled abuse and then used their fists.
Police and stewards - their numbers diminished as many had left to man the exits - formed a human cordon to divide the five Liverpool fans from the rest of the stand. But punches were thrown over their shoulders.
The escalating melee, which took place on the front edge of the Upper East tier with a 50ft drop below, was witnessed by families and children.
Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court heard it was Liverpool fans Patrick Cowhig, Carl Irvine, Joe McDonald, Ian Mullin and Sonny Parr behind the act of provocation.
The worst of the violence then came from United supporters Anthony Garner, Jonathan Silverwood, Daniel Ginocchio and Christopher Bullock, who handed themselves in after a police appeal.

The court heard that, having secured last-minute seats in the Upper East tier reserved for home fans, the Liverpool group ‘sat quietly’ for the first 85 minutes.
They then rose from their seats, chanting ‘provocatively’ and ‘revelling’ in the attention of Liverpool fans in the stand below, before unfurling the banner and appealing for fellow fans below to take their pictures.
Faced with their team’s defeat and their jeering rivals, some United supporters surged forward. Stewards suffered bruising in the violence that ensued.
Defending the Liverpool fans, one barrister said their part in the violence had been ‘in defence’ and one was left ‘crying in fear’.

But prosecuting, Michael Brady said: “This was not just an innocent celebration. Individually and collectively they caused a number of Manchester United fans to react in a variety of ways including, inevitably, the use of violence.”
And Judge Mark Savill described the result of their actions as the ’most inflammatory situation’.
Sentencing the two sets of rival fans in separate hearings on Tuesday, he accepted none of the nine defendants had arrived at the match with the intention of causing trouble.
He also noted that all were ‘intelligent, hard-working’ men with good character references, respectable jobs and were largely a credit to society.
But he added that was often the case for those with the means to watch live football matches, adding: “The problem is that in this type of offence often there are two sides to the sort of people who behave in this way.”
On the tier where the clash unfolded, he added: “There was a considerable drop. Anyone falling over that edge would have sustained very serious if not fatal injuries.

“In that stand were not just hooligans but members of the public seeking to enjoy a football match, with families and children.”
Describing the CCTV footage as ‘visceral’, he slammed the violence of the United fans, adding: “People who go to these football matches need to do so in the knowledge they will be safe and those who choose to involve themselves in public disorder must expect to go to prison.”
In sentencing the Liverpool fans, he added: “You all thought that you would show off.
“What did you think was likely to happen by behaving that way at a local derby in a stand full of rival fans, not least when a Liverpool flag was unfurled and you were all revelling and asking for fans below to take a photo?
“It was guaranteed to have caused the effect it did. Despite being asked to sit down, the atmosphere then changed.”

Describing their behaviour as ‘negative’ he said it had caused an ‘ugly, violent’ scene of public disorder.
After the hearing, Det Sgt Stephen Warrener, who was at the stadium on the night, said: “This is the worst disorder GMP has seen inside a football stadium in 18 years. I think the sentences are justified, as a father myself I want to be able to take my children to a football match and feel safe, as opposed to seeing these lunatics who cause a disturbance and ruin it for others.
“If they had fallen from the stand on to the people below it would have been potentially fatal. There was a also a child injured that day after other Liverpool fans threw seats.”
He said officers dividing the fans had ‘significant concerns’ about falling from the tier.

Russian football hooligans attack Scotland U21 hockey team celebrating European success - 26/07/2017

Source: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/

Russian football hooligans invaded a restaurant in St Petersburg and beat up several members of Scotland’s under-21 men’s hockey team.
The team were attacked as they celebrated winning a bronze medal in the European Championships.

Several players and staff were injured and one was kept overnight in hospital but released in time to fly home with the rest of the team on Sunday.

The thugs to blame were supporters of Zenit St Petersburg. Russia has a long history of football violence.
Scottish Hockey chief executive David Sweetman said: “This has been a frightening experience for the players and staff.
“The squad’s staff coped with the situation incredibly well. They deserve tremendous credit.”

Too many fans: Udinese vs. Hannover friendly called off - 27/07/2017

Source : http://nationalpost.com/

Local authorities in southern Austria have called off Sunday’s friendly match between Udinese and Hannover as the estimated number of spectators exceeds the capacity of the stadium.
The city of St. Veit says about 4,000 fans, including 280 potential football hooligans, were expected for the game at the ground of local amateur club FC Alpe Adria, which has a capacity of 2,430.
St. Veit mayor Gerhard Mock says “it’s a shame … but security comes first.”
