Go Ahead Eagles - Ajax - 21/07/2007

Source : AJAX USA

Eagles vs Ajax: violence, verbal abuse and 25 minutes of football...

This article should have been a match report. But it's not. Instead, we're going to tell you how badly things went wrong this afternoon in downtown Deventer and on the stands of the Adelaarshorst ('Eagles' Nest'), where hooligans battled behind one of the goals and Eagles supporters continuously hurled abuse at the Amsterdam visitors. The players felt so unsafe that they did not want to carry on. Referee Dick Jol took the only decision he could take: he discontinued the match.

In case you're interested in some 'football details': Ajax were 0-1 up at that point, on a goal by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in the 25th minute. Edgar Davids has just been stretchered off with what later turned out to be a broken shinbone. Ajax's new purchases, Ismael Urzaiz and Dennis Rommedahl, were not on the pitch (and not on the bench, either).

It should have been a wonderful afternoon and the first time for Henk ten Cate to return to the club he played for for many years. He still 'sponsors' the club, helped saving the club from bankruptcy and can be regarded as an unofficial 'Eagles ambassador'. Ten Cate must have looked forward to the friendly encounter with the red and yellow from Deventer, but alas: some of the supporters didn't think it was a friendly.

It started to go wrong early in the afternoon, as fights broke out in downtown Deventer. According to police reports some 200 Ajax and 100 Eagles hooligans were involved. A worrying omen for the match itself, because there was no fan segregation at the Eagles' Nest: all sections of the ground were 'mixed'.

The atmosphere at the ground (sold out with 6,400 spectators) was grim from the very start and it wasn't long before fights broke out behind one of the goals. The stream of (sometimes anti-Semitic) abuse from the home fans never seemed to stop and the players started to fear that aggressive fans would invade the pitch, which could easily have happened at a ground without fencing. Meanwhile, the battle in downtown Deventer went on. It appeared that most of the involved hooligans had no match tickets. The ongoing trouble in the town centre made it impossible for the police to deploy more people at the stadium: their troops were badly needed in the centre...

Only minutes after Huntelaar's goal, referee Dick Jol decided to interrupt the match for what initially seemed to be a brief 'cooling down period'. But the players felt so threatened (and were so sick of the constant stream of verbal abuse) that they did not feel like returning to the pitch. The referee understood their point and called the game off. Well over 6,000 'good' people, and a handful of 'bad' ones, could go home. Go Ahead Eagles' Open Day, which was supposed to start immediately after the friendly, was also cancelled. A sad, sad day for both clubs.

A deeply disappointed Henk ten Cate said: "Perhaps it's a good thing that the players draw the line for a change. I mean: how on earth can you play football in these circumstances?"

The friendly (?) at Go Ahead Eagles marked the end of Ajax's training camp in De Lutte. It was a great week, most of the time: the team worked hard in training, played increasingly well in their friendlies, two new players were added to the group and Wesley Sneijder announced that he will stay. But it all ended in tears, especially when the doctors had to conclude that Edgar Davids had broken his shinbone and will be out for at least three months.

Ajax had to be escorted out of Deventer by the police and drove back to Amsterdam, disappointed and angry.

Should we end this article with the match statistics...? We might as well, just for the record...

Football bans handed to 12 fans - 21/07/2007

Source : BBC NEWS

Bans totalling 84 years have been given to 12 people in Nottinghamshire ahead of the new football season.

Evidence against the troublemakers was collated by football intelligence officers and passed onto the county's three league clubs.

As a result Nottingham Forest has banned five supporters, Mansfield Town has banned four and Notts County has banned three supporters.

Individual bans range between four and 20 years.

The move is part of the PACT (Police and Clubs Together) scheme and means each fan is banned from home matches at the club they support and also banned from going to away matches at the other club grounds.

Banned supporters can attend away matches at grounds outside Nottinghamshire - however some out-of-county clubs support the PACT scheme and ban entry.

Football intelligence officer Roger Skinn said: "These banned supporters have either been arrested, ejected or have persistently caused trouble at football matches.

"As part of the PACT Scheme Nottinghamshire Police work in partnership with the local clubs to make football a safe, enjoyable environment for genuine fans to attend.

"These bans should send out a clear message that violence, disorderly and antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated."

The PACT scheme has also sent 13 letters to individuals warning them about their future behaviour and possible PACT action.

Chile files complaint against Canadian police in FIFA fight - 20/07/2007

Source : CBC News

Chile's foreign minister filed a formal complaint with Ottawa over what he called "unjustified aggression" by Toronto police as they scuffled with Chilean team members after a FIFA Under-20 World Cup soccer match.

The incident took place late Thursday after the team lost 3-0 to Argentina in a semifinal match at BMO Field in Toronto. According to a Chilean official, police used pepper spray and Tasered some players in order to prevent them from reaching a large fence that separated them from hundreds of angry, chanting fans.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said the reports of police using pepper spray and batons were "serious facts."

"In our opinion, what happened is particularly serious because the Chilean delegation suffered an unjustified use of force," Bachelet said.

On Friday morning, Chilean Foreign Minister Alejandro Foxley confirmed he sent a letter to his Canadian counterpart, Foreign Minister Peter MacKay, demanding the Canadian government explain why law enforcement officers reacted with what he described as such "unusual methods."

"You can't treat people who have gone there to represent Chile in a sporting event like this," said Foxley.

"Above all, we decided to send a diplomatic note … to make them understand the malaise in Chile over what happened, the excessive violence, and to formally ask them to give us a detailed explanation of why this happened and who is responsible."

A spokesman for Foreign Affairs in Ottawa, André Lamay, said later in the day that MacKay would not comment on the incident until Ottawa receives the official letter of complaint.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who was warmly received in Chile just days ago, was hesitant to say much about the incident.

"As we know, these international soccer matches are hotly contested and often become very emotional," Harper said in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. "Look, as you know, there are processes in Canada by which the authorities review these kinds of incidents."

When the brawl took place, tempers were already simmering because the team felt the officiating unfairly affected the outcome of the game.

Police eventually handcuffed several players, some of them bloodied and screaming, and escorted them back into the dressing room while shocked FIFA and Canadian soccer officials looked on.

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair issued a statement defending his force.

"The job of my officers was to respond in a firm, but fair, manner to end that violence. They are trained to do so, and that is what they did," he said.

None of the players were charged.

Carlisle - Newcastle - 21/07/2007

Source : News & Star

20 arrested at big match

TWENTY football fans were arrested in Carlisle on Saturday as the city played host to Premiership giants Newcastle.

Most of the trouble was in or around the Blues’ Brunton Park ground but there was also violence at the train station after the game when fans clashed with police.

It was followed by a night of drink-fuelled disorder on Botchergate, where seven further arrests were made.

An eyewitness on the train from Liverpool to Scotland looked on in horror as fans battled with police at the station.

Terrence Craven said the violence erupted at 8pm as he and his wife sat on the train which had stopped for lighting repairs.

“It was complete mayhem,” said Mr Craven.

“A scuffle kicked off and people were being arrested. We were on the train about 20 yards away so we could see everything. People on that train were shocked.

“It was mainly youths and young men. It didn’t seem to be a clash with Carlisle fans, just Newcastle fans and police. It was all alcohol-fuelled. Some could barely stand up.

“The police were being very reasonable and patient but these fans just kept coming at them.

“They definitely weren’t heavy handed. I have the utmost respect for them.”

Extra police were on duty throughout the day to cover the pre-season friendly.

The match attracted a crowd of around 12,000 and ended in a 1-1 draw.

Although the majority of fans were well-behaved and enjoyed the day, police were kept busy before, during and after the game.

Of the 20 arrested, eight were Carlisle United fans and 12 were part of the travelling Newcastle United contingent.

The offences were mainly public disorder, violence, breach of the peace and being drunk and disorderly. Three away fans were also arrested towards the end of the match for trying to invade the pitch.

Sevilla Hit With UEFA Fine For Osasuna Controversy - 20/07/2007

Source : Goal.com

The rojiblancos narrowly escaped a one game stadium ban after UEFA took a dim view of the flares, fireworks and small pitch invasions that coloured Sevilla's second-leg win over Osasuna in the UEFA Cup semi final...

UEFA have fined Sevilla FC 100,000 Swiss francs (approx. 64,000 Euros) after crowd trouble in their semi final second leg tie against Osasuna at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

A segment of the home support launched flares and fireworks, some at the direction of the pitch. Furthermore - and more seriously - some fans invaded the pitch at full time, in high spirits following the 2-0 victory on the night (2-1 on aggregate) that led Sevilla to their second successive UEFA Cup final.

Sevilla went on to lift the trophy after a tense contest with Espanyol in Glasgow, but have been awaiting UEFA's wrath following the incident in the semis.

The rojiblancos have been punished before for such actions by fans in European competition. It was rumoured that UEFA were considering forcing the Andalucian side to play their inaugural Champions League game behind closed doors, but the club insists that they are only to receive a fine, escaping further punishment.

GAE-AJAX: No Arrests after Severe Football Riots - 24/07/2007

Source : NIS News Bulletin

Not a single arrest was made by police during severe riots between groups of rival football fans in Deventer on Saturday. It was a deliberate choice.

Prior to the friendly match between local club Go Ahead Eagles and Ajax from Amsterdam, large riots broke out in Deventer city centre. Terrace chairs and ashtrays were hurled and the regular public hid in shops, which hurriedly closed their doors. Several hours later, the match went ahead as planned, but after 20 minutes the referee halted it, because the riots had continued on the stands.

Some 200 Ajax supporters had travelled from Amsterdam to Deventer under police supervision. Yet not a single supporter was arrested once the confrontation with around 100 Go Ahead Eagles fans broke out.

According to police spokesperson Wim Dierkx, the police had opted for a "de-escalation policy" consciously. "A fair was taking place on the central square; there was a large crowd of shoppers and we did not wish to endanger them by offering much resistance". Only one hooligan was arrested during the riots in the stadium.

Quakers' fan match ban over derby clash - 24/07/2007

Source : The Northern Echo

A DARLINGTON FC fan has been banned from all football matches for the next three years for affray at last season's derby with Hartlepool United.

Sean Gary Hodgson was filmed by police hurling abuse at opposition supporters before, during and after the crunch match on March 25.

The 20-year-old was caught on camera singing "die Poolie die" and was one of several fans who had to be restrained by police when they knocked over advertising hoardings in an attempt to invade the pitch at the TFM Darlington Arena.

advertisementDarlington Magistrates Court was shown nearly 30 minutes of video footage taken at the match, which the Quakers' lost 3-0.

The film also showed Hodgson, dressed in a bright red jacket and a Rockport sweater, with scores of other fans being contained by riot police with dogs and horses outside Hogan's pub at Victoria Road.

The unemployed fork lift truck driver was also part of a gang of supporters outside the Cleveland Bridge Social Club on Neasham Road who were charged by mounted police when they refused to move.

Hodgson, who lives at Great North Road, Skeeby, near Richmond, pleaded guilty to a charge of affray. He had no previous convictions.

The court heard that he drank up to seven pints of lager before the match after meeting up with friends in Darlington town centre.

Rory Todd, mitigating, said that the large amount of alcohol caused Hodgson to act out of character.

"He accepts his behaviour was unacceptable and he is ashamed," he said.

"There was something of a pack mentality in that he was in a big crowd and got somewhat swept along with it.

"There was never any contact with any of the opposition fans.

"This was basically alcohol induced bravado."

Magistrates banned Hodgson from all Football Association matches in England and Wales for the next three years. He is also barred from being within 1.5miles of the TFM Arena on match days for four hours before and six hours after kick off.

Chief magistrate Colin Beadle told Hodgson: "Your behaviour was antagonistic and provocative.

"We believe if you were removed from that situation the likelihood of disorder would be considerably reduced."

- In a separate case yesterday, Carl Simon Howat, 18, of Grey Street, Darlington, pleaded guilty to a charge of affray at the same match on March 25. He was given a three-year football banning order, a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £43 costs.

Partizan barred from UEFA Cup after violence - 26/07/2007

Source : Reuters

Partizan Belgrade have been thrown out of the UEFA Cup after crowd trouble during their first qualifying round match at Bosnian rivals Zrinjski Mostar earlier this month, the Serbian club said on Thursday.

"The UEFA Disciplinary Committee decided at Thursday's meeting in Nyon, Switzerland, to expel Partizan from European competition for a year and fine the club 50,000 Swiss francs," Partizan said on their Web site.

"The decision was based on the fact that Partizan had been punished in 25 of their 36 European matches in the last five years while UEFA made it clear recently that it would take a tougher stance on violence."

Partizan officials were not immediately available for comment on the European soccer governing body's most drastic decision against a Serbian club to date.

Partizan's punishment was later confirmed in a statement on UEFA's website (www.uefa.com) which said that the club could appeal against the verdict within three days of UEFA sending out the formal grounds for its decision.

Subject to any such appeal, UEFA confirmed that Zrinjski would now progress to the second qualifying round.

Partizan have twice been made to play their home matches at a neutral venue in European competition, one of them against Celtic in Mostar in the former Cup Winners' Cup while Bosnia was still a part of the former Yugoslavia.

Last Thursday's trouble erupted early in the first half when play was held up for 10 minutes after rival fans clashed with riot police and security stewards while pelting each other with rocks, flares and ripped-up seats.

After the game, 36 people were injured and six arrested. Police used tear gas outside the stadium to separate the home fans from departing Partizan supporters.

Partizan had been virtually assured of progressing to the second qualifying round after winning the first leg 6-1.

FC Groningen - Sheffield Wednesday - 26/07/2007

Source : Clubcall

Dutch tour ends on sour note

Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws will be glad to see the back of Holland after two players were sent off and two racially abused.
Following the laughable dismissal of Deon Burton last week, Chris Brunt was the latest player to be sent off when he was dismissed at the weekend in the draw with Groningen where Owls duo Wade Small and Leon Clarke were racially taunted by home supporters.

The Wednesday boss told the Sheffield Star: "It's an unbeaten tour but I'm just sick to the stomach at losing two players. I spoke to the referee before the game and said if there were any problems I would take players off.
"To cap it all there were racist remarks made to our players in the corner by the fans which was absolutely disgusting."

Beijing fan detained over Internet postings insulting footballers - 28/07/2007

Source: http://www.chinaview.cn

A 20-year-old Beijing football fan has received a seven-day detention for putting up Internet postings to humiliate rivals of the local club team Guo'an and trigger football hooliganism at events.

The man, surnamed Hao, will also be banned from watching live football games at all Beijing stadiums for 12 months, said Li Zhongyi, an official with Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Hao was accused of running an online chat room at Baidu.com, the most popular Internet search engine provider in China, since March to voice support of the Guo'an team but insult other teams and referees in the Beijing dialect, notorious in China as "Jing Ma", meaning Beijing swear words.

A typical Beijing swear word is abbreviated as "SB", similar in meaning to "sucker".

Hao's online chat room soon drew dozens of netizens, who put up hundreds of postings. They would team up at venues in time for major events, holding a banner to declare they belonged to the "Jing Ma club" and openly insulting referees and footballers of the rival team, said Li.

Five others were penalized for helping to organize the "Jing MaClub" and their punishment varied from warnings to fines, Li said without elaborating.

"Jing Ma" is one of the Beijing authorities' headaches, alongside pollution and congestion, in the run-up to the long-awaited Beijing Olympics set to open in a year.

"Clean up your act" is the message Beijingers have received as about 550,000 foreigners are expected for the Olympics, joined by 22,000 journalists.

"There will be 4 billion eyes on China," said Liu Qi, head of the organizing committee for the Beijing Olympics, at a pep rally earlier this week. He was referring to the expected worldwide TV audience.

"Everyone should be a good fan when watching the matches," he said. "We must be a friendly and professional audience."

FANS WARNED OVER DERBY-FOREST CLASH

Fans are being warned they could be banned from future games if they are caught misbehaving at tonight's Brian Clough Trophy match.

Derby County and Nottingham Forest are both asking fans to behave following trouble at last night's friendly game between Forest and Notts County.

Nottinghamshire police made a number of arrests when fans ran on to the Meadow Lane pitch and fights started as stewards tried to keep rival fans apart.

Both clubs will now be reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved in the violence.

This morning, a spokesman for Derby County said anyone who was proved to have caused trouble at tonight's game would face a ban.

He said: "We have our own security policy and people will be dealt with as they would at any other game."

Nottingham Forest said it would also deal with any trouble makers.

Forest chief executive Mark Arthur said: "We will be putting a statement out to our fans warning that anyone behaving badly (at Derby) will result in permanent banning orders from the City Ground."

Police on duty for tonight's match said there was nothing to suggest a repeat of the trouble that marred the Nottingham derby.

Despite a fierce rivalry between Forest and the Rams, police are hoping fans will respect the memory of managerial legend Cloughie and treat tonight's Pride Park fixture as a family night out.

The match kicks-off at 7.45pm and Sergeant Tony Rathbone said police would be able to cope with any problems.

He said: "It's a memorial match for Brian Clough and a celebration of his connections with the clubs.

"We've got no specific intelligence that anything's going to happen but it is Derby versus Forest so we are aware of the potential."

Cloughie, who died almost three years ago, led both clubs to success.

More than 20,000 fans, including about 4,500 away fans, are expected to attend the fixture between the two local rivals.

Football intelligence officer PC Allan Guy said that although the match was a friendly, extra officers would be drafted in.

He said: "We're treating it as we would a normal league game between the two sides.

"But I'd expect fans to treat this fixture as a family day out and show their respect to Brian Clough."

Police have been speaking to licensees to remind them about the keen rivalry between the two teams.

PC Guy said publicans should report gatherings of any large groups so they could be properly policed.

Fans have also been asked to allow plenty of time to get to Pride Park Stadium due to continuing roadworks around the Cockpit Island.

Fans face bans over pitch fights

Meadow Lane pitch invasion
Notts County said the trouble was an "absolute disgrace"
Two football clubs have threatened unruly supporters with life bans after trouble at a friendly game which resulted in five arrests.

Hundreds ran onto the pitch at the end of Monday's match between Notts County and Nottingham Forest at Meadow Lane.

There were fights inside the ground and violence erupted on the streets later.

Police said they deployed "every available officer" in the city while both clubs said they would look at CCTV footage to identify the offenders.

'Absolute disgrace'

Notts County chairman Jeff Moore said: "It's an absolute disgrace. I just don't know what we do to prevent such idiocy that exists in our society today."

Forest chief executive Mark Arthur added: "Any people... causing serious havoc will receive banning orders from both the City Ground and matches we play away from home.

"We do not want any behaviour like that to tarnish the good name of Nottingham Forest."

Forest won the game 2-1.

Football hooligans banned from games - 31/07/2007

Source : Lancashire Evening Post

Two football hooligans have been banned from attending football games for three years.

Mark Gilday, 23, of Glenview Close, Preston, and Kevin Booth, 18, of Bowland Road, received the bans along with a £215 fine each.

A third man, Andrew Andjelkovich, 19, of Villiers Court, Preston, was fined £215.
It follows an incident in which a group of Preston North End "supporters" attempted to attack six Birmingham fans walking along Fishergate on May 6.

The fans were heading back to Preston railway station following their team's game at Deepdale when they were approach by a group of thugs close to the junction of Butler Street.

Fortunately the Birmingham fans were being escorted by a number of police officers that were able to intervene.

Following a police investigation, which included the capturing of evidence on CCTV, the trio were all found guilty at Preston Magistrates Court of section five public order offences.
