| Football hooligans escape jail - 22/01/2006
Source : Peterborough Evening Telegraph
A GROUP of Posh supporters who got caught up in a violent clash with rival fans have been spared jail. Nine Peterborough United followers faced a judge after trouble broke out following an away victory over League Two rivals Lincoln City on September 17.
The group denied violent disorder but their guilty pleas to lesser offences were accepted by the prosecution at Lincoln Crown Court.
This Friday, Judge Michael Heath will consider imposing football banning orders on eight of the defendants.
Trouble broke out at Lincoln Central railway station an hour after the final whistle as Peterborough supporters waited for a train back to the city.
Police formed a line between fans to prevent fighting after rival supporters began chanting taunts at the Posh faithful.
But a bottle was thrown towards officers after a number of Peterborough fans tried to break through the line, the court heard.
Charges were eventually brought after the incident was captured on CCTV.
Seven of the men were ordered to carry out unpaid work, while the remaining two were fined for their lesser roles in the trouble.
Mark Barber (31), of Coronation Avenue, Whittlesey, pleaded guilty to affray after admitting throwing the bottle towards the police line.
He was given the heaviest sentence of any of the nine supporters when a judge ordered him to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work.
Stuart Eason (20), of Barford Close, Botolph Green, Peterborough, admitted a Section 4 public order offence and was given 120 hours.
Lea Jordan, of Riseholme, Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, pleaded guilty to the same offence and was also sentenced to 120 hours.
The court was told on Friday how the 21-year-old is himself a semi-professional footballer, playing for Yaxley in the United Counties League.
Brett Palmer (34), of Chapel Street, Stanground, Peterborough, also admitted a Section 4 public order offence and was given 120 hours.
Allan Patterson (27), of Candy Street, and Paul Stratton (27), of Bushy Court, Hampton Hargate, both from Peterborough, each got 150 hours for the same offence.
Darren Horn (29), of Pentland Close, Sandy, in Bedfordshire, was given 180 hours. All seven men were each also ordered to pay £200 in costs.
Kevin Horn, of Pentland Close, Sandy, Bedfordshire, and Wayne Langley, of Fletton Avenue, Fletton, Peterborough, admitted a Section 5 public order offence.
Horn (50) was fined £250 and told to pay £50 in costs, while Langley (37) was fined £50 and told to pay £30 in costs.
All the defendants apart from Langley are being considered for football banning orders.
Judge Michael Heath said: “This would have been a frightening situation. It was not the worst incident of football-related violence, but it was most unpleasant.” _________________

| Fingerprint Scans To Exclude Hooligans Start In Amsterdam Arena - 25/01/2007
Source : DPA The Amsterdam Arena launched a test programme Thursday evening to check the fingerprints of football fans with a view to excluding known troublemakers.
Spectators for the Amsterdam-Haarlem cup game in the stadium on the outskirts of Amsterdam were selected for the test, which compared their prints against a dummy database.
The biometric scans are being introduced at the home grounds of Ajax, Feyenoord and Vitesse. If the scheme works, it is to be introduced countrywide. _________________

| Tottenham handed bye into UEFA Cup 16 - 25/01/07
Source : Daily Express
Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a bye into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup after last week's expulsion of their opponents Feyenoord.
European football's governing body announced the decision on its official Web site (www.uefa.com) on Thursday.
Spurs, who are twice UEFA Cup winners, are due to face the winners of the match between struggling Serie A side Parma and Portugal's Braga in March for a place in the quarter-finals.
However, Feyenoord said on their official Web site (www.feyenoord.com) they are likely to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against their expulsion.
The Dutch club, who are have lifted the trophy twice, were thrown out of the competition by UEFA on Friday after crowd disturbances during a group stage match away to Nancy.
During the trouble on November 30, tear gas was used to control rioting Feyenoord fans who spilt on to the pitch. The match was suspended for half an hour.
HARSHER PUNISHMENT
Feyenoord had been fined 200,000 Swiss Francs (82,000 pounds) and given a suspended sentence to play two matches in an empty stadium by UEFA's independent Control and Disciplinary Board.
But UEFA called for a harsher punishment with the body's chief prosecutor appealing against the original decision.
Feyenoord's management has yet to receive the reasoning for the explusion but their inclination is to fight the ruling.
"We would like to have this ruling reviewed by a court,' said financial manager Onno Jacobs. "Based on the facts, we do not feel that we should be punished. If there has to be a punishment, it should not in our opinion be in this form.
"We have thought about cutting our losses but the predominant feeling is that the club has been wronged. We expect to be able to provide greater clarity at the end of the week, after we have closely studied the reasoning."
A CAS spokesman said a tribunal could suspend UEFA's punishment, meaning the game with Spurs would go ahead, or decide there were no grounds to delay the expulsion.
"However, if it's practical we would aim to have a verdict before the game," he added. The first leg of the round of 32 is due to take place on February 14 with the return on February 22.
A Tottenham spokesman said they would not comment on whether the club would claim compensation for lost television and gate receipts until Feyenoord had made up their mind over an appeal. _________________

| Two sections of PSG's stadium reopened under police orders - 25/01/2007Source : AP A section of Paris Saint-Germain's Parc des Princes stadium was ordered to be reopened by Paris police on Thursday. The R1 and R2 sections of the Kop of Boulogne had been shut since the shooting death of a PSG fan by a plainclothes policeman on Nov. 23. "The R1 and R2 areas will be reopened for the (Saturday's) match against Sochaux," PSG's head of communications Jean-Philippe D'Hallivillee said Thursday. "The decision was taken today by police authorities." Saturday's game will go ahead at the scheduled 8 p.m. local time. Several of PSG's previous home games were moved forward to early afternoon kickoffs for fear of violent reprisals from PSG thugs. The R1 and R2 sections were known by police to contain right-wing extremists and a hardcore hooligan element mixed into two groups called The Casual Firm and The Independents and numbering 350 to 400. PSG follower Julien Quemener was shot dead by police officer Antoine Granomort after a UEFA Cup match against Hapoel Tel Aviv. Granomort, who is black, was protecting a Jewish fan under attack from supporters shouting racist and anti-Semitic epithets. Quemener was a member of a group known as the Boulogne Boys, some of whom have links to The Independents and Casual Firm. The Boulogne Boys were among 11 official fan groups to sign a supporters charter Sunday. The charter pledges to "refuse all forms of violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and homophobia." PSG's leadership has long been accused of refusing to address racism and violence among fans. Monkey chants toward black players and racist epithets have been commonplace since far-right members started watching matches at the Kop of Boulogne 22 years ago. Supporting Paris SG is not a crime ! _________________ | |

| Liverpool: Football yobs jailed for city day of terror - 16/01/2007
Source: Liverpool Echo FOOTBALL hooligans who clashed with police after a Liverpool match were jailed for more than six years in total.
James Campbell, Lee Waldron, Andrew Madden, Stephen Quirk, Vincent Jones and Jageet Basra took part in street violence following last season's FA Cup game against Manchester United at Anfield.
Liverpool crown court heard a large-scale police operation was in force for the match on February 18, involving 250 officers and 30 police horses.
Geoffrey Lowe, prosecuting, told the court about 500 Manchester United fans were being escorted to the city centre after the lunchtime kick-off.
He said a large group of Liverpool fans gathered at Walton Road and its junction with Kirkdale Road at about 3pm after they became aware of the route being taken by the away supporters. _________________

| Police to surround court to prevent fan clashesBy staff writers and wires - 16/01/2007
Source: news.com.au
STAFF with metal detectors, private security guards and police patrols are on hand at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne today to prevent a repeat of yesterday's racial violence between fans.
Staff used hand-held metal detectors to screen fans entering the Melbourne Park complex as individual private security guards and police in small groups patrolled areas near the courts and refreshment stands.
Officers and security enforcers will surround an outside court later this afternoon when Serb Ilia Bozoljac and Croat Marin Cilic meet, amid fears of a reprisal of violent clashes seen yesterday.
Up to 150 people in national colours were thrown out on Monday after dozens of police broke up a fight between fans at the main concourse at Rod Laver Arena.
Insults were traded, bottles thrown and kicks and punches landed, as rival fans clashed, with some Serbians chanting: "Die Croatians, die."
The brawl erupted after Croat fans supporting Mario Ancic stormed out of show court 3 in response to the Serb chants.
One man, wearing a Serbian flag, said the violence would continue during the Open.
"Today it was a war that we won ... now we're coming back tomorrow," he said.
Asked if he would be returning today for the Bozoljac-Cilic match, a Croatian man said: "Yeah, we'll definitely be here."
But after the gates opened this morning, there was no sign of fans from either side of the ethnic divide anywhere near the court complex.
Tennis fans said they hoped there would be no repeat of yesterday's ugly scenes.
"It's a shame that a few individuals can try to spoil the overall friendly atmosphere at what really is a family event," said one fan from Dandenong, who did not give his name.
Tennis Australia condemned the violence - as did Serbian and Croatian community groups, but they blamed each other.
Croatian Community Association secretary Tom Starcevic said: "National pride is one thing but this is unacceptable.
"In these situations, when someone is provoked, you should hold back but some younger people are less tolerant."
Serbian Cultural Club president Toma Banjanin claimed Croatian supporters had been flaunting their colours, and said it was disappointing the bitter history between the two groups had flared at a sporting event.
"I think Croats are always overdoing things. They are always mixing politics with sport," Mr Banjanin said.
Serbian supporters claimed the Croatians started the fight, shouting insults and throwing bottles.
A tight group of Serbians and Greek supporters, calling themselves "orthodox brothers", stood on stairs leading into Garden Square.
The rival groups taunted each other before the confrontation turned into violence. Shocked tennis fans ran for cover.
A Croatian witness, too afraid to give his name, said he watched as two Croat fans surged towards Serb supporters.
"But the Serbians got him down and started pounding him with their flag," the teen said.
"They whacked and whacked him with the stick end and he was bleeding from the head."
A police tactical response unit and Richmond police quickly joined forces with uniformed and plain-clothed police and tennis security to quell the growing tide of unrest.
Croatian, Serbian and Greek fans were all kicked out.
Security footage of the incident has been handed to police, who made no arrests.
Star Croat Ancic, who was unaware of the brawl until after his match, argued his supporters were the best in the world.
"We have the best fans and they're well-known for their good supporting, correct supporting," Ancic said.
A record opening day crowd of 41,254 poured through the turnstiles after gates opened at 10am (AEDT). The previous record was 36,890. _________________

| Wolverhampton Wanderers - West Bromwich Albion - Cup - 28/01/2007Source: Express and Star Mayhem as derby fans clashWolves fans clashed with police during some of the worst football riots seen in the city in years. VIDEO: http://www.expressandstar.co.uk/video/news/070129_trouble/ Eleven officers were injured and nine hooligans arrested as bricks, bollards and road signs were thrown and gas canisters let off. Police fought running battles with hundreds of thugs as chaos descended on the city centre after the Black Country derby between Wolves and Albion in the FA Cup. Drivers were surrounded by violence in Stafford Street and bus passengers looked on as the angry mob surged past. Officers used dogs to catch yobs who tried to flip over a police vehicle near Molineux, and a number of pedestrians were injured after being caught up in the violence. About 600 officers and police support staff from across the region were brought in to police the game in an operation estimated to have cost Wolves around £20,000. Wolves fans were kept apart from Albion fans waiting to board coaches on the ring road. Wolverhampton’s most senior officer Chief Supt Richard Green said today: “Towards the end of the match some Wolves fans left early and a significant element of between 400 and 500 were intent on causing a disturbance on the ring road. “This element became frustrated at the police as they were prevented from confronting Albion fans, and their attention then turned on police officers.” Acting Supt Tony Styles denied suggestions that the policing was heavy handed. He said the aim of the day - to protect the public - had been achieved. He said: “I’m disappointed that some of the Wolves fans wanted to turn their attentions to the police officers. These were mindless people who wanted to engage in violence and disorder with the police.” He said Albion fans be-haved well and it was a minority of Wolves fans who were at the seat of the trouble. Wolves spokeswoman Lorraine Hennessy said: “Anyone who finds themselves convicted of a football related offence could be banned from Molineux.” * Eight men aged between 18 and 50 were arrested for violent disorder, public order offences, assault and criminal damage. Seven have been bailed pending further inquiries and one was released without charge. _________________ | |

| Betar Jerusalem - Bnei Sakhnin - 14/01/2007
Source: New Israel FOund
Soccer Race Riots Demonstrate Fragility of Jewish Arab Coexistence
Last week's post-match violent racist confrontation between the Jewish fans of Betar Jerusalem and the Arab supporters of Bnei Sakhnin reflected the simmering hostility between Israel 's Arabs and Jews. Hundreds of opposing fans clashed on the pitch after the game and it took 350 police more than an hour to restore order.
"The events in Sakhnin represent not only a threat to soccer but also prove how fragile is the coexistence between the different sectors of Israeli society," said Eliezer Yaari, NIF Israel Executive Director. "NIF, which has been warning of this danger for the past three years through its volunteer observers program, will intensify its educational efforts by creating a new and positive dialogue in Israeli society."
In the wake of the riots, NIF called on the Knesset's Violence in Sport committee to take action over the events in Sakhnin. NIF's volunteer observers, who record racist behavior for the weekly Racism Index that is published in the Israeli press, were able to provide the media with detailed documentation of the events in Sakhnin. YNet , Israel 's most popular Internet news site, featured an article about NIF's call for action. The public concern over the events in Sakhnin contrasts with the indifference toward racism in Israel soccer, which prevailed before NIF's New Voice in the Stadium campaign to combat the phenomenon began in 2003. _________________
