Germany : Schalke Ban Nearly 500 Dortmund Fans for 5 Years After Crowd Trouble - 21/01/2014

Source : http://bleacherreport.com

Shalke have taken the decision to ban 498 Borussia Dortmund fans from the Veltins-Arena after violence marred the Revierderby on Oct. 26.

As reported by Reuters via Yahoo! Eurosport, a portion of Dortmund fans are prohibited from entering the premises until at least 2019:

"The stadium bans are against visiting fans in the derby who on purpose cause trouble and endanger the safety of all fans, players and officials in the stadium," read a statement from Schalke.

Such a decision has been forced upon the Gelsenkirchen club after a string of recent incidents during the fiercely contested fixture.

Smoke bombs from the Dortmund end delayed kick-off last time out, while flares were also thrown from the away end and toward Schalke fans, per Raphael Honigstein of The Guardian:

"At that moment I was ashamed of our supporters," said Klopp after the final whistle. "We won despite these missiles, not because of them." The Dortmund chief executive, Hans-Joachim Watzke, spoke of "antisocial behaviour" that was "intolerable and unacceptable".

While Honigstein suggests flare-throwing is "seen as a bit of harmless fun by many of the Ultras" who take part, such activity has the capacity to put supporters in serious danger.

Prior to the aforementioned match—which Dortmund won 3-1—around 180 arrests were made, per Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN FC. Eleven were injured during fights, including eight police officers, in exchanges that saw "bottles and paint bombs" thrown toward Schalke fans.

"Both Schalke and Dortmund supporters had the highest potential for violence and aggression in years," Dortmund police director Michael Stein revealed to Ruhr Nachrichten before the match, per Uersfeld's article.

As noted in Yahoo! Eurosport's report, the decision to ban so many fans comes after Schalke supporters clashed with Cologne followers during a recent friendly match. One man was seriously injured during the incident, which doesn't help boost the profile of German football on a global scale.

The Bundesliga has received plenty of recognition across the past few years—summed up by Bayern Munich's ability to win five trophies throughout 2013, and indeed, their Champions League final clash against Dortmund—but the league's growing reputation threatens to be overshadowed if violence persists.

While it is almost certainly the minority spoiling proceedings, it will be interesting to see whether Schalke's banning measures eradicate repeat offences during the side's next tie with Dortmund on March 25.

The extreme measures should be seen as a necessary, if disappointing, response to a climate that could potentially result in death if no action is taken.

Football hooligan sacked from job with Edinburgh City Council over train station riot - 21/01/2014

Source : http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/

GERALD McCANN was jailed last year for his part in the huge battle at Glasgow Central Station and has since lost his job as a street cleaner.

A THUG has been sacked from his job as a street cleaner after he was jailed for taking part in a football riot at a busy station.

Edinburgh City Council worker Gerald McCann was locked up for his role at the centre of last March’s pre-planned battle at Glasgow Central station.

About 70 hooligans, made up of Hibs and Rangers thugs and members of the Chelsea Headhunters gang, fought in front of terrified families. One man had part of his ear bitten off.

The Record revealed McCann, 46, was freed on an electronic tag before Christmas, eight weeks into a nine-month sentence.

Yesterday, a council spokeswoman confirmed he had been fired but refused to comment further.

A source said: “He got what he deserved.”

Burnley - Sheffield Wednesday - 19/01/2014

Source : local press

Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday fans in bar brawl

AN investigation is underway after trouble flared between Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday fans after yesterday’s game.

Supporters clashed inside Burnley Miners’ Club, at around 6pm, after the two clubs fought out a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.

Today, Lancashire Police said no arrests had been made as a result of the violence at the Plumbe Street venue, where a window was smashed during the confrontation.

Away fans have claimed that one of their number was left with a serious leg injury but this could not be confirmed by the emergency services.

Rival fans have blamed each other for initially starting the trouble, which saw several officers covering the Championship game diverted along Harry Potts Way and Yorkshire Street.

The venue’s staff confirmed that a ‘fracas’ did take place inside the club but no officials were available for comment today.

Inspector Duncan Arthur, of Burnley Police, said: “Police attended an incident involving Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley fans, but no arrests have been made as yet.

“I don’t know how many people were involved but there was some damage to the inside of the club.

“It happened in the early evening, just after 6pm.”

Another outbreak of violence was reported at the junction of Centenary Way and Yorkshire Street and a flare was said to have been let off near the Croft Street bus station.

England : 21 football fans jailed for total of 19 years - 21/01/2014

Source : http://www.itv.com

21 men have been jailed for a total of 19 years and six weeks at Warwick Crown Court today, after pleading guilty to violent disorder in a football-related incident.

On the morning of Saturday 16 March 2013, fans attending the Blue Square Premier League match between Nuneaton Town and Lincoln City at Sperrin Brewery Stadium, clashed with Police prior to kick-off.

Both sets of supporters were given the opportunity for safe escort to the ground.

The vast majority of Nuneaton fans declined and after attempting to engage violently with away supporters, they turned their aggression on Police.

England : Five Crystal Palace fans jailed after King's Cross brawl with Brighton supporters - 21/01/2014

Source : http://www.croydonadvertiser.co.uk

FIVE Crystal Palace supporters were jailed today (Tuesday) for their part in a violent brawl with Brighton fans near King’s Cross Station.

The five men, who were all given six-year banning orders from football grounds, were involved in a “terrifying” fight on November 10 2012 after the Eagles’ away match with Peterborough.

The group, who were convicted in December following a trial at Blackfriars Crown Court, were sentenced today at the same court.

Hayden Johnson, 20, of Jesmond Road, Addiscombe, was given 10 months in a young offender’s institute, while three others received 10-month jail sentences.

They are; Dean Kirby, 29, of West Park Road, Newchapel; Declan Clarke, 22, of Miles Road, Epsom; and Adam Marshall, 23, of Aston Way, Epsom.

James Hackett, 21, of Norbury Avenue, Thornton Heath, was given a reduced sentence of eight months because he had earlier changed his plea to guilty, to a charge of violent disorder.

During the trial, jurors had heard how punches, glasses and sandwich boards were thrown as the brawl escalated in Caledonian Road.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Henry Blacksell QC said he could understand why the jury had rejected the evidence of those who had pleaded not guilty.

He said: “I like to think you all know and realise it makes it much harder to take into account any true remorse.”

He later added: “You should be ashamed. It could have been members of your family.”

Judge Blacksell QC, did, however, say he thought Hackett had shown some genuine remorse.

During the trial, the court heard how Hackett, 21, could be seen “jumping up and down in a victory pose, throwing glasses and having a fierce face-to-face confrontation”.

In his submission, Hackett’s defence lawyer, Jonathan Simpson, said: “He had a surge of strength and responsibility in the presence of all those who are his friends to stand up and be accountable.”

Johnson and Clarke were also given three-month sentences suspended for two years, in November, for their part in an earlier fight with in Peterborough town centre with rival fans on the same day as the King’s Cross incident.

Rakhesh Sharma, Johnson’s defence lawyer, said it had been a “day of madness”, something which the judge also rejected, adding there should have been time for the Palace fans to regain their heads on the journey home.

Forrester has pleaded guilty to affray, while Clewlow has admitted a Section 4 public order offence.

Scotland : Dunfermline fan guilty of inciting violence before derby with Raith Rovers - 21/01/2014

Source : http://www.thecourier.co.uk

A 20-year-old Dunfermline Athletic fan has been convicted of inciting rival fans before a derby match against Raith Rovers.

Pars fan Stephen Payne, of Admiralty Road, Rosyth, was part of a group of Dunfermline supporters who attempted to square up to their Raith Rovers counterparts before a match in November 2012.

Only a cordon of police officers lined across the breadth of Kirkcaldy’s Links Street, which leads down to Raith Rovers stadium, Starks Park, prevented the two sets of supporters from clashing.

At Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Monday, Sheriff Max Hendry was shown camera footage taken by police officers on the day of the game.

FoCUS — the Football Coordination Unit for Scotland, which deals with specialistfootball crimes — had monitored supporters’ movements and behaviour via bodycams and handheld camcorders on the way to the match.

Payne, who had denied the charge, was spotted among a crowd of Dunfermline supporters making their way to the Scottish Division One match, eventually won 3-1 by Dunfermline.

The camera showed footage of rival supporters baying at each other on either side of a 15-strong police line in Links Street.

Payne was seen approaching and trying to push his way through the cordon while making gestures at the Raith fans.

Officers, armed with batons in the air, pushed him back and shouted for him to retreat before Payne swiped away an officer with his right arm.

He then strode menacingly along the police line while officers told him to keep his distance.

PC Derek Skene told the court that trouble was anticipated due to the heated rivalry between the two clubs.

He described the atmosphere in Links Street as “volatile” and noted the accused was acting aggressively, using foul language and gesturing to the other fans.

Payne was found guilty of, on November 17 2012, at Links Street, Kirkcaldy, while on the way to a regulated football match, engaging in behaviour likely to incite public disorder by forming part of a disorderly crowd and acting in an aggressive manner towards rival football fans.

Sheriff Hendry deferred sentence.

England : Police Tyne-Wear derby warning: Yobs jailed for total of 45 years after April's riots - 21/01/2014

Source : http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk

Northumbria Police have today warned football fans that disorder on derby day could land them in jail

Yobs involved in last year’s derby day disorder have now been jailed for a total of more than 45 years.

And police are today warning football fans that the type of rioting seen after April’s match will not tolerated.

There were ugly scenes in Newcastle city centre as supposed Newcastle United fans clashed with police following their team’s 3-0 defeat to local rivals Sunderland at St James’ Park

A huge police operation was launched the next day and so far 76 people have been dealt with by the courts.

Forty five of the main offenders have been jailed from between four months and 21 months.

While others, including juveniles and first time offenders - have been sentenced to community orders for their role in the disorder.

All of those sentenced by the courts have also been given football banning orders of up to six years, ensuring they will not be attending football matches for several seasons.

Out of the 156 arrested, 57 said they had been to the match and 33 were season ticket holders.

Northumbria Police Assistant Chief Constable Jo Farrell said: “This was very much football-related disorder, the worst in the country last season, and no-one wants to see a repeat of those scenes.

“I’d like to reassure people that the disorder which happened after last season’s fixture was unusual and we took swift and decisive enforcement action to ensure those suspected of being involved were progressed through the courts.

“Public safety is our priority and this enforcement action has resulted in a number of prison sentences and banning orders, ensuring those involved are not at next month’s fixture.

“We know from interviews and court hearings that some of those involved did not set out to cause trouble and many of the younger offenders were first or second time offenders who had not been in trouble with police previously.

“I’d urge people to think about their actions and the impact this could have on their lives, their community and the city in which they live.

“This disorder was in no way reflective of the people who live in the Northumbria Police area or of North East football supporters, who want nothing more than to support their team in a safe and enjoyable environment.

“We always put safety first and with this at the forefront of our minds we’re working closely with both football clubs and other partner agencies to prevent a minority from putting the safety of others at risk.”

In total 93 people were charged with offences following the derby in April, with 17 cases still being progressed through the courts.

Huyton man detained over stabbing of Oldham fan at FA Cup tie

welve people were arrested in early morning raids to tackle football hooliganism.

Police carried out synchronised raids on homes of 10 Liverpool FC supporters officers believe to have been involved in a pub brawl after a Liverpool home game in December.

Nine males, three aged 17, two aged 18, two aged 19, a 22-year-old and a 25-year-old, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and a woman on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

A 24-year-old man at a property on Lyme Cross Road in Huyton, was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and on suspicion of section 18 wounding after an Oldham Athletic fan was stabbed after a match at Anfield earlier this month.

A woman was arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply and a man was held on suspicion of possessing a prohibited article after what was believed to be a CS gas canister was found at his address.

Chief Superintendent Jon Ward, area commander for north Liverpool, said the force was cracking down on football-related violence ahead of next Tuesday's derby.

He said: "We have seen disorder creeping into some fixtures and it is not going to be accepted.

"I am not going to use the term fans because these are not genuine football fans."

Police made arrests in Maghull, Bootle, Kirkby, Wallasey and Old Swan.

The arrests follow an incident in McHales bar on Lime Street after the Liverpool match against West Ham on December 7.

Chief superintendent Ward said the brawl had broken out between a group of Liverpool supporters and a group of Everton fans who had returned from a concert in Manchester.

He added: "What we do know is that the violence and trouble these people cause is organised and they get together intent on causing disorder.
