Up to 100 Wolves fans fought on the streets of Belgium ahead of a friendly pre-season match, before being separated by police on horseback and sprayed by a water cannon.
Trouble flared before the friendly game between Wolves and Charleroi in the Belgian city on Saturday night.
Police said the fighting was pre-arranged with counterparts from the Belgian side before the match, which Wolves won 2-1.
The trouble involved around 100 of the 300 Wolves fans who travelled to Belgium for the game. No arrests were made.
Three flares were also thrown from the end of the ground where the Wolves fans were massed during the second half.
Py Hendricks, the general secretary of Charleroi, confirmed there had been trouble between the two sets of fans before the game.
He said: “There was trouble in the city centre when 100 supporters from Wolves came by train. They arranged to meet fans from Belgium. The fighting was arranged.
“There was a small fight but the police were there immediately and they dispersed them with a water cannon and then they escorted them to the stadium.
“There were no arrests made.”
Sources say trouble had been planned for several days, with rumours circulating at the friendly against Walsall six days ago that known Wolves thugs were preparing to descend on Charleroi. A Wolves fan caught up in the trouble who didn’t want to be named said: “I saw fans fighting but it was all over in seconds.
“As the Wolves fans walked up, the police came running out of the side streets.
“Police horses came in and there was a water cannon which sprayed everyone.”
Belgian fans goaded genuine Wolves supporters before the game when they unfurled their St Georges flags to have their pictures taken by the Express & Star in the city’s main square.
Chants of “Charleroi hooligans, Charleroi hooligans” went up around the square.
There were also unconfirmed reports that fighting continued after Saturday’s game.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: “We would take a very dim view of any of our fans identified causing trouble.

Two english lads are seen and followed by 2 locals. Punches were exchanged and English retreated.
Then we knew that the Wolves firm is on its way to our pub. Tension is high especially due to our small number but everyone is well up for it.
Wolves arrvived (+-100) at the street corned. Locals charged and police quickly intervened and both sides are separated by a water-canon, cavalery etc. Some bottles were exchanged, like punches. Both sides tried to pass through police lines. Police charged on english side. They took the parallel street and locals directly arrived in front of them, joined by normal fans. Only a dozen of lads pass through the police and fought with equal number of Wolves, who retreated. Police intervened with cavalery. Situation remained calm.
Several skirmishes during the night.

Doors shut on PSG friendly over hooligan fears - 16/07/2010
Source : Eurosport
Paris St Germain's friendly with FC Malines will be played behind closed doors after local authorities refused to sanction the game due to fears over hooliganism.
PSG were due to play the Belgian first division team in the vicinity of their training centre near the Northern French towns of Arras and Le Touquet - a posh resort - but their notorious competing hooligan 'firms' led the towns to block the game.
It will now be played in the training centre.
"After consulting with the director of the regional police, we made the decision due to the poor reputation of PSG’s fans," Le Touquet’s mayor Daniel Fasquelle said.
"We blocked this match due to the potential dangers it could pose, particularly with the limited facilities at our stadium."
Fans will however be able to watch the match after French broadcaster Canal+ Sport offered to show it.

Two fans in court after fights and flair incident at Celtic friendly with Lincoln City - 27/07/2010
Source : dailyrecord.co.uk
A CELTIC fan was hit by a flare as she watched the Hoops play Lincoln City in a pre-season friendly.
The incident was one of several flashpoints during and after the match, which resulted in 20 arrests.
Two Scots fans, Stuart Stanley, 32, of Uddingston, Lanarkshire, and Ada m Pollock, 24, of Pollok, Glasgow, were held in custody over the weekend.
They were charged with fighting in the street and freed on bail yesterday.
Both will appear at Lincoln magistrates court on August 17.
Five fans, including the girl, were injured as a result of the violence. All went to hospital but were released after treatment.
Local police said a St George's flag was set on fire outside the Golden Cross pub before the match and tensions were heightened by pro-IRA chants.
A smoke grenade was set off.
After the game, which Celtic won 4-1, there were a number of fights involving rival fans.
Of the 20 arrests, 12 were locals and eight were visiting supporters.
More than 1000 Celtic fans travelled south for the match at the Sincil Bank Stadium on Saturday.
Football intelligence officer PC Andy Pearson said: "There was some disorder at the Golden Cross pub and some after the match.
"A lot of that came from the inflammatory nature of the songs from Celtic fans. Many of the incidents were fuelled by alcohol.
"We will be seeking banning orders for those arrested."
Before the match, police had to deal with a fight between two Celtic supporters in the city and a separate brawl in the away end of the ground.
During the game, a number of flares and smoke canisters were set off in the stadium.
There were further problems outside the Golden Cross where five of the arrests were made.
Af terwards officers were called to several fights on the lower end of the High Street where rival supporters clashed.
Lincoln City, who are in England's League Two, are managed by ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton.

German hooligans hospitalise pub-goers - 27/07/2010

German football hooligans face charges after attacking pub-goers in Carinthia last night (Mon).
Police in the town of Tröpolach said today the six 1. FC Köln (Cologne) supporters hurled beer glasses, tables and chairs at locals. Witnesses said the attack occurred without an apparent reason. Four people had to be hospitalised in Villach.
Officials said a chief librarian is among the attackers who now face violence charges.
This incident follows brutal rows involving fans of the German Bundesliga team – who are in Hermagor for a pre-season training camp until tomorrow – in discos and bars in other towns in the province on the weekend.
Around 150 supporters are currently in the province with their favourite team. Local police stressed that only a small number in the group were responsible for the violent incidents.

Norwich City fans arrested after Leeds unrest - 29/07/2010
Source : Norwich Evening News
Eight Norwich City fans have been arrested on suspicion of football hooliganism following unrest after a match against Leeds United earlier this year, police confirmed today.
Norfolk police said that the men had all voluntarily handed themselves in at Bethel Street police station this week after being contacted by the force's specialist operations teams.
The arrests follow a long-running operation to identify those involved in the trouble. It is believed they were identified from CCTV footage taken after the game in March this year.
Following questioning, they have all been charged with offences, ranging from assault to public order breaches and obstructing highways and will appear before magistrates at a later date. Officers are continuing their investigations into other people involved in the trouble. However, both Norfolk and West Yorkshire Police said no Leeds fans have been arrested so far.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Norfolk police have not requested our assistance in this matter.”
Norfolk police came under fire following the top-of-the-table clash, which the Canaries won 1-0 after a last minute goal, when fans complained about the behaviour of Leeds supporters.
Officers said there were “sporadic skirmishes” before and after the match, but fans complained that Leeds fans had been let out of the stadium without a police escort while Norwich fans were still leaving the ground.
They told the Evening News that there had been a number of confrontations as fans from Yorkshire “picked off” those following the Canaries. Several arrests were made at the time.
Police were also called to Dereham to deal with “rowdy behaviour” after 200 Leeds fans arrived in the town before the match with one coach breaking down nearby.
Many congregated in and around the Red Lion pub on Quebec Street where officers were sent as a precaution in case of any trouble but no arrests were made.
Supt Jim Smerdon said he thought the police response had been up to the challenge but admitted: “It's fair to say that the game attracted factions from both clubs that we don't want to see at football matches.”
Last year nine Canaries supporters were jailed after going on a rampage in Leicester following a heavy away defeat in February 2008. Leicester Crown Court heard how a gang of 13 City fans hurled missiles bricks concrete blocks and chairs after the match. Two Leicester City fans were also jailed for their part in the violence.

Sheffield Wednesday's most famous fan has been left "confused and baffled" after being banned from a pre-season friendly by Barnsley FC. Paul Gregory - better known to Wednesday fans as 'Tango Man' - is famous for taking his shirt off at games and starting Wednesday chants.
The 47-year-old transport manager said: "I've never been in any trouble with police at games and get on really well with all stewards.
"I've received texts from Barnsley fans this week saying they can't wait to see me - I just can't believe it."
Barnsley FC's safety officer made the decision to ban Mr Gregory from Oakwell Stadium for tonight's pre-season friendly between Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday.
Barnsley FC general manager Don Rowing said: "He has attended the ground on a number of occasions and has failed to respond to requests made by stewards about ground regulations.
"He takes his shirt off which is not something we condone and also encourages other supporters to misbehave."
He added: "We don't want other people who have paid good money to see the game subjected to that."
Mr Gregory, aged 47, has had a season ticket at Hillsborough since 1979 and attends every game, home and away, despite living in Oxley, Wolverhampton.
He said: "To be told just days before the match, after I booked half a day of work and paid for the ticket, is devastating.
"I'm being branded a hooligan by them, but I just go to enjoy the football. I'm totally confused about why they have banned me.
"I don't go on holidays or anything like that, I go to watch Wednesday instead. That's my passion."
South Yorkshire Police, who delivered the news about the ban on behalf of Barnsley FC, said they had no problem with Mr Gregory.
PC Tom Carr, from South Yorkshire Police football intelligence unit, said: "We see Mr Gregory at games a lot but don't see him as a threat.
"He is just an extremely enthusiastic football fan."
John Gath, chairman of the Wednesdayite supporters' club, also had words of support for Mr Gregory.
He said: "It's a bit disappointing to see this kind of action for a friendly.
"He's completely harmless and just gets the atmosphere going in a positive way."
Mr Gregory is known as 'Tango Man' or 'Tango' due to his similarity to a character who appeared in an advert for the fizzy drink. He has his own Wikipedia entry and even has a fan page on myspace with famous myspace friends such as Sheffield band Reverend and Makers and former Wednesday midfielder Glenn Whelan.
He shot to national fame in the 1990s with an appearance on The Big Breakfast.
Mr Rowing said: "Whilst I'm at this football club his attendance will be reviewed on a game-by-game basis."

Brazil cracks down on fan violence in football stadiums - 28/07/2010
Source : The Associated Press (CP)
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has signed a law aimed at curbing fan violence in soccer stadiums.
The law signed Tuesday includes fines and prison terms of up to two years for anyone involved in acts of violence inside the stadium or within a radius of up to five kilometres from the venue.
It also makes ticket-scalping a crime.
Stadiums with seating capacities of more than 10,000 will have to install cameras to monitor fan groups that often clash after the games.
A recent study shows that more than 40 people were killed in connection to Brazilian football matches between 1999 and 2009.

Brazil: Goias - Vitoria - 22/07/2010
Source: The Canadian Press
Coach Leao, 3 players taken to police station after brawl with reporters in Brazil
Former Brazil football coach Emerson Leao and three of his Goias club players were taken to a police station for interrogation after a confrontation with reporters in a Brazilian league match.
Leao and the players were not arrested, but authorities said they will face a criminal process for their role in the brawl after Goias' 2-2 draw with Vitoria on Wednesday in Salvador.
Television images showed Leao arguing with a radio reporter and then shoving him out of the way. Striker Rafael Moura later was seen throwing a hard punch at the reporter, sending him to the ground.
Other players and reporters got involved as Vitoria fans cheered loudly from the stands, and police had to intervene quickly to keep the altercation from escalating. Goias team directors and security guards also were in the melee
The altercation apparently began because Leao was upset with the refereeing and didn't want to be interviewed after the match. Goias was leading 2-0 before allowing Vitoria to rally and equalize near the end.
Leao was heard complaining that the reporter, Roque Santos, was "putting the microphone to my mouth." He then raised his finger near the reporter's face before pushing him away.
Santos was upset, and some players came to help separate the two. But others went after the journalist, throwing punches and trying to kick him. Moura ran at full speed toward Santos and struck him with a powerful right-handed punch.
Leao also later tried to go after Santos but was not able to get near him.
Santos also went to the police station to talk to authorities after the match.
He told other local media that he just went to interview the coach to ask what happened to his team.
"They started to hit me, they are cowards," Santos was quoted as saying by another radio station.
Santos said he plans to sue Leao, Moura and the other two Goias players allegedly involved, midfielder Romerito and striker Marcao. Moura reportedly later tried to apologize to Santos for punching him.
Leao did not talk to other reporters after the brawl.
Goias president Syd de Oliveira accused local media of "provoking" Leao and his players.
"Everyone saw that the reporter struck Leao with the microphone when the coach was trying to talk to the referee," Oliveira told local media.
Leao, a former Brazil goalkeeper who coached the national team in 2002, is known for his temper on and off the field. He often got into altercations with fans, team directors and the media throughout his coaching career. In 2008, he was attacked and beaten by a group men connected to his former team Santos when he visited the club.

Police hunt more Cardiff fans over FA Cup violence - 29/07/2010
Source : walesonline.co.uk
Police have released 11 images of Cardiff City fans they want to speak to following football violence in February.
The appeal comes after over 50 fans were hunted by the Met in a large scale appeal when the Cardiff-Chelsea FA Cup tie turned nasty.
Over 200 people took part in a fight after the game on the Kings Road with missiles including road cones and bricks being thrown.
During the incident a number of police officers were injured with one male PC sustaining a facial injury that required surgery.
Detective Superintendent William Lyle of Hammersmith and Fulham Borough said: "Thanks to the public’s response to previous appeals we have identified 20 fans involved in this large-scale disorder. Our appeals continue as there are further people we need to identify.
"Over 40,000 law abiding fans' attended this event to support their teams and enjoy a day of good football. Unfortunately they saw a brief glimpse of the type of violence we have worked hard to prevent in recent years.
“We are committed to keeping football a safe environment where people are able to take their families without fear of violence."
On the morning of the match over 100 Chelsea supporters gathered in the West Brompton area and several clashes took place as Cardiff fans arrived at the ground.
The Police had to let off smoke bombs to stop the fighting.
Following the violence 51 people have been charged with various offences from affray, violent disorder and GBH under the Public Order Act. All have been bailed to appear before West London Magistrates' Court from the beginning of August onwards.
In total 26 Cardiff fans are still wanted by Police in connection with violence on the day.

8.25pm - Troubles between Montpellier and Gyor supporters
Skirsmishes erupted tonight, opposing Montpellier and Gyor supporters inside the stadium, about 20 minutes before kick-off. About 50 supporters from both sides exchanged missiles.
