KV Kortrijk - SV Zulte-Waregem - Cup - 12/01/2008

Source: mail (thanks to the sender)

At the end of the match one of the Kortrijk fans was spotted (and filmed by federal police) 'breaking the law'. When police tried to arrest him he was supported by the Kortrijk lads, pepperspray was used by the cops. After some minutes extra police forces came and forced about 50 Kortrijk lads back on to a football pitch close to the stadium, where they went mental agains the police. Belts were used, little football goals were thrown into the police. About eight injured fans (one bitten by a dog), 6 cops injured. Already three arrests, many more will follow due to the use of fireworks during the match and the fights during/after the match against stewards/police. Also at least one Waregem fan got a stadium ban of several months, no reason given.

Morocco: More than 50 youths arrested in fresh upsurge of football hooliganism - 14/01/2008

Source : Panapress

The Moroccan authorities a rrested more than 50 youths on Sunday as police clamped down on an unprecedented upsurge in hooliganism, vandalism and violence in stadiums in the north African kingdom.

Thirty-seven teenagers were arrested after acts of vandalism on Sunday at the Mohammed V Stadium at the end of the league match between Raja and Meknes, which Raja won 2-0, the local media reported.

The reports said hooligans in Casablanca destroyed six vehicles and those arrested would be prosecuted.

Acts of vandalism were also committed at the Moulay Abdellah stadium in Rabat after FAR Rabat beat KAC Kenitra 2-0.

Police said 15 young people were arrested for destroying seats of the stands, as well as vehicles.

Drastic measures were taken to control riots after violence punctuated the Cup of the Throne match between Raja and Wydad of Casablanca on 20 October last year.

In addition to severe penalties against the clubs, unaccompanied minors are now denied access to stadiums, cameras have been installed, the number of policemen has been increased inside and outside the stadiums and cases of violence are referred to the court.

The Casablanca court sentenced 11 people to between one month and five months' imprisonment, with fines of 100 Euros after the violence during the 20 October match.

Hooligans locked up after city fight - 14/01/2008

Source : Hereford Times

FIVE men have been locked up and given football banning orders after a street punch-up that followed a Hereford United game.

Anthony Bird, Sam Mulvey, Daniel Hall, Robert Downing and Anthony Calandra - all from Herefordshire - were part of a gang that attacked 20-year-old Shrewsbury Town fan Benjamin Hayman in St Owen Street following a match on April 28 last year.

They were sent to prison or young offenders institutes for between four and nine months, and banned from football grounds for between six and ten years after pleading guilty to violent disorder.

advertisementJudge John Cavell said the group indulged in gratuitous violence on other supporters'.

He sentenced Bird, aged 23 from Prior Street to nine months in prison; Mulvey, aged 19 from Bargates, Leominster to six months in a young offenders institute; Hall, aged 21 from Hinton Avenue, Hereford, to six months in prison; Downing, aged 20 from Sunningdale, Leominster, to four months in a young offenders institute; and Calandra, aged 30 from Ledbury Road, Hereford to nine months in prison.

Calandra was given a ten year football banning order preventing him from going near Edgar Street on Hereford United home match days, and within a 10 mile radius of an away ground where Hereford United may be playing.

The other four received six year banning orders. The Judge said Calandra's ban was longer because of his two previous convictions for football related disorder.

FOOTBALL YOB BANNED - 15/01/2008

Source : thisisgloucestershire.co.uk

Teenage football fan Aaron Cawley has been banned from every football ground in the country after he was caught at the centre of 200-strong riot.

The youth, from Hester's Way, now 16, was caught on CCTV in the middle of a violent pitch invasion at Leeds last season after Leeds were sent crashing into Division One by Ipswich Town.

Cawley says he isn't a hooligan and was just caught up in the crowd.

But Judge Peter Collier banned him from every professional football match in the country for three years and ordered him to complete four behaviour workshops and 20 hours of community service.

He must be at least a mile away from any stadium during a football match, and three miles from Elland Road in Leeds.

He will also have his passport confiscated every time England plays abroad.

Cawley was the youngest of the 13 hooligans in the dock at Leeds Crown Court facing charges of affray following the riot in April last year.

One of his co-accused was jailed for six months and two others were given four months each.

Fans of Ipswich Town told the court they "feared for their life" as they came face to face with the mob.

As well as the torrent of verbal abuse, many were pelted with coins, lighters and bottles while police fought to contain the gang.

Several disabled supporters were left stranded in their wheelchairs, metres from the frontline of yobs.

But in an exclusive interview with the Echo, the former Bournside School pupil denied he was a hooligan, saying he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"I'd never invaded a match before. I got caught up in the tension and emotion of it all and ran onto the pitch as a show of solidarity with the other fans," he said.

"Some people were looking for a fight but I didn't want anything like that. All I was doing was shouting Leeds songs at the Ipswich fans because they had been taunting us earlier.

"There were about 200 of us, and I was just unlucky to have been singled out.

"I had no idea there were disabled supporters there, and I feel really bad for them. My attention was always on the Ipswich fans in the stands. Straight after it all me and my brother Mike went to the station and caught the train home.

"We didn't even stay to see the final 33 seconds of the game, we didn't want to get caught up in trouble afterwards.

"I regret running onto the pitch and feel ashamed for what happened with the disabled people, but I'm not a hooligan.

"I never intended to cause any violence that day. And I certainly wouldn't have ever put a disabled fan in danger.

"I was just caught up in the whole thing and now I'm paying the price."

After the riot, police circulated pictures of the offending Leeds fans in the media, at football grounds and on internet fan sites. Cawley, now 16, was recognised and arrested.

The teenager, who is studying computing at Gloucestershire College in Cheltenham, lives at in Hester's Way with his family.

His brother Mike, 18, was in a different stand and did not get caught up in the pitch invasion.

"Real hooligans come in groups ready for fighting, throwing punches and using weapons," he said.

"My brother just got caught up in the passion, but all he did was sing songs. He's not a thug."

Tennis: Police pepper-spray fans at Aussie Open - 15/01/2008

Source : ThisisLondon

Police made five arrests and pepper-sprayed tennis fans at the Australian Open today as crowd trouble erupted for the second successive year at Melbourne Park.

A large contingent of Greek supporters had gathered at the Margaret Court Arena for the first-round match between seventh seed Fernando Gonzalez and Greek qualifier Konstantino Economidis.

The Chilean won in straight sets but the match was halted for five minutes when police decided to take action following boisterous chanting by fans.

A small number of spectators are alleged to have reacted to the police presence and officers pepper-sprayed three fans, one of whom was sick and needed medical treatment.

The five fans arrested during the disturbance were taken away from the tournament grounds and banned from returning for 24 hours.

Economidis said: "It really is sad that this happened."

Stephen Butterick, a BBC Radio producer, said: "It was upsetting, I've never seen anything like it at a tennis match. The whole atmosphere had been like a Davis Cup match crossed with a football match."

Last year, there was a pitched battle between Croatian and Serbian supporters at the championships, which saw 150 fans ejected.

Tensions between Croat and Serb fans have been evident in recent years following the Balkan conflicts but Greek fans - Melbourne has a large ex-pat population - have never previously been involved in trouble.

Greek fans at the court claimed they had only been chanting when the police released the pepper spray which caused panic among spectators, including families with children.

A police spokesman said: "Complaints were made to the police after a group of fans started offensive chants during the match.

"As police tried to remove one man, others in the crowd became aggressive and threatening. Fearing for their safety, the police officers deployed pepper spray."

Greek fan killed after cup match - 17/01/2008

Source: BBC

A football supporter has been fatally stabbed and another wounded near Athens after a game between Greece's two biggest clubs.
Reports say the two Olympiakos fans had been celebrating a 4-0 cup victory over local rival club Panathinaikos.

Police say they had argued with a group of youths in a cafe and were stabbed during a fight outside.

Media reports put the argument down to rivalry between the two groups of fans but police could not confirm a motive.

Three people were arrested and are due to appear in court on Thursday.

Police later said that the man who died had been handed a two-year ban on attending football matches in 2005.

Match ban

The stabbing is the latest in a series of violent incidents involving Greek football fans.

In March 2007, a Panathinaikos supporter died during a clash between fans of the two teams before a women's volleyball match.

That led to a suspension of all professional team sports in Greece for a fortnight.

Five days earlier, fireworks and missiles were thrown during an international match against Turkey, prompting European football's governing body Uefa to insist that Greece's next two games were held outside Athens.

Israël: Vandals set fire to IFA offices - 17/01/2008

Source: http://www.jpost.com

Israeli soccer was plunged into a new crisis on Wednesday, when it was discovered that during the early hours of the morning vandals, apparently connected with Betar Jerusalem soccer club, had smashed the windows of the Israel Football Association's offices and set the reception area on fire.

The perpetrators also daubed graffiti on the walls of the IFA offices, which are located at the National Stadium in Ramat Gan, with messages for Avi Luzon, chairman of the IFA, saying "Avi Luzon should die" and "We will kill you." The intruders identified themselves by smearing "Betar Jerusalem", the symbol of a menorah and the initials "L.F." across the walls.

"L.F." is known to stand for "La Familia," the Betar Jerusalem supporters association, which is quickly gaining a reputation for extremism and violence. Later on Wednesday, Israeli sports Web site www.One.co.il reported that leaders of "La Familia" had denied any involvement in the incident.

Fire crews managed to put out the flames early on, thus avoiding large scale damage. But the walls of the reception area were clearly blackened by the smoke and, among other things, plant pots were destroyed.

There has been a massive escalation in tension between Betar and the IFA in recent weeks after the soccer association decided to punish the club for curses chanted by Betar fans, slurring the Prophet Muhammed, directed at supporters of Arab team Bnei Sakhnin during the Toto Cup semifinals in December.

The IFA forced the club to play last Saturday's Israeli Premier League game against Sakhnin behind closed doors, a match which Sakhnin went on to win 1-0. Betar president Arkadi Gaydamak reacted angrily to the punishment, claiming that the IFA was an "embarrassment" and accused them of being responsible for provoking the fans.

On Monday, however, Gaydamak released a letter written directly to the fans saying Jews and Arabs should live together in Israel in peace and that any battles should be constrained to the soccer pitch.

On Wednesday Gaydamak reacted to the intrusion by holding a press conference in Tel Aviv in which he threatened to quit the club if the violence continues.

"I do not know what happened tonight in the premises of the Israel Football Association [or] by whom it was done," said Gaydamak. "But if it continues... and if it is discovered that they were Betar supporters, because their actions were very, very grave, I will be obliged to stop my activity as owner of Betar football club and... also stop providing financial support to Betar... because in our country this kind of action can have very serious consequences."

"I ask all Betar fans to stop expressing slogans cursing the IFA," he said. "Those fans who express their protests in an aggressive manner should realize the seriousness of their actions. [They] are withdrawing their right to be part of Betar Jerusalem Football Club and we do not want their financial support. I condemn all the violent acts that were perpetrated."

The Russian billionaire also repeated his blame of the IFA, saying "they use their position to create some kind of moral and political authority."

The police have now launched an investigation into the vandalism, and a special investigative team has been set up to deal with the incident.

Israel Police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said: "We believe the motive behind the fire was arson, in that those responsible intended to set the reception area on fire. An investigation has been launched and as yet no suspects have been arrested."

The incident was immediately condemned by Betar chairman Eli Arazi and spokesman Oded Zargari.

In a statement released by the club, Arazi said: "I and the Betar management condemn these acts in the strongest terms and we will do our best to ensure that these people will not continue to be part of the club. We will do everything we can to help the police to find the people who did this. These are the people who give Betar a bad name. We do not accept any type of violence in connection with sport. We do not find these acts at all acceptable."

Arazi himself has also been a vocal critic of the IFA, most recently on Wednesday last week, when Betar's appeal against the IFA's decision to punish the club was rejected. Arazi was seen shouting at the IFA judges in the court.

The IFA, meanwhile, set up an impromptu press conference at its offices on Wednesday morning to address the issue. The CEO Uri Shilo called the incident an act of "barbarism."

The vandalism was perpetrated on the same day that a FIFA representative was due to arrive in the country for a three-day visit.

Deputy PM worried about Australia's image after tennis fracas - 17/01/2008

Source: AFP

Moves including banning full strength beer are being considered to prevent further ugly scenes at the Australian Open after a senior minister said Thursday the country's image was at stake.

The event, once synonymous with a relaxed day in the sun for families, has been rocked by the unprecedented use of pepper spray by police to subdue rowdy fans on Tuesday, with the images beamed around the world.

It followed ethnic clashes last year, with alcohol playing a part both times.

Deputy prime minister Julia Gillard said the scenes being seen globally were a concern.

"Of course I was concerned about it, it's not a great image for the world and that coverage has gone around the world," Gillard told ABC radio.

"It's obviously concerning that individuals in the crowd who say that they were completely uninvolved in the incident ended up affected by the spray.

"Having said that I've also seen the police reports that they did feel that they were under threat and needed to respond to get themselves out of a situation where they feared attack and feared injury."

Gillard said there was nothing wrong with barracking for a sporting side, but it was unacceptable for that to spiral into aggression.

"What we don't want to see of course is ... barracking at sporting contests degenerate into aggressive conduct or aggressive behaviour,'' she said.

"The debate we're having about what happened at the tennis is what side of the line the conduct was on."

Local media reports were filled again Thursday with witness accounts, with television footage showing a female officer spraying directly into one man's face before quickly retreating.

Police have defended their tough action, part of a zero tolerance policy to crowd behaviour which followed violent clashes between Serbian and Croatian fans last year.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon backed her officers and suggested a ban on full-strength beer as a first move to tackle the problem.

Tournament director Craig Tiley, who insisted on Wednesday the Open's international reputation had not been affected, said: "We don't rule anything out."

Greek fans have demanded an apology and said they were considereing legal action against police, calling the use of pepper spray "disgraceful and un-Australian actions", The Age newspaper reported.

"The Victoria Police must make a public apology for assaulting tennis fans," said the website of the Hellas Fan Club, whose T-shirts many of the Greek supporters were wearing at the match Tuesday between Chilean Fernando Gonzalez and Konstantinos Economidis of Greece.

And they vowed to continue coming to Melbourne Park.

The Herald Sun said the man at the centre of the brawl was a Hellas Fan Club member who has already been banned from soccer matches for 10 years.

Following the incident on Tuesday, three people were barred from the tournament and charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest.

Hibernian: Prison Guard's Is Football Racist - 20/01/2008

Source: http://www.sundaymail.co.uk

A PRISON officer has been forced to quit after hurling foulmouthed racist abuse at Hibs star Thierry Gathuessi.

William Allardyce, 42, launched the attack on the Cameroon defender during a match against Falkirk.

His shameful outburst - in which he branded Gathuessi, 25, a "black b******" - came after a clash between the Hibs defender and Bairns player Patrick Cregg.

Allardyce's disgusted fellow Falkirk fans turned on him and warned him to stop.

He fled the home side's Westfield stadium but was shopped to stewards.

They tracked the season ticket-holder down from his seat number. Allardyce admitted to police: "It was disgraceful."

We revealed Allardyce had been banned from SPL grounds after the stormy 1-1 draw on September 15.

He pleaded guilty lastweek to breach of the peace by shouting, swearing and using racist language at the game.

The thug was a prison officer for 20 years but quit within days of his crime.

Allardyce has since found a new job but fears losing it because of the conviction.

He was fined £200 at Falkirk Sheriff Court.

Falkirk FC said: "A life ban is an option. This club abhors racism and will do whatever it takes to stamp it out."

Four Hibs fans arrested at the match face trial for breach of the peace and racial abuse. John Dickie, 49, Gary Kerr, 30, Alexander Miller, 46 and Thomas Rawley, 49, deny the charges.

Iraklis Saloniki - PAOK Saloniki - 20/01/2008

Source: Reuters

Two Iraklis fans were stabbed during clashes between rival supporters before the Super League game against PAOK on Sunday.

Local police said around 150 fans from the two Thessaloniki clubs were involved in the violence that saw fans throwing rocks and bottles at each other and the police.

A number of parked cars were also damaged. Police responded with tear gas and made one arrest.

The two men who were stabbed - one in the arm and the other in the leg - were taken to hospital but authorities said their condition is not life-threatening.

The violence comes three days after an Olympiakos fan was stabbed to death after an attack by Panathinaikos supporters following a Greek Cup tie although police have since said they did not believe that incident to have been soccer-related.

Iraklis won the match 1-0 thanks to a goal in the 12th minute from Dimitris Giantsis.

Sheffield Wednesday - Sheffield United - 19/01/2008

Source : BBC News

Crackdown sees trouble-free match

Police have said a clamp down on hooligans before a football derby in Sheffield meant fewer offenders were arrested at the ground.
Earlier in the week officers had carried out raids on troublemakers to prevent violence flaring between rival Sheffield United and Wednesday fans.

On Saturday 17 people were arrested in or around the Hillsborough stadium but only for minor offences.

South Yorkshire Police mounted high visibility patrols around the ground.

The hooligans could have easily killed them but as they admitted later, while being questioned by the police, they only wanted to frighten their former schoolmates and take revenge for a fight that happened some time ago.

So far the police only detained 5 of the 20 hooligans. The oldest is 21, the youngest - only 16. One of them already has a criminal record and is known to the police for his rowdy behaviour at football matches.
