Bolton: Soccer yobs run amok - 26/02/1996
Source: Bolton Evening News
THIRTY hooligans were arrested in a massive police operation as rival soccer thugs were involved in a series of running battles in Bolton and Farnworth last night.
The police team - including members of the GMP Tactical Aid Squad - made the arrests before and after the Premiership clash at Burnden Park.
But, despite the high number of arrests, police chiefs were delighted with the security operation - which they believe prevented outbreaks of more serious disorder.
Intelligence gathered before the derby clash with Manchester United had predicted trouble between rival fans. Cards encouraging fans to meet for fights at pre-arranged destinations are known to have been in circulation.
Police chiefs believe much of the trouble last night was organised. Up to half a dozen false messages were phoned to police after the match in a bid to lure officers away from where the thugs were gathering. Police made a total of 30 arrests which included 21 Bolton Wanderers fans. They have been charged with a variety of charges including drunkenness and racist chanting. A total of 20 fans were ejected.
Nine of those arrested were seized after clashes between rival fans in the Manchester Road stand.
As revealed by the BEN last week United fans were known to have broken the strict segregation policy at Burnden Park by bribing local pub regulars to buy tickets for them.
Trouble began yesterday more than an hour before the televised 5pm kick off. Incidents were reported throughout Bolton and Farnworth. In one incident yobs rampaged through a Farnworth superstore.
Twenty minutes into the game police officers and stewards moved in to the main stand after outbreaks of fighting. Outside the stadium after the game a bottle was thrown at a police officer.
The bulk of trouble after the game was in pubs in the Farnworth area. A window of the Black Horse pub in Higher Market Street was broken and damage was reported at a service station in Bolton Road. Supt Ian McLoughlin, head of Bolton Central Police, said: "The vast majority of fans were well behaved. The minority of idiots were well policed and prevented from causing far greater damage."

Soccer rowdies in track scuffles
POLICE reinforcements were called to deal with up to 60 rowdy fans after trouble erupted at Blackrod railway station at the weekend.
Officers were sent to the station to deal with outbreaks of violence involving supporters of the Vauxhall Conference club Macclesfield Town.
Trouble began after Macclesfield had beaten Chorley in the second leg of the FA Vase semi final on Saturday.
The fans were escorted to Chorley Railway Station after the game but left the train when it reached Blackrod. Scuffles broke out and extra police officers were drafted to the scene after reports of hooligans running up and down the track.
A police spokesman said no one was arrested and there was no injuries.

Bolton linked with soccer yob fears - 31/05/1996
Source: Bolton Evening News
BOLTON soccer yobs could be teaming up with hooligans in other clubs across Greater Manchester in a bid to wreck next month's Euro '96 Championships.
Football hooligan expert Peter Brighton says gangs of yobs from clubs including Bolton, Oldham, Wigan and Manchester City have pledged to team up in a bid to take on German thugs who will travelling to Britain to follow their team at Old Trafford in the early stages of the event.
Mr Brighton, a researcher who says he has contacts in gangs in Britain and abroad, believes there is unlikely to be massive pitched battles outside football grounds involving large gangs because of heavy police presences. But he warned that the problem could be pushed away from stadiums to smaller outlying towns such as Bolton, Blackburn and Blackpool, where the presence of a hard-core yobs could result in mayhem.
Mr Brighton, who writes for the anti-fascist journal, Searchlight, said around 300 hooligans from Germany - some with neo nazi connections - will be travelling to Manchester with a mission to "get the English".
He said: "The problem has been exaggerated, but there will certainly be a hooligan element intent on causing trouble.
"In England there have been moves to set up superfirms where the emphasis is on fighting for a region or town and in Greater Manchester gangs are getting together to take on the Germans.
"I don't think we will see big battles at matches but it will probably be pushed into other areas away from the ground and we could see some nasty injuries. "There could even be the possibility of fights arranged in smaller towns. It sounds bizarre but rival gangs help each other to outwit the police so they can fight."
Greater Manchester's Assistant Chief Constable, Malcolm George, is the national co-ordinator for the policing of Euro '96. He said he recognises the potential problems but is confident the police will remain on top of the situation.
He said: "Whilst I would like to say the event will be trouble free, I cannot guarantee total security. What we are trying to do is minimise the problems that a mindless minority could cause, by normal police methods with the ability to respond quickly."
Police plans for the event will be revealed in detail next week.

Stoke City - Newcastle United - League Cup - 20/09/1995
Source: forum
It went off before the game outside the ground, nothing over the top but afterwards 300-400 Stoke just went beserk turning over cars and vans that belonged to Newcastle fans, attacking the escort on several occasions and just generally going around attacking any Newcastle fans they could find.
Local press stated that it all started after a Stoke girl aged about 12-15 got slashed before the game by Newcastle. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

geordies everywhere before the game in small groups, not really proper lads, as they were holed up in Fenton of all places, but barmies all the same, swanning around as if they owned the place. I was in town from 3pm and there was already geordies all over in the off licenses getting wasted, fuck knows what they did up until 7.45pm, although I'd imagine downed a fair few more bottles of scotch. Only trouble I saw before the game was outside the Red Lion when 10-15 geordies tried geting in and a pub full of Stoke charged out and chased them off, but the stories doing the rounds on the Boothen was that a young Stokie girl had got hit with a brick, so that adding to the geordie invasion of Stoke town centre(agree again with o.a.p never seen anything like that since Man City late 80s all over and lots of street battles) led to many Stoke wanting some revenge so basically just went oon the rampage trashing cars, hitting out at any geordies who remotely looked like lads, and yes a few scarfers did get whacked, and then turned onto the ob. Mad a s fuck night, loads of Stoke involved and many got pulled later on as ob went on the scout in the local pubs for likely suspects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source: Newcastle view
Group of about twenty of us going in to corner shops and as two or three paid the rest of us helped ourselves. Ended up at some pub near the ground with more geordies in than Stoke and there wern't any problems until three stoke lads came in and did the old "F-ing Geordie wankers" stuff. Few lads in the pub took exception and it kicked off with glasses/ bottles flying everywhere. Lasted about five seconds till the stoke lads left under the barrage. In all fairness a pretty minor incident. Unfortunately a young girl got a nasty cut on her hand from some broken glass and was treated outside by st john ambulance. Thought nothing else of it till after the game and it's going mental with our scarfers getting spanked all over the place. Eventually got back to the minibus to be greeted by no windows leading to a f-ing cold journey back.
