Colombia : Atlético Nacional - Independiente Medellin - 27/09/2009

Source : Latin American Herald Tribune

One Fan Dead, Two Injured by Rival Team’s Supporters in Colombia

A fan of football team Atletico Nacional died Sunday and two others were injured when supporters of rival Independiente Medellin confronted them at a highway rest stop in the northwestern part of Colombia, regional police said.

The incident occurred in a rural spot near Marmato, a town in Caldas province where the two groups of fans stopped on their trips back home after their teams’ Saturday night games.

The commander of the Caldas police, Col. John Jaime Ospina, told reporters that the two groups of fans were traveling in buses heading for Manizales, which is the regional capital, and Medellin, where both clubs are based.

The Atletico Nacional fans were returning from Medellin, where they had attended their team’s match with Deportivo Pasto, which ended in a 1-1 tie, while the Independiente fans were returning from Cali, where their team had beat America 1-2.

The chief said that some of the Independiente fans on two buses got out at La Garrucha, where some Nacional fans from Caldas were also making a rest stop.

The Nacional fans were attacked with knives by their Independiente rivals, who pursued them to a house where they tried to seek refuge, Ospina said.

“The two buses in which the (Independiente) fans were traveling are immobilized,” the police official told RCN radio, which did not report the number of people who are on board the vehicles.

Ospina added that the authorities are trying to identify the people implicated in the murder and assault – who presumably are still on board the buses – so that they can be arrested.

Racist fans 'should go to prison' - 28/09/2009

Source : blackpoolgazette.co.uk

A PREMIERSHIP football boss says racist fans should be jailed in the wake of an incident which saw Blackpool player Jason Euell suffer abuse.
The Seasiders captain was racially abused during last week's Carling Cup game against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

And now Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has let rip against the thugs who he says threaten to ruin the sport.

He said: "That is disgusting – there's no place for that in the game.
"Surely we can't have that sort of behaviour now?

"Anyone who does it should be put in prison – not banned from football.
"Stick them where they belong, in the nut-house. It's wrong."

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway also called for action over the chanting calling the person who made the remark "an absolute disgrace of a human being."

A 47-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody. He has now been released pending inquiries.

Blackpool FC Club Secretary Matt Williams told The Gazette the player is now keen to put the incident behind him.

Cricket : India - Pakistan - 26/09/2009

Source : CricInfo.com

Pitch invaders will be arrested

The ICC says it has reviewed and enhanced the security apparatus at the grounds hosting the Champions Trophy following the pitch invasion at the conclusion of the India-Pakistan match on Saturday. It also said any such acts in the future would lead to arrests and prosecution.

"A number of arrests were made and those people have been prosecuted," an ICC spokesperson told the Hindustan Times. "Any spectator who invades the pitch can expect to be arrested, prosecuted and if found guilty, fined under current South African legislation."

After the final wicket fell, Pakistani fans crossed the advertising board separating the ground from the stands to celebrate the win before the last few were tackled by security guards. South African grounds allow spectators relatively easy access to the playing area, with an advertising board typically presenting the only hurdle.

Cambridge United - Luton Town - 26/09/2009

Source : cambridge-news.co.uk

Hunt launched for football hooligans

A HUNT has been launched for the hooligans responsible for sparking violent scenes during Cambridge United's home clash with Luton Town.

Police were forced to wear riot gear for protection after one officer suffered a cut to the hand as the situation spiralled out of control.

Missiles were thrown, seven arrests were made and Luton captain Kevin Nicholls was involved in an ugly altercation with nearby U's supporters.

Chief inspector Darren Alderson, who was in charge of the operation for Cambridgeshire police, said: "A post-match investigation is now under way which will seek to identify those responsible for throwing missiles inside the ground, and we will do everything we can to prosecute them."

Tempers flared between fans of the U's and their visitors Luton Town, with missiles being thrown at rival supporters, police officers and the pitch in ugly scenes.

Seven arrests were made during the course of the tense match, which Luton won 4-3 in front of a bumper crowd.

Chief inspector Darren Alderson, who was in charge of the operation for Cambridgeshire police, said: "It was a good crowd for the club, but there was disorder between the fans of both clubs.

"Missiles were thrown onto the pitch and at rival fans, as well as some at my officers.

"Our officers wore NATO helmets for their own safety. A post-match investigation is now underway which will seek to identify those responsible for throwing missiles inside the ground, and we will do everything we can to prosecute them.

"One officer sustained a minor cut to his hand while he was engaging with the crowd, but I can categorically state there was no stabbing. He was immediately taken off duty, and was treated by medical staff at the ground."

Chief Insp Alderson added that large numbers of fans had gathered at pubs around the city, including The Regal and the Seven Stars, but no trouble was reported outside the stadium.

One arrest was made for a drug related offence, with the others all relating to public order offences.

Bradford City - Chesterfield FC - 27/09/2009

Source: english press (thanks to the sender)

Several supporters yesterday travelled by train to the game after posting their intentions on the board. About 15 of our lads were met at the station by 50 to 60 Bradford fans who simply set about them with one lad hit over the head with a bottle.

The Police tactics were to keep our boys safe by holding them in McDonalds. It was stated by one Policeman that they only had 10 policemen available for the game. What I'd like to know is what is the point of our resident police trio trotting round the countryside following our fans just to photograph them inside the grounds. Why weren't they on the streets with the Bradford Police so stretched. What a waste of money and resources.

I warned everyone about the Bradford stewarding before we went there, true to form they were up to their tricks. justifying their existance by ejecting some of our fans onto the unprotected streets of Bradford. Admittedly one of those ejected was justified for breaking seats. The others were boys just singing and shouting as all fans of that age do.

As Police resourses become even more stretched these days it is obvious that the breeding ground is there for football violence to rear it's head. As we left the ground yesterday groups of Bradford fans were standing across the road identifying different cfc fans who were obviously heading for the station unescorted. At the same time the police were in attendance 4 vehicles / with about the 10 personnel. The priority being videoing our lads walking away from the ground.

I'm not defending our fans in any way but the fundamentals of todays police is that the away support have ALWAYS come to cause trouble in their eyes and the evenhandedness doesn't seem to be there.

The good thing about this is maybe those boys that travelled independently will think again in the future.

Two dead in clashes between football hooligans in Colombia - 29/09/2009

Source : earthtimes.org

Two Colombian football fans died in clashes between hooligans, Colombian authorities said Tuesday. Fans of top-flight clubs Deportes Tolima and Deportivo Cali clashed on a road in central Colombia on the way back from their teams' away matches.

Some Cali hooligans chased three Tolima fans, and one of these fell down a ravine, said Colonel Israel Robayo, police commander in the province of Tolima.

Several Cali fans were arrested and charges were pressed against them, although they were released pending further investigation.

In a different incident, Bogota police said fans of local top- flight clubs Millonarios and Independiente Santa Fe clashed in a western neighbourhood of the city, and one of them was stabbed to death.

Colombian prosecutors further filed charges against four people who were charged with having killed an Atletico Nacional fan over the weekend on a road in the central Colombian province of Caldas.

France unveils anti-hooligan police unit - 30/09/2009

Source : AFP

France's Interior Ministry on Wednesday set up a new police group to tackle hooliganism after a stormy start to the football season.

The announcement creating the "national division to fight hooliganism" came a week after the ministry unveiled new measures to try to stamp out violence at football grounds.

The new group was tasked with "improving coordination of intelligence capabilities between security officials on the ground, improving identification of high risk individuals" to help detain and prosecute offenders, the ministry said.

Last week's measures included increased police surveillance of high-risk groups, stricter ground bans for violent individuals, clubs taking systematic legal action against trouble-makers and points reductions for teams whose supporters were involved in violence at matches.

The crackdown follows trouble at several grounds forcing referees to take players off.

Parliamentary legislation is expected shortly to back up the measures, including a ban on smoke bombs and fireworks inside grounds and an increase in the length of ground exclusions from the current three months to six.

New unit to fight football hooliganism in France

France's Interior Ministry announced the creation of a new unit Wednesday that will target football hooligans.

A day after the death of Toulouse supporter Brice Taton, who died in Belgrade after being beaten by Serbian hooligans ahead of a Europa League match, the ministry announced that the new unit will be charged with surveillance of potential troublemakers.

Its members will share information with security officers in the field in order to "arrest and punish" hooligans, the ministry said in a statement following a meeting between Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux, French football representatives and police officials.

The ministry didn't say how many people would be appointed to this new task force.

Several incidents occurred in the French league this season, with referees forced to suspend games after supporters threw flares onto the pitch.

Last week, Hortefeux announced new measures to try to eradicate hooliganism, including points deductions for teams whose supporters were involved in violence.

The French Interior Ministry said that a minimum of 2,500 police are deployed every match day in the French league.

Hooliganism is particularly acute among the ranks of Paris Saint-Germain fans. In November 2006, Julien Quemener, a member of the Boulogne Boys fan group, was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer after a UEFA Cup match against Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Millwall fans angry at being held to account over clash - 30/09/2009

Source : Bromley Times

MILLWALL fans have hit out at the Football Association's decision to charge the club in relation to the violent Carling Cup match in which they say they were not the main culprits.

On Monday the FA charged both West Ham United FC and Millwall FC in relation to the serious crowd disturbances in and around Upton Park on August 25.

West Ham was charged on four counts of failing to control their supporters whilst Millwall were charged with three counts of the same offence.

Police are still trawling through the CCTV footage and taking witnesses statements from the night which saw one 43-year-old Millwall fan from Eltham get stabbed after being chased by an angry mob outside the stadium.

West Ham's Carlton Cole and Millwall's Jason Price also claim they were racially abused by supporters.

But Millwall fans say their club should not have been charged as West Ham supporters were the ones who started the trouble and invaded the pitch.

Editor of the Millwall's fanzine Lion Roars Paul Casella said: "The thing they should be considering is that someone was stabbed and nearly murdered. Although racism in football is a terrible thing, it pales into insignificance when someone has been stabbed.

"The FA have reacted in a predictable way. Our former chairman Reg Burr once said 'Millwall is a coat peg upon which football hangs all its ills'. That was said in the 1980s and it as much true today as it was then.

"The charges against Millwall are wrong. I can't see how they can control fans at another club's grounds when they have not been invited to the safety meetings. It is preposterous.

"Outside the grounds most of the reported violence was by West Ham fans and inside the grounds the only pitch invasions were by West Ham supporters."

Millwall were charged with failure to ensure their supporters refrained from violent, threatening, obscene and provocative behaviour; failure to ensure their supporters refrained from racist behaviour and failure to ensure their supporters didn't throw missiles, harmful or dangerous objects onto the pitch.

West Ham was charged with all of the above and failure to ensure their supporters didn't enter the field of play.

Both clubs now have 14 days to respond to the charges.

Three year ban for Manchester derby pitch invader - 30/09/2009

Source : ESPN

A man who was shoved in the face by Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy after running onto the Old Trafford pitch during Manchester United's 4-3 derby win earlier this month was banned from attending football matches for three years.

Craig Bellamy is involved in an incident with a Manchester United fan.

Jake Clarke, 21, from Chorley, Lancashire, admitted entering the playing area after Michael Owen scored United's injury-time winner. Bellamy confronted Clarke after the solo pitch invasion, which came at the end of a highly charged game on September 20.

The bricklayer, who had to be restrained by four stewards, told officers he ''got overexcited'' and ''just wanted to celebrate with the players'' after Michael Owen scored a last-gasp winner.

Clarke, who has previous convictions for cannabis possession and common assault, told Trafford Magistrates' Court that he ''deeply regrets'' his behaviour. He said: ''I'm gutted about what I have done. I know it was a stupid action. I just wanted to celebrate.''

The court heard Clarke was leaving the ground when Owen scored deep into injury time, and the fan was pushed towards the pitch before he decided to enter it. Steve Woodman, prosecuting, showed CCTV footage of the incident, and said that Manchester United are considering imposing their own ban on the football fan.

Their rivals, Manchester City, could have equalised if it had not been for Clarke, Mr Woodman suggested.

''The defendant's actions could well have caused a full scale pitch invasion. It will have been viewed by millions across the world,'' he said. ''It was a very tense, very high profile match.

''The game went right down to the wire. The City players were trying to get back to the centre circle to respond to the late goal. City may well have been able to push on and score the equaliser.''

Police are not investigating Bellamy over the incident but he is thought to have received a warning from the Football Association, Mr Woodman said. Ian Huggan, defending, said that football is a large part of Clarke's life and he attends around 40 games a season.

''This was a foolish mistake by Mr Clarke. It has caused a lot of concern and anxiety for the people involved,'' he admitted. But he asked the court not to impose a ban on his client, saying: ''Is it right that this defendant is made subject to a banning order when the player who took the action is just given a warning?''

If Bellamy had not got involved the incident would have been dealt with ''very quietly'' and would have ''gone away'', Mr Huggan said. He pointed out that other football fans who have invaded pitches have been given cautions rather than bans.

But Anne Marie Evans, chair of the Magistrate's bench, decided to ban Clarke from all football matches for three years, and imposed a fine of £305. She said: ''Your explanation was that you wanted to celebrate. This does not give you any right to run onto the pitch. Your actions could have resulted in disorder and possible violence.''

5 arrested at Wrexham v Chester derby match

FIVE people were arrested following the Wrexham and Chester derby match at The Racecourse yesterday.

Officers moved in to break-up two specific groups described as being “intent on causing trouble”.

A police spokeswoman said further arrests were anticipated in the coming days.

Town centre inspector Chris Beasley had said officers would be present in large numbers, before, during and after the all-ticket match, which kicked off at noon.

Officers clad in riot gear were out in force to deal with any potential troublemakers.

A police spokesman said: “Five people have been arrested as a result of the Wrexham v Chester football match.

“Two groups were intent on causing trouble following the game and specifically trained officers from North Wales Police and Cheshire Police intervened.

“No-one was injured as a result of the trouble and further arrests are anticipated in the next few days.”

Police ready for Croatian-fan violence in Timisoara - 29/09/2009

Source: Romanian Times

Over 1,000 special police are ready to prevent violence by Croatian fans during the Europa League match with Dinamo Zagreb to be hosted by FC Timisoara on Thursday.

Local police said today (Tues) several hundred "high-risk" Croatian fans were expected to arrive in Timisoara, a town known for its Serb community, and violent incidents were therefore expected, according to local police.

Croat fans are expected to arrive on Thursday, a day after the team, and they will be constantly minded by Croat police officers and local police.

FC Timisoara will Dinamo Zagreb in Group A in the Europa League competition on Thursday.

Serbians mourn death of young French soccer fan - 30/09/2009

Source: http://www.wtop.com/?nid=157&sid=1773784

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - Thousands gathered in downtown Belgrade on Wednesday to mourn the death of a 28-year-old French soccer fan who was fatally beaten by Serbian hooligans.

The city observed a day of mourning as people lined up at a central square to light candles and lay flowers for Brice Taton, who died in a Belgrade hospital on Tuesday.

Taton died of brain and other injuries he suffered during the Sept. 17 attack before the Europa League match between Partizan Belgrade and French club Toulouse.

Ten people were arrested as suspects in the attack. They are expected to be charged with first-degree murder and face up to 40 years in prison.

An investigative judge questioned Taton's parents on Wednesday as part of an investigation into their son's death. French sports minister Rama Yade was expected in Belgrade to meet Serbian officials investigating the attack.

The Frenchman's death has sparked public outrage and rekindled a debate about the country's ability to overcome its violent past following the Balkan wars of the 1990s.

"It is time we all take our share of responsibility," said 41-year-old linguist Radmila Maslovic. "I came to express my protest and deep sadness."

More protest marches against far-right groups, which have recently attacked foreigners and gay activists, are scheduled for this week in the capital.

Return of the casuals - 01/09/2009

Source : The Sun

Season 09/10 - September - Page 6 Casuals

A FORMER football thug last night warned the country is in the grip of a new breed of ultra-violent casuals - as we reveal courts aren't using new powers to ban the yobs.

John O'Kane, 40, ex-leader of the infamous Celtic Soccer Crew (CSC), says organised "firms" are using levels of violence not seen north of the border for years.

His claim comes just days after sickening scenes of hooliganism between West Ham and Millwall.

Official figures also show Scottish courts have granted only 59 Football Banning Orders - preventing thugs from entering grounds - despite cops applying for a whopping 515 since the legislation was introduced in 2006.

O'Kane, who has 33 football-related convictions, said: "We are definitely seeing an increase in violence."

The dad-of-two, who claims to have now turned his back on violence, had his EAR sliced off and was stabbed in the leg during his years as a casual.

A host of recent incidents have sparked fears of a return to the peak of football hooliganism in the 1980s.

Last month a group allegedly connected with O'Kane's old CSC group were caught up in running battles with members of an Orange walk.

Six people were arrested during the hour-long mayhem in Glasgow city centre. Five more were nabbed later.

In May, it was claimed Partick Thistle and Airdrie casuals were responsible for a battle in the city's west end.

And well-known hooligans were said to have taken part in the riots involving Rangers fans at the UEFA Cup Final in Manchester in May 2008.

Last night O'Kane, from Glasgow, said: "In the old days the 'firms' of casuals had maybe 10 out of 200 people they could rely on.

"Now the crews are smaller - but tougher. There may be only around 30 or so in a firm but every one of them will be handy and pretty committed.

"We are seeing guys in their late teens or early twenties who are not scared to get involved. There are no hangers-on or 'pavement dancers'."

O'Kane claims youngsters are drawn to organised groups because they've been glamourised in blockbuster films such as The Football Factory.

A remake of the 1980s' flick The Firm will be released next month.

Explaining the attraction of the yob gangs, O'Kane said: "There's a camaraderie among crews - the lads feel as if they're part of something. There's also the adrenaline rush, too.

"I think people are attracted by the films as well as celebrity programmes like the Danny Dyer shows.

"Guys in a crew also get to travel throughout Britain and see different parts of the country."

O'Kane insists he's turned his back on football violence despite being BANNED from every ground in the UK.

He's fighting the police order which also prevents him being near areas surrounding stadiums where Celtic play, before and after the games.

He said: "I put all that stuff behind me a while ago, so all that the football banning order does is make it difficult to see my kids.

"I've lost jobs and relationships over being involved in soccer trouble.

"One ex-girlfriend said to me, 'You love Celtic more than me. I told her, 'Hen, I love RANGERS more than you!"

Last night the Scottish Government called on sheriffs to take a tougher approach to soccer thugs.

A spokesman said: "Football Banning Orders send out an important message that violent behaviour and abusive language will not be tolerated in Scotland's football grounds.

"However, we are concerned at the slow rate of implementation.

"We'll continue to do what we can but our efforts can only go so far.

"We are now working to raise awareness among sheriffs of FBOs."

The Scottish Court Service said it could not comment.
