| Two more arrests after Rangers riot - 18/03/2009Source : Manchester Evening News POLICE investigating the rioting after last year's Uefa Cup final in Manchester arrested two more suspects this morning. | Police appeal over City fight - 18/03/2009
Source : South Wales Echo
THESE Cardiff City fans are wanted in connection with a brawl that followed a last-minute goal in the Bluebirds’ clash at Birmingham this year.
Detectives in the West Midlands said that fans from both clubs were involved in the fight at Birmingham City’s 30,000-seater St Andrews ground.
The fighting followed Lee Bowyer’s late equaliser five minutes and 10 seconds into injury time which levelled the Championship game at 1-1 .
A number of Birmingham fans were arrested when uniformed officers intervened and detectives have now released photographs of Bluebirds’ supporters who are also believed to have been involved in the disorder on Saturday, January 17.
There are believed to have been more than 1,000 travelling Cardiff fans in the ground on the day.
Detective Constable David Maccall, from West Midlands Police, appealed for the fans themselves to come forward as well as anyone else who recognises the images to contact officers.
He said: “The vast majority of football fans go to matches to support their teams, enjoy the atmosphere and behave impeccably.
“It is only a very small minority of so-called fans who start trouble and go looking for violence.
“It is these fans who spoil it for everyone and no-one who attends a football match should have to put up with fearing for their safety.
“West Midlands Police will not tolerate violent and anti-social behaviour at what is a family orientated event.”
“I would urge anyone who knows the men, or the men themselves, to please come forward.”

"Based on the heightened risk of problems surrounding tonight's match, police have deployed extra units including riot squads," Amsterdam police said in a statement. Despite the confiscations, only two arrests were made — one for weapon possession and another drug-related arrest. Police did not release the nationalities of those arrested. ************************************************************* Source : Expatica Netherlands Amsterdam police arrest football fansFootball fans were detained in Amsterdam Wednesday in preparation for the UEFA cup match between Ajax and Olympique Marseille. Dutch police said Wednesday they had arrested 29 football fans ahead of and during a crucial UEFA Cup match between Amsterdam's Ajax and France's Olympique Marseille. "We have arrested a total of 29 people, most of them before the match, but some after it started," Amsterdam police spokeswoman Chermain van Damme told AFP, with offences ranging from weapons possession and public violence to drunkenness. She could not say what the nationalities were of the detained. The first group was detained after a search of buses transporting Olympique Marseille fans to the Amsterdam Arena yielded "a large amount of weapons", she said, including knives, tear gas canisters and spiked metal rods. Others were apprehended after fist fights broke out among supporters of the two clubs in the Amsterdam city centre and at a train station. No injuries were reported. Further arrests were for being drunk in public at the arena itself. "We had deployed extra police since this morning in expectation of confrontations," said van Damme.

CSKA Moscow fans arrested at Ukraine border
Ukrainian border police on Thursday arrested four CSKA Moscow supporters attempting to enter the country illegally on foot to attend their team's UEFA Cup match at Shakhtar Donetsk. News reports said that the CSKA fans were detained near the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, some 400 metres from the international frontier, and charged with illegal border crossing.
The four had intended to bypass Russian and Ukrainian border checkpoints, as two of the fans lacked passports, and the other two did not want to desert their mates, said Dmitry Horkoltsev, a Ukraine border troops spokesman.
One detainee carrying a Russian army draft registration card, and a second a Xerox of his passport, as identification documents, were not permitted into Ukraine by Russian border police.
The four then decided to walk across the Russo-Ukrainian border on foot bypassing the checkpoint, but were detained by Ukrainian cops on the other side of the border.
"They said that they had to be at their team's game, come what may," Horkoltsev told the Interfax news agency.

| AS ST-Etienne - Werder Bremen - 18/03/2009
Source : Sportbox
Hooligans mar Bremen victory Werder Bremen's general manager Klaus Allofs has criticised the group of travelling fans that threw objects including fireworks onto the pitch during the UEFA Cup match at St Etienne on Wednesday night.
The German club, tenth in the Bundesliga table, otherwise enjoyed a fruitful night in France as a 2-2 draw secured a 3-2 aggregate win over St Etienne, sending Bremen through to the quarter-finals.
Yet Allofs was clearly distracted by the hooligans, saying after the match: "We are ashamed of such action because it is simply unsporting.
"People's lives are put at risk when missiles are thrown at the opposition fans' areas and we cannot understand it in the slightest.
"We will do all we can to find those responsible and all we can do to react is ban them from stadia."

| Drogba cautioned for throwing coin at Burnley fans - 21/03/2009
Source: The Guardian
Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has received a caution for allegedly throwing a coin at Burnley fans during a match in November, it emerged today.
The 30-year-old star went to a London police station yesterday and was cautioned for common assault.
He was said to have thrown the coin after he was on the receiving end of at least one missile during the Carling Cup fourth round tie at Stamford Bridge.
The incident took place when Drogba scored his first goal of the season after 27 minutes of the game.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "On 2 December, police interviewed a 30-year-old man under caution, by prior arrangement, in connection with an incident at the Chelsea v Burnley match at Stamford Bridge on 12 November.
"He did not attend the police station and was not arrested.
"The matter was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service for their consideration, and on their advice the man attended a central London police station yesterday and was cautioned for common assault."
Burnley won the match on penalties.

| South Africa: Riot police help former France coach Michel escape fans - 22/03/2009
Source : Reuters
Former France manager Henri Michel had to be driven away by riot police to escape angry fans after his Mamelodi Sundowns team were knocked out of the South African Cup on Sunday.
A Reuters witness saw Michel being escorted by heavily armed riot policemen and then being bundled into their vehicle before being driven away from Pretoria's Super Stadium with irate supporters chasing after him.
Sundowns fans chanted "Michel must go" after the Cup holders suffered a 1-0 home defeat after extra time by unfancied Platinum Stars.
Sunday's loss followed a 4-1 defeat by champions SuperSport United in the Pretoria derby on Thursday, a result which effectively ended Sundowns' championship hopes.
Michel, who has coached extensively across Africa, took over at Sundowns in October and has had varied results with his expensively assembled squad.
Club owner Patrice Motsepe, a billionaire mining magnate, was also accosted by angry fans demanding the sacking of the French coach. Motsepe promised an announcement on Monday.

| Nottingham Forest: Forest yobs 'indefinite' ban warning for coin throwing - 21/03/2009
Source: local press (thanks to the sender)
FOREST fans who throw coins and spit at visiting supporters will be banned indefinitely from the City Ground. Alan Bexon, Forest safety officer, says there has been a rise in spitting and coin throwing from the upper tier of the Bridgford End during the last five home matches. Visiting fans have written about the problem on web-based football forums. Mr Bexon said: "We are starting to get a bit of a reputation with visiting supporters. There are some Forest fans letting themselves, other fans and the club down." Mr Bexon said the layout of the ground meant visiting supporters had to sit in the lower tier of the Bridgford End. "When we get games like Derby County and Cardiff City, when we have 30 coaches of visiting supporters, we would not be able to make sure they were able to get in and out safely if they were in any other part of the ground," he said. "We are determined to deal with this problem and are working closely with police." Mr Bexon said tickets for the first ten rows of seats in the upper Bridgford End for the games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bristol City would not be sold on matchdays. The Post reported earlier this month that a 15-year-old from Bulwell was banned from the City Ground indefinitely after being caught throwing a coin during the game with Derby County on February 21. He was initially arrested for throwing missiles, an offence under Section 2 of the Football Offences Act 1991, after being identified by a plain-clothed police officer. Paul Ellis, chairman of Nottingham Forest Supporters Club, said: "I sit at the front of the upper tier of the Bridgford End and at the Derby league game a coin was thrown over my head from behind and hit the wall in front of me. "Whoever threw it was aiming to get it over the wall and on to the Derby fans below. "It's terrible that people throw coins, spit or do anything else to target visiting supporters. They should be banned and made an example of." Superintendent Mark Holland said: "We have had spitting incidents and coins being thrown. "Throwing missiles within a football ground is illegal and has the potential to cause serious injury. It can result in a fine of up to £1,000, but it's the ban that will really hurt these people. "We will also look to prosecute through the courts those found to be involved." Mr Bexon said Forest were planning to install protective netting above visiting supporters in the Bridgford End next season. The netting, which would cost £13,000, would stretch out four metres. Mr Bexon said: "It's something that has worked really well at Sheffield United. I've been in talks with their safety officer and we are meeting a company next week who will be installing the netting at the City Ground." Steve Hicks, safety officer at Sheffield United, said: "We had a significant problem with coins being thrown from the upper tier of The Bramall Lane Stand on to Sheffield Wednesday fans during last season's home derby game. "The configuration of seating for this year's derby game was going to be the same so we got a local company to make us protective netting. "As a result of the netting, the local derby this year passed without incident. "It worked so well that we have kept it for the remainder of this season."
