| Hamburg fined for crowd trouble in northern derby - 17/10/2006
Source: Reuters
Hamburg SV have been fined 20,000 euros ($25,070) by the German Football Association after a fan threw a broken glass bottle at Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese in a Bundesliga game.
The small bottle was one of several items thrown by Hamburg fans in the direction of Wiese during the 1-1 draw between the two northern rivals on Sept. 23. The goalkeeper was unhurt.
Hamburg, who play away to Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday, have yet to win this season and are second from bottom of the Bundesliga with five points from seven games. _________________

| Coritiba: Fans ambush own team - 05/10/2006
Source: Reuters
PLAYERS of Brazil second division club Coritiba fought with their own fans in an airport, after a hostile reception on return from an away game today (AEST).
Around 50 fans waited for the players at the airport, in southern Brazil, to protest and insult the team following the previous night's 2-0 defeat by Ceara.
Television pictures showed chaotic scenes as the players entered the arrivals hall to be greeted by furious supporters.
Witnesses said that several players and the club security hit back, exchanging punches with the fans, while litter bins were thrown around the hall.
The fighting lasted several minutes before police brought the situation under control.
Coritiba later condemned the supporters' behaviour.
"The supporters have every right to peacefully show their discontent over the results on the field, and even in relation to the directors and the president," said a club statement.
"But we can't agree that violence and aggression are the methods used to show opinions."
Coritiba is sixth in the second division, known as Serie B. The top four are promoted. _________________

| RAD Beograd - Novi Pazar - 15/10/2006
Source: Reüters
Belgrade police arrested 152 fans for racist insults at a Serbian second division match between local team Rad and Novi Pazar late on Wednesday .
"Police officers have arrested 152 Rad supporters, including 47 juveniles," police said. "The offenders shouted slogans inciting racial, ethnic and religious hatred and intolerance."
The home fans shouted anti-Muslim slogans at Novi Pazar players and police moved in to remove them from the stadium.
Novi Pazar is a Muslim-majority town in western Serbia. Some ultranationalist Serbs are hostile to Muslims, often glorifying the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of some 8,000 Bosnian Muslims by Bosnian Serbs.
It was a second outbreak of racism at Serbia's soccer grounds in four days after a black player was abused during a first division match on Saturday.
Borac Cacak's Zimbabwean striker Mike Tawmanjira was insulted by the club's fans who wore white hoods with Ku Klux Klan insignia, did a Nazi salute and held a banner saying the player was unwelcome in Serbia. _________________

| Football violence down as more hooligans banned - 21/10/2006
Source : REÜTERS
Football banning orders have been slapped on a record number of hooligans, the Home Office said on Saturday, with Leeds United fans topping the list.
In the 2005/06 season there were 3,387 hooligans subject to the orders, which prevent known trouble-makers from attending domestic and international matches.
A total of 995 were imposed during the year, making a net total rise of seven percent year-on-year after allowing for orders that have expired.
Arrests for football-related offences dipped by seven percent to 3,462 - the third consecutive season to see a fall.
"This decrease in arrests, coupled with the increase in banning orders, shows that banning orders do work," said Stephen Thomas, the Association of Chief Police Officers' spokesman on football issues.
Football Association Chief Executive Brian Barwick said the figures reflected an ongoing culture change among fans against bad behaviour.
Leeds United had a total of 115 banning orders, including an extra 20 orders imposed on its fans during the year.
Portsmouth were second with 110, followed by Cardiff City with 109.
Stoke City came next with 108 and Manchester United with 106 orders.
Stoke City also gained the largest number of orders in the year with 58.
The Premiership overtook the Championship for the largest number of arrests in the year.
There were 1,221 at Premier League games, up from 984 in 2004/05, while Championship arrests fell from to 877 from 1,047.
The club with the highest number of arrests was Tottenham Hotspur, with 169.
It was followed by Manchester United (147), Chelsea (126), Sheffield Wednesday (89), Coventry City (88) and Leeds United (76).
Since the orders were introduced after Euro 2000, 5,173 individuals have been banned. Of those, 1,776 orders have expired.
Of the 5,173 total, just 69 individuals have subsequently been involved in football violence - which officials said was a 96 percent rehabilitation rate. _________________

| Nottingham Forest - Bristol City - 21/10/2006
Source : BBC NEWS
Arrests after football fans clash
Bristol City and Nottingham Forest football fans were involved in a violent skirmish after their teams League One match, police confirmed.
The trouble between the large group of supporters started on Radcliffe Road, Nottingham, after Saturday's game. The nearby Amici wine bar was damaged inside and out during the incident. Three men from the Avon and Somerset area, aged 17, 41 and 44, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and criminal damage. A police horse sustained minor injuries in the incident. Ch Supt Peter Moyes, of Nottinghamshire Police, said CCTV footage of the area is being examined and more arrests are expected to follow. "This is a serious matter and we have a full-scale investigation underway to identify all those involved. "Football related violence is not tolerated in Nottingham and where intelligence exists we will enforce the Red Card scheme banning offenders from all grounds in the country," he said. Colin Sexton, chief executive of Bristol City, said the club was looking into the incident. But he added that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000 City fans who went to the match behaved in an exemplary fashion. Police are also investigating a minor incident where two Bristol men were arrested on public order offences at the CASA bar on Trent Bridge before the match. _________________

Major security for football match
A major security operation has taken place for the game between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Police spotters were inside and outside the ground trying to identify potential hooligans. An alcohol cordon was also set up near the ground. The clash drew a maximum capacity crowd of 75,000. Officers were on duty in the city centre, around the ground and at bars and restaurants at Salford Quays. _________________

| River go top as hooliganism mars weekend - 22/10/2006
Source: Reuters
River Plate beat Rosario Central 2-0 to go top of the table on Sunday on another unhappy weekend in the Argentine championship where the match involving leaders Boca Juniors was postponed in a row over hooliganism.
Boca had been due to visit Racing Club but the match was called off on Friday when the Buenos Aires provincial government's security department said they would not provide policing for the game.
The decision came as a response to a court ruling earlier on Friday, allowing the leaders of a Boca supporters club known as La 12 to go to the game despite a Racing ban.
The fans involved have been convicted of crimes related to confrontations with supporters of other clubs in 1999 and 2003.
The championship has previously been plagued by hooliganism and safety concerns.
Two games were abandoned because of crowd trouble while the match between Gimnasia-La Plata and Boca Juniors was abandoned at halftime when referee Daniel Gimenez said he had been threatened by the Gimnasia president in his dressing-room.
River's win took them to 27 points from 12 games, two ahead of champions Boca who have played two games less because of the off-field problems.
River had a lucky let-off early in the game when former Argentina midfielder Kily Gonzalez missed a penalty for Rosario, his weak shot being easily saved by Juan Pablo Carrizo.
Daniel Passarella's team went ahead on the half hour when Marcelo Gallardo converted a penalty won by 20-year-old Colombian forward Radamel Falcao Garcia, who added the second in the 63rd minute.
Diego Simeone's Estudiantes went third, level on points with Boca, as they followed up last week's 7-0 thrashing of neighbours Gimnasia-La Plata by winning 3-1 at Godoy Cruz.
Estudiantes, inspired by midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron, went ahead in the first minute when Agustin Alayes's header hit the post and ricocheted into the net off the back of hapless goalkeeper Sebastian Torrico.
Jose Sosa finished off a slick move on the half hour and Mariano Pavone added the third four minutes later after the ball fortuitously rebounded to him off referee Sergio Pezzotta.
Gustavo Pinto pulled one back for Godoy Cruz in the 90th minute, too late to deny Estudiates their fifth win in a row.
Arsenal, who have one game in hand, went fourth with 21 points by beating lowly Colon 2-1 while Independiente and San Lorenzo's hopes effectively ended as they both lost.
Independiente, coached by 1986 World Cup winner Jorge Burruchaga, were beaten 2-1 at Velez Sarsfield and Oscar Ruggeri's San Lorenzo lost by the same score at Nueva Chicago.
Bottom club Quilmes won their first game, first-half goals by Sebastian Rusculleda and Diego Torres, from a penalty, giving them a 2-0 win over Gimnasia-Jujuy.
Gimnasia-La Plata, who shipped 11 goals in their previous two games, bounced back to win 1-0 at Lanus with a 90th-minute penalty converted by Uruguay forward Santiago Silva. _________________

| RACING - BOCA - 21/10/2006Source : BOCA website A cancelled matchThe match that Boca was to play against Racing has been suspended by AFA (the Argentine Football Association), because León Arslanián, the top government official in charge of the security in Buenos Aires province, is not able to guarantee the security in the stadium where the big game was to be played. The chronology of the way the suspension came about: The head of COPROSEDE (the provincial committee in charge of security at sports events) Mario Gallina had announced that Racing would impede Rafael Di Zeo and six other controversial Boca fans to enter Racing's stadium on Sunday, using his faculty to decide on the right of admission of any person to a sports event. The affected fans appealed to the provincial courts of justice asking them to reject the discrimination they were being subjected to by COPROSEDE and to rule on their right to enter the stadium. Judge Raúl Calvente, from a Lomas de Zamora court responsible in the jurisdiction of the stadium, accepted the fan's presentation and ruled that their entrance to the stadium could not be prevented. The top government official in charge of the security in Buenos Aires province León Arslanián let AFA president Julio Grondona know that the provincial police could not vouch for the security of the big match in Racing's stadium. The game was suspended. _________________ | |

| Hibernian - Heart of Midlothian - 15/10/2006Source : Edinburgh Evening News Police hunt city derby casualsDOZENS of Hibs and Hearts football casuals involved in violent clashes in the city centre are being hunted down by a special police task force. The new squad has been given orders to trace up to 60 hooligans who fought running battles after the recent Edinburgh derby. Violence flared between rival gangs of casuals following the 2-2 draw, with fighting erupting in Lothian Road and Fountain Park. The team of eight officers will study around 30 hours of CCTV footage capturing the disturbances in a bid to identify the thugs. And police said those responsible for the chaotic scenes in the city's streets face being hit with Edinburgh's first football banning orders as well as being put behind bars. They pledged to track down the culprits, who ranged in age from teenagers to men in their 40s. It is believed older hooligans who were part of the city's notorious casual scene 20 years ago are returning to be joined by younger men. Police made 14 arrests in the city centre in the hours following the match at Easter Road on October 15. In one incident outside the Uluru bar in Lothian Road, the pub's front window was smashed after a thug hurled a cone through the glass. A gang of Hearts casuals had descended on the bar after learning that rival Hibs hooligans were drinking inside. The gangs also clashed around the Fountain Bar in Fountainbridge and the Diggers pub in the Ardmillan area. Hooligans hurled rubbish bins and traffic signs during some of the battles as police officers tried to keep the factions apart. Officers on duty during the match had followed suspected casuals to the west of the city amid fears of violence. The new squad, which is based at Gayfield Square police station, will mount dawn raids against thugs once they are picked out from CCTV. Footage gathered from the city council's street cameras and film from security cameras inside pubs is now being studied. Chief Inspector Willie Wills, of Lothian and Borders Police, is leading the investigation. He said: "We are always aware that certain matches can draw those elements intent on causing trouble and the Edinburgh derby is one of those. I was around in the early 80s when the casuals were involved in large-scale disturbances. But last Sunday was as close to that level as I've seen during the intervening years. "With this team of officers we are demonstrating that these so-called fans, who have nothing to do with supporting football, will be identified and caught. They have been caught on camera and there will be no place to hide." Photographs of the thugs may be handed out to officers at future Hearts and Hibs matches to help identify the culprits. Both clubs have pledged support for the crackdown in an effort to stamp out violence. Chief Insp Wills added: "The older elements may have been part of the casual scene in previous years. It is difficult to say if they are directing the younger ones, but there is certainly an element of organisation to these factions. "These scenes of violence will not be tolerated and we would encourage real football fans to report them. "No-one who loves football wants these people associated with the game. Those who took part in the disorder would be better served handing themselves in now rather than waiting for the knock on the door." A Hearts spokesman said troublemakers who were found to be supporters of the club face being banned from Tynecastle. He added: "We will certainly give our assistance to police. That is likely to come when the people involved in causing any trouble have been traced and we've been told whether they were involved in football-related offences. "When taking action we will follow the police's lead." Frank Dougan, from the Hibs Supporters' Association, said incidents of football violence were still very rare in Edinburgh. He said: "A one-off incident isn't worth making a fuss over. Trouble at matches is very rare, but of course Hibs supporters will cooperate fully with the police as always." The factsCasual crews such as the CCS ( Capital City Service), who were linked to Hibs, and the CSF ( Casual Soccer Firm), linked to Hearts, caused violence in the 1980s and 1990s. The problem seemed to disappear, but police said there has been a resurgence in the casual scene, as older hooligans team up with younger thugs. Hearts and Hibs football casuals clashed when they arranged a fight in the Polwarth Tavern on Temple Park Crescent following the two clubs' Scottish Cup ties in the city on January 7. In March 2002, police used dogs and CS spray to subdue rioting hooligans after organised violence broke out in the wake of an Edinburgh derby at Easter Road. In November 2002, a coachload of Hearts fans was attacked by 50 Hibs casuals before a derby encounter. CCTV captured this attack by Hearts casuals on Uluru, a Lothian Road bar where rival Hibs thugs were drinking. _________________ | |

| Argentine hooligans out of control, says Perfumo - 24/10/2006
Source : REÜTERS
Former Argentina international Roberto Perfumo said on Tuesday that his country's hooligan problem was out of control and blamed club directors for encouraging hardcore supporters. Perfumo said the clubs had encouraged the so-called "barrabravas" - organised supporters clubs often accused of violence -- by giving them free tickets and transport to games. "The Frankenstein which they've created today knows no limits," he said in an interview with the sports daily Ole. "They've bred a monster and it's about to devour its creators. The only solution is to have some shame, because otherwise worse times will come." Perfumo, who played for Argentina at the 1966 and 1974 World Cups, also referred to the practice in which the self-styled "barra" leaders were allowed to meet with the players and discuss their performances. "We were never hassled by the fans. They were people who got together to support us," he said. "Sometimes, they asked for money to travel or buy something, such as flags, but if we didn't give them anything, nothing happened." Argentina has been plagued by football violence this year. Two first division matches have been abandoned by riots, one called off at halftime over threats to the referee by a club president and another postponed because of security problems since the season began in August. _________________

| Another Argentine club want to ban hooligans - 24/10/2006
Source : REÜTERS
Independiente are planning to ban hooligan fans of rivals River Plate from Sunday's derby in the latest attempt to quell soccer violence in Argentina. Julio Comparada, the president of Independiente, said it was up to the police to identify the thugs. "They know perfectly well who the violent ones are," Comparada told the Torneos y Competencias television channel. The announcement from the Buenos Aires team came three days after neighbours Racing Club's attempt to refuse entry to leaders of a hardcore Boca Juniors supporters club was overturned by a court ruling. Racing's move led to the postponement of last Sunday's game against Boca after the Buenos Aires provincial government refused to provide policing. The decision came as a response to a court ruling allowing the leaders of a Boca supporters club known as La 12 to go to the game despite a Racing ban. The supporters involved have been convicted of crimes related to confrontations with fans of other clubs in 1999 and 2003. The Apertura championship has been plagued by hooliganism and safety concerns. Two games were abandoned because of crowd trouble while the match between Gimnasia-La Plata and Boca was abandoned at halftime when referee Daniel Gimenez said he had been threatened by the Gimnasia president in his dressing room. _________________
