Zambia - South Africa - 08/10/2006

Source : Xinhua

Zambian soccer fans arrested

Zambian police arrested Sunday several soccer fans who allegedly blocked the road near the stadium in Lusaka as confusion ensured after the country's national team was defeated by South Africa in an Africa Cup qualifier.

Zambia Daily Mail Monday quoted police deputy spokesperson Crispin Kapela as saying here on the day that the angry fans were arrested for blocking the road leading to Chaisa township in their bid to vent their anger on the national team of Zambia.

Kapela could not confirm the exact number of the fans arrested.

Police fired teargas canisters to disperse the irate fans as they engaged police in skirmishes. The fans waylaid the national team at Mandevu junction on its way to the hotel from Independence stadium.

But quick action by police prevented the situation from deteriorating, according to the newspaper.

Earlier the residents of the township managed to chase the few police officers that went into the township to calm the situation.

The residents were later seen burning tyres on the road that leads to another township.

South Africa beat Zambia by a lone goal.

Carlisle United – Millwall fc – 07/10/2006

Source : News & Star

Rampage soccer fans shame city

A GROUP of at least 100 youths, some as young as nine, rampaged through Carlisle city centre after this weekend’s Carlisle United match against Millwall.

The youngsters baited the 500 Millwall fans who attended Saturday’s game as they made their way to the railway station following Carlisle United’s 2-1 defeat.

To stop them clashing with rival fans, the youngsters were herded around the city streets by police with their batons raised. At the height of the trouble, some witnesses saw as many as 200 excited, shouting youths aged from around nine to 15, gathered beside the Citadel.

When police, some with dogs, tried to move and disperse the group, many ran into the busy shopping precinct. The doors to some shops were closed, while in others, staff guarded the entrances as the group gathered in English Street outside the Lanes shopping centre.

A police spokesman said: “No one from the Millwall area was arrested, they were very good natured. Our locals were trying to bait them but they did not rise to it.

“The youngsters were shepherded around the town. They were trying to emulate the reputation of people involved in football disorder in the late 80s and 90s in Carlisle.

“They thought it was something big and clever.”

Police took precautionary measures because of historic problems between fans when the two teams have met in the past.

There were seven arrests for football-related disorder during the day.

Since Carlisle’s promotion to League One, the police presence on match days has been increased.

After the home game against Blackpool last month, a pub landlord had to lock 30 Carlisle fans in after he heard them planning to confront opposing fans in the street outside.

Following a pre-season friendly against Sunderland in July, there was large-scale football disorder in Carlisle which resulted in five men being charged.

Chief Inspector Gary Slater, who was in charge of Saturday’s operation, said: “There was a forward line of police officers moving fans out of the road so we could bring the Millwall fans through.

“It worked really well.”

Alistair Harris, who was on the door of Panchos restaurant in Court Square, said: “There were about 200 young ones shouting.

“It was like the old days with Millwall.”

Fiona MacLeod, 30, had just parked her car near the Lonsdale Cinema at around 4.30pm when she saw the large group of youngsters being herded down the street by police with their batons out.

She said: “I was amazed by how young some of the group was.

“It was a bit unnerving seeing so many together.”

Tight security for England-Croatia match in Zagreb - 11/10/2006

Source : Reüters

Croatia and England will play their Euro 2008 Group E qualifier today amid tight security measures designed to prevent any crowd trouble, Zagreb media reported yesterday.

Police have been under orders since yesterday morning to detain any troublemakers, while traffic in the city centre will grind to a halt several hours before kick-off at 7pm (1700GMT).

England fans will be separated from home supporters well before they reach the stadium, while an extra 100 security stewards and 625 guards have been assigned to the game.

It will not be a full house at the 40,000-seater Maksimir Stadium, as 10% of the tickets have been held back to create a buffer zone between the rival fans.

Fans will be thoroughly searched before entering, to prevent Croatia supporters bringing in the kind of flares and fireworks that were set off during Saturday's 7-0 win over Andorra.

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic said he expected no crowd trouble.

“English fans used to be the most notorious hooligans but times have changed and most of their supporters are now decent family folk who come to enjoy the football,” he said. “I am also sure that our fans will do nothing to the detriment of our team and the chances to win this match. I believe it will be a spectacular event.”

UEFA spokesman William Gaillard has warned that Europe's ruling body could kick Croatia out of the competition if the home fans engaged in any more racist behaviour. In August, they stood in a swastika formation during a friendly with Italy.

“We can impose heavier sanctions if it happens again and that could ultimately be exclusion from the competition,” he said. “There are new rules which can lead to exclusion from a competition and docking points in extreme cases. We will monitor the events closely. “Ourselves and FIFA have imposed sanctions and the sanctions will be heavier in the future.”

Chiefs fined for hooligan fans - 11/10/2006

Source: Sunday Times

Kaizer Chiefs were handed a somewhat lenient R250,000 fine (suspended for a year) and a one match lock out for their next home PSL match at a Premier Soccer League Disciplinary hearing in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The fine and ban were handed to Chiefs after their supporters went on the rampage after their PSL 1-2 loss against Wits University on September 20 followed by more acts of hooliganism in their Supa semifinal encounter against Moroka Swallows on September 24 which Chiefs won in Durban.

However, Chiefs have been saved from digging into their rather hefty piggy bank as the fine has been suspended for a year, on condition that they are not convicted of the same offence during the period of their suspension.

The one match home match lock out is likely not to be imposed for Chiefs lucrative PSL home match encounter against reigning PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns this coming Saturday as the Disciplinary Committee gave allowance for Chiefs to explore all appeal avenues before the ban could come into effect. The Disciplinary Committee also recommended that PSL should conduct an inquiry as soon as it is practical to investigate issues of security at stadiums which league and matches sanctioned by the PSL are played.

The costs of the Chiefs hearing was to be paid by the guilty party.

Last year, Chiefs were fined and received a two match lock out ban of which they only served one match against Black Leopards but successfully won a High Court appeal for their home match against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Greece: Football fan wins battle -06/10/2006

Source: News24

Greek police have been ordered to pay damages to a football fan who lost the sight in one eye after he was injured by a flare during a top flight football match.

Achilleas Dragoumis, 40, was awarded nearly $114 000 (about R900 000) in compensation for the incident that happened during a match between bitter rivals Olympiakos and Panathinaikos in 2003.

An Athens court found the injury was caused due to insufficient police security at the match.

Greek football has been plagued with hooliganism at football matches in recent years, leading to a crackdown by authorities.

Fired German soccer coach hires security detail - 08/10/2206

Source: People's Daily

German soccer coach Burkhard Ziese fired by Malawi last week said he suspects some people want to physically assault him and damage his property, and therefore he has hired security detail, Nation Online of Malawi reported Saturday.

In a letter wrote to him on September 29 the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) warned him to keep away from the stadium and national team when it is training or playing a match.

The letter further warned him that he would be responsible for anything happening to him or any damage to his property.

"Why would anyone want to ban me from watching a match? Do they want to send the same thugs that assaulted me at the Kamuzu Stadium?" queried Ziese.

The German coach said he has hired a security detail of four officers who are guarding him and his property.

The upfront coach, however, said he would defy the FAM warning and attend Saturday's Africa Nations Cup qualifier clash between Malawi and Zimbabwe, saying he wants to watch his boys beat Zimbabwe.

The German, who is never short of controversy, was given the boots by FAM on September 27 following a recommendation one day before by the FAM Disciplinary Committee which found him guilty of serious breach of the agreement he signed with the association.

Ziese is accused of insubordination and open defiance; lack of respect for authority; absconding duties without satisfactory reasons; fraud and corruption; lack of submission of match reports and use of abusive language to officials and players.

Bolton man's three year Euro football ban - 09/10/2006

Source: This is Lancashire

A MAN from Bolton was today banned from flying to Europe ahead of England's Euro Championship match with Croatia in Zagreb on Wednesday.

Carl Lomax, aged 30, of Ennerdale Gardens, Breightmet, was given a three-year banning order at Manchester City Magistrates Court this morning.

He was stopped from flying to Europe following Greater Manchester Police's latest operation to target known or potential troublemakers and prevent them from travelling abroad to engage in football-related violence.

Croatia-England: Man given football banning order - 09/10/2006

Source: BBC News

A man has been banned from travelling to Zagreb for Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier between England and Croatia.

Carl Lomax, 30, of Ennerdale Gardens in Bolton, Greater Manchester, was given a Football Banning Order by magistrates in Manchester on Monday.

It comes on the day police warned known hooligans not to travel to the Zagreb match on Wednesday.

Police are on guard at Manchester Airport in a bid to target those intending to commit football violence.

Officers said they would be enforcing Football Banning Orders, which can require troublemakers to show their passports to police on the day of the match.

'Clear message'

People without tickets are being encouraged not to travel.

More than 3,000 tickets have been made available to England fans and all have been sold.

The Football Banning Order Authority (FBOA) has already sent out letters to known hooligans, advising them that breaches of the conditions will be treated seriously.

Ch Insp Chris Ullah, of the Airport Police, said: "As with previous operations of this kind, we are sending out a clear message to people intending to travel to commit violence: don't waste your time.

"Plain clothes officers will be working to spot known troublemakers and uniformed officers will be providing a high-visibility presence at the airport, talking to fans and monitoring the situation."

Slaven: Croatian fans fit the Bil - 10/10/2006

Source: The Sun

SLAVEN BILIC has backed Croatia’s under-fire fans ahead of tomorrow's crunch tie with England.

The Croatia boss insists that the vast majority of his side’s fans are well behaved - and he blamed any trouble on an unwelcome minority.

He said: "Our fans are very important to us.

"I have seen rumours and articles saying they are racist and so on but they are not all like that.

"Most of them are normal fans who just get behind the team."

Bilic believes Croatia’s fans are just like any other set of supporters.

"You can find people who cause problems everywhere you go and Croatia is the same.

"It is just like in Spain, Italy, England or any other country but the majority are good fans."

Bilic also backed travelling England fans to behave in Zagreb as they did in this summer’s World Cup.

He said: "I think England have great fans.

"They did have a reputation for being hooligans but if you just let them have a beer they are quiet.

"All they want to do is sit around with their friends and enjoy themselves.

"They are definitely welcome in our country."

Germany hopes soccer will eclipse trouble in Slovakia - 10/10/2006

Source: Reuter

Germany coach Joachim Loew and captain Michael Ballack said on Tuesday they hoped soccer would be the focus of Wednesday's Euro 2008 Group D match against Slovakia after warnings about possible crowd trouble.

"Football should take centre stage tomorrow," Loew said at a news conference in Bratislava. "That's what we are hoping for and we are trying with the players to achieve that," said Loew.

When Germany last played Slovakia away, in September 2005, around 500 German hooligans fought with local police after their team lost 2-0. Six people were injured, one seriously.

Team manager Oliver Bierhoff warned on Monday that around 500 potential troublemakers were attempting to travel from Germany to the match in Bratislava.

A number of officials from the German soccer association (DFB) and eight police officers from a specialist sports action squad were travelling to the Slovakian capital to help with the security operation, the DFB said in a statement.

In addition, German fans were only able to buy tickets made available by the DFB for the match from the national team's fan club, it added.

However, it said that the Slovakian soccer association had ignored a request not to sell tickets to German fans. Ballack told reporters on Tuesday he was confident the DFB was doing everything to ensure things went smoothly on Wednesday. He too said he hoped football would be the focus and that no hooligans would gain access to the stadium.

"We know what happened last year and are of course hoping that nothing will happen again," Ballack said.

Croatian media reported on Tuesday that their national team's match with England on Wednesday would be played amid tight security to prevent violence.

UEFA have also issued a reminder that any racism at grounds could result in expulsions from the competition.

CROATIA - ENGLAND - 11/10/2006

Source : Fox Sport + ITN news + ThisIsLondon + Guardian

Police detain 21 fans ahead of match

Police detained 16 Croatia fans and five England supporters Tuesday night because of clashes between rival groups in Zagreb.

With a large number of fans in the Croatian capital for Wednesday's European Championship qualifier between the teams, a police cordon prevented two larger groups from meeting at the city's main square.

Most of the fans detained clashed in and in front of bars in downtown Zagreb and most of them were intoxicated, police said Wednesday.

"They certainly won't be watching the game tonight," head of Zagreb police Marijan Tomurad said.

Police estimated that more than 2,000 England fans will arrive for the match.

The match had already been declared high risk, with a record number of local police and security agents posted to prevent possible violence.

UEFA has warned Croatia that it may be banned from Euro 2008 if fans continue with racist chanting and other misdemeanors.

Five England fans detained in Croatia

Police in Croatia have detained five England fans ahead of Steve McClaren's men's Euro 2008 Group E qualifier after overnight skirmishes in Zagreb.

Riot police have been deployed in a bid to stave off the threat of more trouble ahead of kick-off at the Maksimir Stadium.

Police, who will keep the rival fans apart, said: "A total of 21 fans, 16 Croatian and five English, were detained after the clashes. Police prevented serious fighting after moving in swiftly to separate the rival fans and closed down the area."

England fans clash with police

Several England fans suffered head injuries after police lashed out with batons just minutes before England kicked off against Croatia, a supporter said tonight. Violence erupted as hundreds of football fans pushed forward to get into the Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb, it was claimed.

Kevin Miles, international co-ordinator of the Football Supporters' Federation, said officers dressed in riot gear "lashed out at people left, right and centre".

Television pictures showed police officers using sections of metal fencing to hold back dozens of agitated supporters. Speaking from the stadium, Mr Miles said "a few dozen" people were injured as England fans were confronted by more than 100 officers in full riot gear.

He said: "They had completely lost control of access at the England end. There was a crush at the front and the police responded by hitting people with batons.

"There was a lot of people with head injuries. There has been blood spilled. I have seen them hitting people who are on the ground with batons.

"We are not talking about policing measures. We are talking about police brutality. There was no provocation at all. There has been no atmosphere of violence or anything like that. It is because they were unable to manage a crowd."

Mr Miles, who tended to one injured fan himself, said at least 3,700 tickets had been sold to England fans prior to the match.

A Foreign Office spokesman said that although there was a rush about 15 minutes before kick off, there were no reports of injuries from the ground.

He said: "A number of fans turned up around 15 minutes before kick off. There was a rush to get in. Croatian police held them back and since then all England fans have got in.

"We have not been notified of any England fans being taken out having required medical assistance."

Scottish Fans 'attacked By Hooligans' in Kiev

Several Scotland supporters have been injured after being set upon by a gang of local hooligans in Ukraine. Several Scotland supporters have been injured after being set upon by a gang of local hooligans in Ukraine.

Fans said up to 300 local youths launched an "unprovoked" attack on members of the travelling Tartan Army in Kiev ahead of tonight's Euro 2008 qualifying match.

The Scottish Football Association said several Scots suffered broken bones and cuts following the disturbance in the city's Independence Square. The exact number of supporters involved is unknown. Approximately 3,000 Scottish fans are in Kiev for tonight's match.

"The Scotland fans were absolutely magnificent, in that they did not react to the violence or provocation," said Derek Kirkwood, security adviser to the SFA. "They chose to walk away from the scene rather than get involved, and their behaviour was exemplary."

But the footballing authority has warned Scottish fans in the country to remain on their guard. "Following the incident, which was entirely unexpected, the SFA have advised fans to be careful in the city and to avoid any possible further provocation," read a statement.

A spokesman for the British Embassy in Kiev said he had heard about trouble in Independence Square, but did not know how many people were involved. He was he was not aware of anyone who needed hospital treatment.

Travelling fan Simon Johnston, a committee member of the Association of Tartan Army Clubs, was in Independence Square at the time of last night's trouble. He said around 300 Scots were enjoying themselves in the square at about 9.30pm local time when they were suddenly targeted by a similar number of chanting locals.

"It was a big group of Ukrainians, about 300 of them," said Johnston. "They came out of nowhere from down a side street and all piled in. All the Scots scarpered, but a few guys, I think, got caught up. We heard there were ambulances there."

Strathclyde police have a senior officer in Ukraine, but he is not thought to have been in the area of last night's trouble.

SLOVAQUIA - GERMANY - 11/10/2006

Source : AFP + ZDF + Spiegel

German football chief apologises for rioting 'fans'

The German Football Federation (DFB) has apologised for the conduct of their fans during the 4-1 Euro 2008 qualifying win over Slovakia in Bratislava after close to 200 German hooligans tussled with stadium police.

"Unfortunately we have to accept that you cannot prevent things such as this no matter how hard you try," said DFB president Theo Zwanziger.

"We have to apologise but must also point out that these people are not fans and just use football as a platform for their purposes. They are giving their homeland a bad name."

Five German hooligans were arrested for the fracas in the stadium and a Slovakian policeman was injured prior to the match as things got out of hand.

"We just have to distance ourselves from them," said Germany captain Michael Ballack. "The good impression we left on the pitch was spoilt by some hooligans. It is a shame."

When Germany last played Slovakia away, in September 2005, close to 500 German hooligans fought with local police after their team lost the friendly match 2-0. Six people were injured, one seriously.

60 Germans banned from Slovakia

Police banned 60 Germany fans from entering Slovakia ahead of Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier.
"Border cooperation with our German colleagues has been very good," local police said in a statement. "With their assistance, 60 persons were banned from entering Slovakia."
The two teams last met 13 months ago when hosts Slovakia won 2-0 in a match marred by pitched battles between German fans and police.
Slovak officials, looking to ward off any trouble at Wednesday's match, have bolstered stadium security in Bratislava with 600 policemen, special riot units and SWAT teams.

5 Germans arrested after clashing with police at Slovakia game

Five German soccer fans were arrested Wednesday for clashing with police during Germany's match against Slovakia.

Slovakian police spokesman Viktor Plezel said the Germans fans attacked security officers shortly after halftime. Dozens of baton-wielding police officers were sent into the stands to control the situation.

UEFA await report over Zagreb trouble - 12/10/2006

Source : Teamtalk

UEFA will wait for their delegate's report before deciding what action to take over a security incident before England's game against Croatia. The Football Association were unhappy with the treatment received by supporters at Zagreb's Maksimir Stadium on Wednesday night, which left some fans injured.

Police used batons against travelling supporters as confusion broke out at turnstiles outside the ground before England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia.
A UEFA spokesman said: "We haven't received the UEFA delegate's report for the time being. It has to come in within 48 hours of the match.

"We always wait for the official report before considering any action to be taken."

There remains a doubt about whether the problem comes under UEFA's jurisdiction because it was not actually inside the stadium, though the fact it was in direct relation to the match and in close proximity to the ground is likely to make it their responsibility.

"You have to take into account where it has happened, whether it was inside the stadium or in the city because obviously it is only the events that are inside the stadium or in the very close vicinity that come under our jurisdiction," said the spokesman.

England fans without tickets were able to break through the security cordon around the ground, sparking concern among security guards.

Stadium officials then decided to shut the turnstiles for two five-minute periods, causing panic to spread among those fans who had travelled with tickets.

Supporters squeezed towards the gates, and police reacted by brandishing their batons.

Some England supporters suffered head injuries.

The UEFA delegate at the game was made aware of the problem and is expected to investigate it.

The FA were disappointed with the security cordon which allowed fans without tickets to get to the turnstiles, neutralising their efforts to police supporters who follow the team.

Zambia risks sanctions for fans rioting - 12/10/2006

Source : Xinhua

Zambia risks being fined heavily or being ordered to play home matches abroad if fans continue rioting after the host team loses in football matches, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has said.
Julio Chiluba with the FAZ was cited by Thursday's newspaper The Post as saying continued riots by hooligans every time the senior national team lost could force the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to charge the association.
Chiluba has since called on soccer fans to accept defeat and not to resort to riots whenever the national team lost.
Some local fans resorted to throwing stones at motorists after Zambia lost 0-1 to South Africa in the second qualifying match of Africa Cup of Nations Ghana 2008 last Sunday in Lusaka's Independence Stadium.
"While we appreciate the frustrations of losing a home match, the association strongly condemns such and any other acts of hooliganism," Chiluba said.
He said if CAF acts, the cost for FAZ and the soccer fans would be high because the association would be deprived revenue from home matches and also have to bear the cost of organizing matches abroad.
In 2005, soccer fans and hooligans rioted in Kitwe, 400km north of Lusaka, after Zambia went down 0-1 to Senegal in a World Cup qualifying match.
In 2004, fans ran amok after the national team lost to Angola in the final of the COSAFA Castle Cup played in Lusaka.

Serbia : Racist incident in Čačak - 15/10/2006

Source : Beta

The police in Čačak detained 37 fans after a racist incident during Serbia’s premier league football match Sunday.

The police say the game was interrupted for about 10 minutes during the first half after a group of home side Borac supporters appeared wearing white hoods and outfits reading “Ku Klux Klan”, in order to insult their side’s player Mike Tamvanyera.

The group of hooligans also wore a banner reading, “Go away, no one likes you here”.

The game between Borac and Voždovac was continued after the police took the racist fans out of the stadium. The police will issue an official statement later in the day.

Asian cup: Four people injured during troubles with fans - 12/10/2006

Source : AFP

Four fans were injured and several others were arrested when Pakistani and Jordanian fans clashed at an Asian Cup football qualifier, officials said.

Play was halted for 15 minutes and police baton-charged supporters after trouble broke out at the Group C match in Lahore on Wednesday night, when Jordan beat Pakistan 3-0.

"Some Jordanians studying at Lahore University fought with local fans and then fought amongst themselves, which was unsavoury," said Colonel Ahmed Yar Khan, administration director for the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF).

Eyewitnesses said fans kicked and punched each other after some Jordanian supporters chanted slogans about the weak Pakistan display, incensing the locals.

The match eventually resumed after police dragged the troublemakers from the stadium.

"It wasn't a big issue but it should not have happened in an otherwise peaceful match," said Khan.

The four Jordanian students who were arrested later sent a written apology to Pakistani football officials, the PFF said.

"We apologize for our behaviour which caused trouble in the match. As students of a brother Muslim country we feel our act was condemnable," said the apology, according to the federation.

The four Jordanians and six Pakistani fans were released Thursday evening, officials said.

Pakistan have lost all five of their matches in Group C, which is led by Oman with 12 points followed by the United Arab Emirates with Jordan lying third.

Two teams will qualify from each group for the finals of the tournament to be jointly held in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam next year.
